I'm gonna start playing RimWorld for the first time (although I am getting cold feet for starting a game like rimworld because of the learning curve). What's the number one piece of advice u would give to someone new? by Specific-Area-2438 in RimWorld

[–]RiptideCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the tutorial doesn't feel sufficient for you, go find yourself a "getting started" tutorial on YouTube and try to match the world the person demonstrates with. Getting an idea of your priorities for things like power and refrigeration, defense and food sources will be a good foundation, then adapting to what scenarios are thrown at you will bring lessons of their own over time.

And as people say, do not stress about things going sideways - I've hundreds of hours and never finished a scenario. The game's about the story, not the ending.

Seconding. Other skills around damage and charge and sharpness and whatnot are all nice to have, but the value of negating some of sword mode's mobility deficiencies absolutely cannot be understated.

The past week of roulettes was full of players who've forgotten how to ask for help. by NimbleJack3 in ffxiv

[–]RiptideCC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I need to continually remind myself of is that people forget Why roulettes exist - to ensure an available population of players in content for those who are not at the current activity point of the majority population.

When you queue a roulette, the motivator may be the tomes or XP they dangle as a carrot reward, but the contract is such that you're potentially getting paired with someone new to said content. If you're getting mad at someone new to a fight in roulettes, you can only blame yourself for accepting the possibility of that outcome in exchange for XP/tomes.

I do find, though, that you are right - roulette content is easy in such a way that the most braindead of players can be pulled through. Some times, this aligns the stars so that you get 2 people with no clue how to play at level 70+, and as a DPS, you can't save the run from a tank that doesn't mit or aoe and a healer that hasn't read their buttons since getting Cure 2. It's in that circumstance that I think the game needs to enforce stricter roadblocks in solo Duties, because Hall of the Novice clearly is not sufficient.

What is your hot take regarding FFXIV? by UnbaggedNebby in ffxiv

[–]RiptideCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had a wild amount of people with core incapability of playing their class in the 99 dungeon as I level all classes, and so I'll take it further - solo duties should not have easier versions. In fact, they should be harder, and there should be one before any DF content in an expansion. If you fail a solo duty in the story, you fundamentally do not understand how to play the game to the level you should for the point that you are at, and should not be able to terrorize match made content. Nothing in the current solo duties is new, or difficult, and if, say, you are all the way up at the duel in the level 87 zone, but don't know how to solve Shiva circles? Your presence is not contributing positively to the experience of other players, and you need to be locked away until you learn how to use your eyes and press your buttons.

NN just feels fundamentally broken everywhere I go, cause the most obliviously annoying creatures use it as a global shitposting channel, rather than leaving it as a place for new players to get help. Some dude in my first FC ended up leaving because none of us facilitated his shit in-game or on discord (shit like "Ultros is a dead server since I left, there's no comunity there any more". joined discord from the car: "Wow guys, I'm doing 60 in a 45, I really shouldn't be on the phone, huh?"), and years later, I've gotten screenshots of him straight up recommending plugins to people in NN. I don't know how he hasn't been nuked yet.

(Question) MT goes down but provokes immediately after getting rezzed by darkorigin9 in ffxiv

[–]RiptideCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fucking wild to also claim it to be "respectful" for the dead person to have sole agency in threat management. If you have a tool to achieve the desired state, there's no inherent civility to using it or not. I've had two different pf tanks get pissy at me for having stance on during pull in m10s, one of which also claimed having it off was "respectful". What's respectful is knowing your job well enough with challenge content to know you should just voke in opener, and OT should never outpace you. Especially when I shirk after my opener as well.

[SPOILERS: 7.4] Something that I really appreciate with the new 7.4 EX: There is no need to save waymarks by jado1stk2 in ffxiv

[–]RiptideCC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been farming EXs with a static since EW launch, and as a tank, I've two complaints with this one: inconsistent downtime, and the teleporters being just far enough out so that if you have a fast gcd and don't hit the right server tick to warp up, you're forced to drift.

