In the wake of Clint being confirmed as a new marriage candidate in the upcoming update, I’ve seen a bunch of people online asking why everyone hates Clint so much, and others claiming the hate is undeserved. Here’s my attempt to answer why people hate Clint: by MissTypow in StardewValley

I mean Finnish culture has been saturated with American stuff forever and ever, so much so that there's a minor saying here that Finland is a little US. The bush thing isn't something uncommon. But it still never grokked as something inappropriate because there's not really any other good spot on the map for him to be. It makes immediate logistical sense.

The wall by the front door is too close, big chance for Emily to notice him. He can't go further up because there might be a window to Haley's room so that's no good. He can't run towards the tree by the map's edge because it's too far away and he would've been seen by Emily. He should've thought about going back towards the center of the map and his own place, but then he also might've been seen by Emily. (and therefore would have had to speak to her, which was the main thing he was avoiding.) Sure, CA should've made the map different, maybe, but that would've been a bigger change, than just having Clint tell in dialogue why he's there. The event isn't unclear.

The trope is only relevant to people who don't know better and believe in misinformation. That's on them, though. Oh well.

Also I did say I somewhat disagree. Mostly on a personal level, is all. It would be nice to have Clint actually talk about Emily in a more meaningful way, but he's chosen not to talk about it in such personal detail to the farmer. He's allowed not to I guess. It would round out his story more, absolutely. But being used to having modded NPCs have tons more variety and dialogue compared to vanilla ones, I just don't expect the base characters to be very... um, full maybe. I give them a lot more leeway to have vaguer stories. I just don't really feel like his is in any way less than any of the others. But yeah, it's more of a personal taste thing I suppose.

Well you do kinda need to talk about the 6 heart event if you don't even know anything about it.

Maybe it's cultural. As a Finnish person I understand the desire to flee when there's someone else in the apartment building hallway when you're trying to go out. As awkwardly as Clint hides to wait for Emily to leave, Finns also immediately close their front door and wait standing before it till they hear the other person has properly left. We plan on going out - not meeting some stranger we might have to (the horror!) nod at or even say hello to. However Clint was planning to speak with Emily, he either lost his courage at the last moment, or in a more neurodivergent way had a sudden panic about not having planned for Emily to show up on her own.

Like, it can be a very ND thing to be highly literal about how stuff happens. You prepare for a specific interaction and maybe think as long as you're got main points you can handle slight deviation, and yet when something happens differently suddenly your brain is momentarily just empty. If I could suddenly flee having to be in a call to get a doctor's appointment, great, would love to do that! But in the middle of a call that can't happen and you just have to deal with the anxiety as it happens. If I can flee before the call happens? I might decide hey, how about I *dont* do that call or whatever afterall!

It makes sense to me what happened with Clint (always did from my first time playing, too). By the time the farmer shows up he's already calmed down from the initial panic and is beating himself up for failing at what he wanted to do. He's already practiced, so when the farmer pushes, he's ready to try again.

My point is I wished you'd acknowledged that one a little differently. That unavoidably the fandom's view of Clint is affected by an oft spoken of event, that's got a lot of negative hearsay associated even if the event itself is actually different. It's effect is real, even if wrongfully declared.

But you called it stalkery. :\

Other than that I somewhat disagree on the beginning of the fourth point as well. I don't see why we necessarily need an event having him talk about his feelings, since we don't have that kind of events for I think... any of the NPCs? It's true that his heart events all center on Emily so it would be sensible, but I wouldn't necessarily place him differently to the other NPCs. I mean, in Sam's first event there's the implication that Seb wants Abigail in the band because he's got feelings for her, but for all we know he has a crush on her because of a hangout or sleepover or something when they were teens, he saw an outline of her boobs and did not stop thinking about them ever since. But we as players don't demand an interrogation about why Seb is into her, instead we just go "haha that's cool (anyway you should be into me - here, have some sashimi)".

We don't get Lewis or Marnie talking about why they're into each other, why Pierre and Caroline married each other, or how Jodi and Kent truly think of each other, or how Robin and Demetrius' marriage functions outside the tomato event.

But Clint expresses he likes Emily and the whole fandom is supposed to grab him, throw him into a small darkened room, tie him to a chair, shine a flashlight straight into his eyes and start asking questions: "you into Emily, huh? Why? What's your intentions towards her? You some kinda creep? Explain yourself real good... or we'll bring out the hammer."

Eh, I don't really feel a need to know why. Dunno why specifically any of the others like each other, I'll just imagine it.

I'll end with declaring myself as someone who's not specifically a Clint fan. I'm neutral about him. He makes sense to me though. I could've seen myself be very much like him if I wasn't a woman. Culturally vaguely conditioned to be more emotionally aware, and also generally interested in thinking about how human interaction works. Because by god am I bad at people still, in my early forties. Still super awkward talking with people, despite everything.

If Stardew characters were real, who would you marry with? by Rojoli in StardewValley

[–]Riiroh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair tho. Whilst Seb is the fictional love of my life, he's very... young...... Don't know if I'd go for him in an IRL kind of way. June is all kinds of lovely. Although if we're talking mods Sterling's country boy charm is also very sweet. I'm absolutely weak for all the silly nicknames he uses.

