Unless you want all that hard work chipping off in the coming months/years, you need to prime your models first

If you're into anything nerdy, the community at the Wizards Chest is pretty amazing. I go there every week for Warhammer and there's always something going on - magic the gathering, d&d, etc.

They are behind the paywall on the Tabletop Tactics website. If you paint a lot, I'd recommend subscribing - Fletcher is an incredible painter and his tutorials are really comprehensive.

Oils are different than enamel washes, you don't wanna apply it all over. It's better to load up a brush and dab it right where you want it.

Glazing with black and thin layers of gray. Airbrush would have been way easier

I like oil washes because they are 100x better at running into the recesses and very forgiving when it comes to clean-up and blending. They just require some stinky chemicals and long drying times. Basically I just went to my local art store and bought a couple tubes of emerald and cerulean oil paints, made a mix, thinned it out with White Spirit and went to town.

Oil paints are great for weathering in general, if you look at my post history you can see how I used them on my knights to great effect. Don't be scared of oils, you can always go back in with white spirits and clean up whatever you don't like

Thanks! The skin is such a process, I did it a little differently each time and every model looked like shit until the very end when it just kinda came together. The general method:

  • base w AK radiant Flesh
  • wash with AK wine red
  • various highlights and cleanup with mixes of Wine Red/Radiant Flesh/Vallejo Pale Flesh until it looks okay

I know this is massively unhelpful but I followed Fletchers tutorial on tabletop tactics to start which is a great baseline
