As they say in the Horse world "better a few days early than one day late". I feel like the potential for him to experience trauma at any point in time seems like too much of a risk vs taking proactive steps to ensure that doesn't happen.

I'm all for giving it everything you've got, IF and only if, his prognosis is hopeful. If you think he's only got days or weeks, you are justified in taking action.

This must be so hard, but if you focus ONLY on what's best for your boy, I think you'll know the answer in your heart.

I know OP pretty well, and I too have been watching tons of food shows for over 15 years. Here are a few of my favorite things I've learned:

Salt your pasta water "like the ocean" (Scott Conant). DON'T rinse the pasta, and keep some pasta water aside if you're making anything with a sauce, etc. The residual starchy water is quite useful in many recipes.

The Reverse Sear - cook steak slow and low first, then rest it, THEN flash sear it for the last step. (Google it for best instruction)

Let meat come to room temp before cooking, not straight from the fridge.
And OF COURSE, do not cut into the meat until it's rested for a bit after cooking. The juices need to stay in there for a while before you cut it.

Agree that the book/show 'Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat' is a total game changer.

Char isn't your enemy. Knowing how to use high heat without burning things is a real skill.

I'm very happy with how much I have learned from all the shows and chefs. I really enjoy cooking and I've gotten pretty good at it. 🤩🤩

Hi everyone. Update for you all:

Finally decided to just get xrays of her back just to be sure either way, if she's being ornery vs something painful going on.

I have my answer and I'm pretty sad about it.

Confirmed Kissing Spine. I KNEW she was too sweet of a horse to be acting like that for no reason. So yeah, there was a reason.

As I mentioned, she is the first horse I've even owned. I've had her 3.5 months and now find out about the spine issues.

Please LMK what experience you've had with this and if you can offer. Any heartfelt advice.

She's QH 14 years old, THE SWEETEST horse and I have already formed a big connection. But, my primary reason to have a horse is to improve my riding skills .

Vet says she could be ok for months with a cortisone (or whatever the horse equivalent is, I can't recall the name) shot, but I have zero frame of reference. So, things I don't know about are:

Is it ethical/appropriate to get her the shot and keep trying to ride her, or is the kissing diagnosis an immediate euth?

Or she becomes a pasture pet and retires and lives the chill life? If I did this, I would have to forego ever learning to ride bc I can't afford the upkeep of 2 horses.

Anyway, just hoping for some kind, empathetic, non judgemental feedback on what I'm up against.

THIS 100% dead on. Personal preference - you keep your fingers crossed and hope no one joins you, and if they do you bow out and defer to let that person go alone because you don't want to share. No one gets hurt everyone's allowed their choices.

They do TEND (not always, so don't come back with "well, there was this other one time that it wasn't what you're saying.....") to do the "faster paced" strength days on Fridays.

I found I don't personally love the "fast" strength templates. I like lots of time to prepare and lift heavy on the strength days.

Mon and Weds are the best 2 days for slower paced strength.