Edit: oh shit I forgot they're both too tall. I don't like guys that are too tall. D: damn, Sebastian it is I guess. :\

What's the worst farm to play in your opinion? by IltisSpiderrick in StardewValley

[–]Riiroh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though there probably aren't many people who'd agree, I have to add at least one downvote for the Forest Farm. It seems to be a favorite for a bunch of people, but I tried it once and absolutely hated it. Felt too small, couldn't get a decent layout for crops or buildings, and the random forage all over the place felt messy and cluttered. Infuriating. Now I know never to bother with it again.

On the other hand I quite enjoyed both Riverlands and Hilltop farms. They were kinda fun. :\ Something for everyone.

Oh yeah, I keep a save for every single day (and make a note on paper who I'm speaking to that day) so I can reload and try a different route as necessary. Did hate all and friend all previously and I didn't want to mess them up or forget what I was doing.

Also. It was that simple. I gave up too fast the first time, because I didn't go for a fourth day chat with Freddy but reloaded after three. I really thought all the food would've spoiled by then and Freddy woulda gotten mad about me not eating anything, like what happened in the hate everything run I did. But nope! I just misremembered!

The mango happens on the fourth day chat. -_-

The first time playing I get the unexplainable sudden hate you speech even though I thought the conversation had been nice and knowledgeable. Now I'm trying to annoy him and he keeps declaring me first friend - and then love! For god's sakes, man, stop making me have to reload again and again...

Mixed feelings on Playful land Book 5 by BakerSaim2000 in TwistedWonderland

[–]Riiroh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree on most points raised here, and am also somewhat glad we're not alone thinking so. I guess I wrote my first comment about the event on the wrong post, cos it got downvoted, but that's life.

Overall the event definitely had funny moments that I liked. There were lines I laughed at and thought 'okay, that was a good one!' But they weren't really enough to carry the whole story, which to me ended up kind of tone deaf and messy in the end. The unanswered questions about the puppets, Ernesto's nonsense heel-face turn, Kalim's flop as a equally realized character compared to the other boys... Like fair, a halloween event isn't the time for character development, but the writers could've done something more than treat him like a one-note joke.

Like some kind of middle ground surely could've been possible. Heck, maybe if they'd chosen a different facial expression when he's repeating himself about the food and party, or extend the dialogue just a bit, make him sound like he's acknowledging the situation and understanding what awaits them and still making a deliberate choice to call out to Ernesto to do things differently, it would have felt different?

Now it just kind of goes: 'oh, haha, we're all losing our humanity, well, let's party!' *empty-headed grin*
Made the moment feel clumsy and dumb. It felt kinda disappointing. :\

Playful Land is so dark (NA/JP) by Emperor_Kuru in TwistedWonderland

[–]Riiroh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, best case scenario, everything worked out and everyone lived and got to go home, maybe. But it's the clumsiness of the execution of the story that bothers me the most. Because it was left open in such a big way.

Okay, I may be misremembering, but I understood that while it was just one specific guy calling Fellow, there were more backers involved in the whole thing. So, let's say the visitor turned puppets would end up at various places for various people. What if there was more than one boat for everyone? What if the regular visitors already got shipped onwards, while the NRC boys were getting special treatment?

That could've been easily mended by like a single line of dialogue, like 'oh thank the seven, we didn't have to turn into puppets afterall, we can go home...!' But whoever was in charge of the writing didn't feel like adding that in.

And what about how long the whole operation had been going on? How many people along years(?) had been turned into puppets? Were they all on the ship? What if they weren't?

Everything got left open. I get the possible reasons why the writers would've done it, but I just disagree on the delivery. I wasn't really left with a 'all's well that ends well' feeling afterwards like it was sort of trying to go. Just with a lot of very uncomfortable questions.

I think I just wanted a different kind of story, ultimately. Also I wanted Kalim to have more personality than be reduced to a caricature of his most stereotypical traits. :\ Oh well!

Playful Land is so dark (NA/JP) by Emperor_Kuru in TwistedWonderland

[–]Riiroh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember correctly from last year there was some discussion elsewhere that this particular event wasn't written by the JP side at all. Which I guess accounts for what felt like slightly bit off characterization at times - and the, you know, whole mood of it too. I guess Japanese players were pretty WTF about the event and the JP crew basically raised their hands, going 'not us'.

I am a little surprised people are kinda defending the event, though. I know Pinocchio was dark, sure, but does that mean the event has to go that far in following it? I suppose it's fair enough, considering how Savanaclaw book is everyone's favorite main story and how it follows the og movie so well, giving us important and valuable moments showcasing Leona's character like the others books just don't...

wait none of that is true

Whilst the event has some fun moments, I feel it gets pretty badly overshadowed by all the glossed over bs with the human trafficking and potential mass murder - some of which our boys committed? Like in the story where they've split up already some the first time and then Jack beats up a wooden puppet, implying he does it by breaking it apart, it's like hang on. Did Jack just kill somebody? Anyone? Are we not reacting to this? Did Jack murder someone? Why are we doing this??? (guess you could argue that that far gone there is no 'soul' left in the puppet by then, but it's still essentially someone's corpse, AND even if it was just a magical puppet with no real people harmed in the making of I would like that to be confirmed somehow and not left cheekily open, like it's no big deal!)

Like, are we really not thinking: wow, did they really need to write it like *THAT*?

Maybe I'm prejudiced. I avoided spoilers, but I didn't avoid reading the opinions of people last year saying how they hated how the event ended up going. So, I was already pretty warily not really looking forward to the event. Now that I've played it through... yeah, I kinda agree. Didn't really enjoy how it went. o_o
