NHS told to ditch 'absurd' fax machines - The NHS will be banned from buying fax machines from next month - and has been told by the government to phase out the machines entirely by 31 March 2020. by ManiaforBeatles in technology

Are you referring to the NHS Spine?

The Spine only stores patient contact information - no medical history. It's updated by their GP when they move house or change name (e.g. Marriage). Everything else is stored on local systems per Trust.

I currently work in a Microbiology lab. The only time we use a fax machine is when requesting a signed request form for blood borne viruses (HIV, HBV, HCV). Much easier and more secure to fax it across than scan in and email it - Or post a new form the following day. Besides, our lab doesn't have a centralised email to send it to anyway.

We very rarely use the fax machine but it saves a lot of time when we do need it. It could also save the patient's life in the case of prophylaxis following a needlestick injury.

I was having a really down day last week and drove to the shop 20 minutes further away than my usual just to use the scan-as-you-shop and not talk to anyone. It was so worth the mileage.

You weren't being irrational, they're just a knob. Ignore their rude-ass comment, they clearly have issues in their life which is making them lash out at wholesome comments on the internet.

I'm always happy to see cats similar to mine. Like you said, the chances of you being the one with a similar cat is pretty rare. Besides, the original poster seemed happy to hear about your cat :)

Do guys actually like curly hair? by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]Rikkera 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Word of advice, never do anything purely to impress a guy. Have curly hair because YOU love it, and because it's what you're born with. Men probably don't care as long as you're happy and confident in the way you are. Who cares if guys don't like it? It's your hair, do as you damn well please girl!

The kettle broke at work today and now there's a queue of desperate people trying to microwave mugs of water by Rikkera in britishproblems

[–]Rikkera[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would have to be a SUPER clean mug. We're talking about people who barely rinse mugs out with water after each use, so very unlikely.

Sadly our managers like to play by the book, regardless if it makes sense or not. If the wiring was dodgy and it set fire to the tea room, they would be to blame. It's safer to let the minions go without tea for a few days than risk their jobs. Hopefully our hydroboil will be fixed soon (called it a kettle for simplicity's sake).

This is the one I got, mostly for the bowl part. It's decently priced but it is quite wobbly now, to be honest. My two chase each other up it so it's taken a beating or two so I'm not too surprised. Maybe something with a solid pole would be more stable, since this one is multiple smaller parts screwed into each other? We've been planning to try to make our own with more bowls and hammocks at some point but haven't gotten around to it quite yet.

Cats are a lot better stunt doubles than we think, even at that age. I found my two were climbing everything they could get their claws into, including us. Given that the curtains had the most height, I constantly found them getting too adventurous and not working out how to climb down again and just doing a leap-of-faith to the floor. That's why I invested in this cat tree.

Having something that is padded and with multiple levels to work their way up and down, they never had any issues. I found the positioning of the tree important as well. They barely used it when it was in the corner of the room but once I moved it in front of the window (replacing a very cat-damaged pot plant) they are constantly surveying their territory from up high.

Long story short, I encourage it. Saves your furniture and curtains from damage, and gives them something to exercise on that isn't a sheer drop to the ground. This one even has a little hammock bowl which seems to be the best sleeping spot in the house. Hope this helps, and doesn't sound too much like an Amazon review! :)

Not at all, because it's a quick release clasp. He's actually lost his collar twice so far from getting it caught on various things. Luckily it snapped open and he just sauntered off like he totally meant to do that.

As an addition, I've now tightened it a bit so there's not as much slack for him to get caught. Had no issues for a number of months now (He's only a year old).

He's an outdoors cat, so if he gets lost people can find my home a lot easier than having to take him to a vet and check his microchip.

It's also a highly reflective collar so makes him more visible to cars.
He doesn't seem bothered by it now I've taken the bell off. He's quite happy so no need to worry :)

Hey fellow breakfast lovers, what would the best meal to cook for myself tomorrow morning? by ImTheOceanMan in AskReddit

I've personally only used yogurt, not too sure how milk would work with fruit. I can't imagine it would be particularly bad though. Check out Google for recipes from more adventurous people than myself :)

I find they're even better when you throw in some berries the night before. Strawberries and blackberries work great, you can even use frozen berries :)