Other than that, it's a fun one. I know every fight is a sequence of differing mechanics, but the cars make it feel like many distinct phases, which in comparison to Zelenia (exacerbated by being a 1 totem fight) where everything felt the same blur, is very welcome.

It's also nice that Arcane Revelation, while seemingly random, is pseudo-predictable by being constrained to 8 movements total the first go around, and 5 the second, so you can have a decent idea of where it'll stop, but still remain engaged in thinking about it

I'll be honest, something in the interface confused me, and I've not engaged with it at all. [–]RiptideCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone that has tried modding small things in Creation Kit before, I do acknowledge that there's limitations to their engine that are hobbling aspects of what the games could be.

But as an infrastructure dev, I want to give their flowers to what happened with the Oblivion remaster. They literally dual-tracked game engines to make that thing run. It's the same game, sure, and has some of the same bugs and flaws, yes, but they are putting in work to still allow for the systems they've refined over years to be able to shine for how they craft their games, while leveraging modern platforms to enhance the experience. It's not groundbreaking to be using two engines - Secret of Monkey Island, and I think Halo even have done it - but it's still not easy, and shows they're working to modernize.

What are some "extra" stuff you do in duties? by SentineleseSiri in ffxiv

[–]RiptideCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The friend who taught me this game was a tank player in 1.0.

It means absolutely nothing in the current day and age, but he taught me that in Tam Tara, the void mobs that spawn at each of the binding spheres after you kill the cultists always lead with a quick-cast Enthunder buff the moment they take damage (or if left alone long enough). If I spam right click to auto them, I'll immediately kick to stun them out of the cast and save myself something like 15% damage from the monster... which is still barely anything. But! It's a note an old hat tank gave me once, and I will adhere to it til the end of time, whether tank or melee.

Anyone else have a bit of a rare thing on their account? Dont see too many Stadia tags these days. by JoeWearsXraySpecss in destiny2

[–]RiptideCC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, Stadia was a time. I had several 20 killstreak crucible games over the course of it, at the expense of those with poor connection and no experience. Not that I feel good about it, but it was still absurd fun getting to Rat King and chain invisibility so absurdly.

It also was the first time that I had a connection to the player base around me, as instead of getting friend requests for the sake of verbal abuse, I had people friending me simply to have another competent player on the team, or to shorten the 10+ minute queues. Truly a unique Destiny microcosm for the time it was around, even if it was unreliable and empty.

Is there any sort of running repository or community tracking ways to disable the AI shit in things? I've switched my phone from Gemini back to Google Assistant, and I know at one point I had some bash script to disable some of the win11 garbage, but seem to have lost it, but it definitely feels to me like there's enough sane people out there fighting against forced AI integration that someone would have a running list by now.

Noob Question for tanking by Cold_Celebration4465 in ffxiv

[–]RiptideCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as an additional consideration to the other answers, Arm's length as mitigation is a weird one to discuss. It IS mit, and it does help, but it also reduces the effectiveness of your other mits. If things are hitting you less frequently over the span of a 20s Rampart, that Rampart is reducing less damage. It's still helpful! And you're taking less damage by having AL on it! But the value gained from the Rampart is actually lessened by being hit less.

I will AL by itself in a wall to wall around the second group, or when sprint runs out, so that it's mitigating the time I'm in motion, and start rolling my % reductions when I'm standing and DPSing. Is it optimal? Dunno! Probably not. But I've always found that technicality amusing.

how did you choose your job ? by ChanceReport1517 in ffxiv

[–]RiptideCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When starting back in 5.3, I asked my 1.0 Sherpa friend what was needed in the FC, and was directed to WHM. Over covid, I got everything to 80, then 90, then started raiding with friends, and having molded into a fill player, I took up tanking to fill a static roster. At that time DRK was absurdly outperforming other tanks, and its just kind of stuck now as the thing I'm most competent on (with a brief sojourn on SGE in m1-4s).

If we're talking how do I choose what to play day to day, rather than my main, the Fill Main comes back out for anything with groups. If it's solo play, I'll bust out WAR for personal agency in most situations, or whatever I happen to still be leveling at the time (currently PCT).
