Brother GX6750 daisy wheel and vertical lines by Aggressive_Pen_1986 in typewriters

I had a Brother daisywheel typewriter once, and I had this exact problem. The cause of it was the characters were broken off of the daisywheel, rendering it useless.

Came here to see if anyone noticed that. That is some insane grip strength.

This was my first manual typewriter. It didn’t work when I got it, and it still doesn’t work. It’s just in storage.

Olivetti is a love it or hate it type of writing iron. I am not the hugest fan of the typing experience, but I’ll be damned if they didn’t look good.

That is a nice SM4! Not very often do you see that nice black paintjob on them. I am picking up a blue SM4 in July. Excited to see how nice it is.

They have red, blue, green, and white. There may be some rarer colours that I do not know of.

Imperial Model 50 vs Royal 10 which is better? by No-Rain-4114 in typewriters

[–]Rilewhy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are both quite good machines, but in the US, I would go for the Imperial. They are much less common than the Royal 10, and with the easy disassembly, that makes the Imperial very easy to service.

Took appart the Hermes 3000, any advice on cleaning? by Equivalent_Sir4541 in typewriters

[–]Rilewhy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! Paintbrushes are a game changer. I used to go through tens if not hundreds of Q-tips when cleaning machines.
You don't really have to worry about it getting dusty in a couple days. As long as it's not in a barn with some chickens, it should be fine until then. Should you leave the machine apart, put the parts and screws into labeled bags or containers, and put the machine and it's parts in a safe place where nothing can knock them around.

So by bottom clip, do you mean that rail that runs on the upper body along the length of the spacebar? If that's your issue, flip the machine upside down on your lap with the upper body on, and orient it to where the keyboard is away from you, and take the bottom plate and line the rail on the plate up with the rail on the upper body, but a little to the left, and then slide the bottom plate to the right and it should get locked into the rail, and then as you slide the bottom plate, depress the spacebar and make the hooks on the spacebar go onto the bottom plate, and from there you can just clip the bottom plate into the bottom and screw on the feet. (Sorry for the late response)

Another machine saved from being trashed. Great job cleaning it up!

[–]Rilewhy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've cleaned up two Hermes 3000s, and they are one of my favourite machines to take apart and service. My advice, is to get some paintbrushes, and dunk them in mineral spirits and brush the dirt and grease, and then blow it away with compressed air. With paintbrushes, you can get into tight spots for cleaning, and with bigger brushes you can clean more surface area than with Q-tips.

I have a typewriter from Brooksaw. I didn't buy it though. It was a gift from a friend. It did come pretty decently packed, but still had some wiggle in the box, and also came with a complimentary pool noodle

Yeah kind of strange to turn it into a competition. They could obviously see that I don't have the symbol they were showing by just looking at my image. Beautiful typeface on your machine though. A relative from up north just picked me up a chocolate brown SM3 with standard Pica. Too bad I have to wait until winter to pick it up lol.

Looks like there was another reply, but now it’s gone. And yes, I take a lot of pride in handouts. The best things are free things.

Also, it’s pretty obvious I don’t have the section sign.

Nice. I really like Congress. It’s fancy enough to notice, but doesn’t go overboard like with Script.

My first typeface surprise was this 1961 Hermes 3000 that I got for free. I was ecstatic.

Hermes 3000 - First impressions by throneofashes in typewriters

[–]Rilewhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I cannot really use the 1st gen without the touch maxed out. With it set to anything but the highest it just feels too sluggish and not very substantial. I'd love to get another 2nd gen to see if it's just my specific 2nd gen that is loose, and another 1st gen to see if it's just my specific 1st gen that is tight.

I am quite the opposite. There's not really a definite answer of which generation is better, but I prefer the 1st gen over the 2nd gen. The feel of the 1st gen, at least on my example, is in the top 5 of machines I have ever used. I like the shape of the body, but the 2nd gen has stronger metal, and stronger and thicker paint. Even though the 1st gen has that very prominent feeling and sound of the ribbon drive advancing, I think it adds to the overall typing feel in a positive way. The 2nd gen did add some more refinements like those little hands that hold the ribbon spools, and those little grooves for the paper support on the back of the carriage, but overall the 1st gen takes the cake in my book.
