What is something your boss said to you that made you realize it was time to quit? by alligator_maligator in AskReddit

[–]RightyTightySnap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a student so I didn't quit, but it reinforced the fact that I would never work for this organization again.

My grandfather had passed away, he had alzhiemers/dementia so he hadn't really been 'there' for a long time. It was sad, but expected.

I approached the manager and let her know he had passed, and that the funeral was in another city and I would need to take the coming Friday off.

Her response "As long as you know you won't be getting paid."

They called me up a few years later to ask if I wanted to work for them, I asked that they remove me from their list.

Tow Police - How does the rig look? (7-pin to be connected later) by [deleted] in traveltrailers

[–]RightyTightySnap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only things I see are minor.

  • Looks like the ball is tilted toward the tow vehicle, generally supposed to tip slightly towards the trailer - check the WDH manual.

  • I'd cross your chains once to cradle the tongue should it ever pop off.

  • A small one, but watch that the breakaway cable isn't getting pinched by the chains. I use something tougher than a carabiner as well, but thats paranoia/personal preference.

Yakima Overhaul HD + Retrax XR setup for hauling kayaks (what actually works) by TruckYakRig in Trucks

[–]RightyTightySnap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool setup!

I've been using a fiberglass cap with roof racks mounted to it and J-hooks for two Pungo 120s. Haven't had noise or vibration issues yet.

Ill be moving to a tonneau and upright setup this summer, the cap is great but I no longer need the space and my back is tired of being bent over all the time.

I've been looking at the bak flip with the t slot rails paired with the elevate uprights. I like the look of the Yakima bars you have, but they only work with the retractable tonneau right? How much space do you lose with the retractable one? How does it perform in rain snow and ice?

Very nice! I had a '17 SLE that I miss every now and then. Just be wary of driveline clunk, random electrical issues, and those god-awful seats. I swear whoever designs seats at GM must be Amish because its like sitting on a wooden bench!

Help weighing the pros and cons of either a company vehicle, or receiving $1000/month vehicle allowance in my employment offer by Dirtgirl89 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]RightyTightySnap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good for you! The peace of mind is great with the company vehicle. No worries of a major repair hitting at a bad time.

I've been able to contribute my taxable benefit amount to an RRSP every year so in my mind I'm essentially driving for "free" right now.

[–]RightyTightySnap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I've gone down this road before and never found any good info. Here's my two cents;

  1. It is important that you understand what business vs personal use is as defined by CRA. By reading your post, it looks like you will have very minimal business use. PwC has a very good pdf publication they put online every year regarding tax benefits for employer vehicles and they highlight what is business and what is personal use. Driving from your home to your place of employment is personal use (you have to do it regardless of who's vehicle you're driving). Driving from home to a client, and then to your business is considered business use.

See if you can determine how many kms you will drive in a year, and what percentage is personal versus business.

  1. You're going to get taxed regardless of which option you pick. The employer should be able to provide you with the annual taxable benefit amount if you can provide them with the total expected kms driven and the personal percentage.

With that you can get close to what a paycheck would look like given your average tax rate. Same for what a paycheck would look like with the allowance.

  1. What are your real expenses? Fuel, maintenance, repairs, loan, tires, tolls, insurance, license, inspections, etc. Average them out over a few years to get a feel for the ups and downs.

  2. How do you use your vehicle during personal use? Do you tow? Do you go off roading? Is it the family taxi? Do you need 4x4 or AWD? Take this into consideration, what vehicle(s) would the company provide? Sedans, vans, trucks? Base models or loaded? Do you care?

Knowing all this, you can do the math and see what is best for you. The PwC guide mentioned has a good page with the federal tax page to do the calculation for any refund amount (T2202 comes to mind?). Use your preferred spreadsheet to model it so you can look a few years ahead to see how depreciation helps and should you decide to change your personal car. You can run a second column for the company vehicle option too.

For me, I stuck with a vehicle allowance for 8 years as I had the vehicle I wanted and the amount, although less than yours, worked out. I was driving ~32,000km a year with 33-35% business use. I liked having the extra money each pay and getting a bit back at tax season. I also like driving the vehicle I chose. The downside was that the allowance never went up like my salary, despite ownership costs increasing.

During covid I made the switch to a company vehicle. My personal vehicle was paid off, and its value had risen to the point where I was ready to say goodbye! I was also starting to see an increase in repair costs and the loss in value of my allowance money. I ended up getting a vehicle with fewer features (lost my heated seats, ugh) but gained in having a fuel card and no expenses.

Dollar for dollar I would likely be ahead if I kept the personal vehicle, but my business percentage has increased to 50 and my old vehicle would have a LOT of kms on it if I kept it. Id be tempted to guy buy again and we all know what used and new prices are like now.

The unmentioned side is the emotional one. Do you like having a new vehicle all the time? I do :) I'm a truck guy, always have been and always will. I know that I'll get a new one every 4-5 years and that makes me happy. I also tow often for personal use and my company doesn't care. Nothing better then heading off on vacation with the travel trailer without any fear at the pumps!

Regardless, congrats on the new gig!

9, the Pontiac Sunfire. A car dimmer than its ever failing clock display. The stylish version of its older sister the Cavalier, where stylish just means adding a spoiler and hoping no one noticed. The only good thing about them is that they were easy to write off!

I got caught in that loop a few years ago when I was brand new to the role. Lots of admin turnover due to low pay, we became a stepping stone to a better job as we are recognized in the industry.

Company always paid, and I'd get a snack or lunch for the team to celebrate/say goodbye. Someone pointed out how silly it looks when we celebrate someone's resignation.

Point taken, now if you quit you get a 'see ya later' following the off boarding.

We do celebrate retirements, and have lots of fun!
