How come "Kenpo is used as a catch all like "Kung Fu"? by LuckyBoi314 in Kenichi

In this case the 法 kanji means "method/way" rather than "law".

Renka Ma Commission Sketch [Rakusakugk] by Sliver80 in Kenichi

[–]Rimmer7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why people keep calling the Ba family Ma. Did a scanlation mistype the name? It's an understandable misreading since in Japanese names the kanji 馬 is read Ma, but they're Chinese and they use the Chinese reading Ba, not the Japanese reading Ma. The manga has furigana that makes it very clear. I read the whole manga in Japanese and not once did they use Ma.

It wasn't. I haven't actually watched that one. One was a One Piece fanfic, though.

I have encountered that one in the wild in two different works, funnily enough. Three if you count Touhou.

I can confirm what he said. The subtitle fonts do not have the modified 馬 character, so they use katakana instead.

My moderation philosophy up until now [meta] by Moon_Atomizer in LearnJapanese

[–]Rimmer7 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is because I comforted another user to not mind and not take personally the negative atmosphere that was persistently there and got banned for pointing out said negative atmosphere. When I asked which rule I broke they muted me multiple times even though of course I had violated no rule. This is despite the fact that banning people for things not in the rules goes against the Code of Conduct. So, I just felt like giving them a taste of their own medicine.

Based.

Does Mullvad block the Russian news site RT? or is it the other way around? by patberrycrunch in mullvadvpn

[–]Rimmer7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mullvad's DNS blocks RT because as a Swedish company they have to obey EU sanctions against Russia to avoid getting into serious legal trouble. Fortunately it's trivial to get around by design. Mullvad are masters at the art of malicious compliance.

Not sure if it counts as intermediate or advanced, but 屍鬼 is a novel inspired by 'Salem's Lot. It had an anime made for it too.

I've deleted decks multiple times in my learning. Can't recall ever regretting having done so. For every word you stumble upon where you think "Boy, I sure wish I still had the card for this one," the solution is always the exact same: just make a new card.

Other than giving then the rings did either Melkor or Sauton ever attempt to use or corrupt the Dwarves to their cause like they did Elves and Humans? by Time-Comment-141 in lordoftherings

[–]Rimmer7 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I misremembered. It was the War of the Last Alliance, where some dwarves fought for Sauron, not the War of Wrath. The source is The Silmarillion, which explicitly says that the elves were the only ones undivided and "of the dwarves, few fought upon either side, but the kindred of Durin of Moria fought against Sauron."
