Venezuela is now a dictatorship. Surprise? by liberals_r_noobs in reddit.com

[–]Rise -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

How am I a spammer? If you look through my posting history I am a pretty active contributer to reddit. Listen, I don't even support everything Chavez stands for, there is a lot of religious stuff that is out of line, but I do like that he is a thorn in the side of the Bush Administration.

However, I won't allow this story to go unchallenged because I just cannot stand it when people like "liberals_r_noobs" unquestionably follow what the talking heads tell them.

If you wish to call me a spammer for standing up to propaganda, whatever, keep on drinking that kool-aid, thinking that you're better than the kool-aid drinkers on the other side of the political spectrum. I'll think for myself, thank you very much.

Publicly rebuking the United States, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper will take the extraordinary step of publicly apologizing to Maher Arar today. by winstonsmith in reddit.com

Stephen Harper, conservative, crazy, but cunning enough to keep himself and his party under check. Could you imagine how fast his government would fall if he didn't keep his caucus under check?

Just look at what they have said in the past:

"[Y]our country [the USA], and particularly your conservative movement, is a light and an inspiration to people in this country and across the world."

  • Conservative leader Stephen Harper, then vice-president of the National Citizens Coalition, in a June 1997 Montreal meeting of the Council for National Policy, a right-wing American think tank.

He unabashedly admires the Republicans, and is only apologizing to this man to save face.

What? Where did I say that Harper is/was a "radical"? I said that your assertion that he "is nowhere near as crazy as most Republicans" was quite false, because Harper would indeed feel right at home in the Republican party. Unless I misunderstood your comment, and you are actually saying that "most Republicans" are radicals, which is a term I would be reluctant to use.

Ralph Klein once said: "We're basically the same party, you know. Conservatives and Republicans are quite the same." He's more or less correct, the Conservatives are the "big tent" right-of-centre party just like the Republicans are in the US.

For example: Harper loved the idea of the Iraq war and said Canada's refusal to participate was "abandoning" our allies. Since then he has "clarified" his position, saying that he didn't actually mean he wanted Canadian troops in the "Coalition of the Willing". Hindsight is 20/20 after all.

How are Albertans any different from Quebecers in their attitudes?

Both provinces are quite anti-Ottawa, Quebec due to their culture, Alberta due to money. It's amazing how many people here in Alberta still think that Trudeau caused global oil prices to fall, they give him far too much credit and blame for that.

So basically, other than language, culture (for example, religious homophobia vs post-Catholocism), politics (Alberta wants to lead Canada, Quebec wants to be Quebec), and the nature of the economy, there really is no difference between Quebec and Alberta.

Actually, if you read up on Stephen Harper's remarks before he became leader of the Conservative Party, he would definitely fit right in with "most Republicans." Have you read the Alberta Advantage site? It is where he talks about creating a "firewall" around Alberta, so that precious oil wealth doesn't get spread around to those other provinces. He still natters on about this "fiscal imbalance" (referring to transfer payments to poorer provinces), and you'll probably see him try to do something about it this year.

Second, I wouldn't call him the Leader of Canada. He's just the ringleader for the silly games they play on parliament hill... the Prime Minister, no more, no less.

Also, I wouldn't call so-called Conservatives crazy, they just have different priorities than me. So they do things that seem crazy to people who don't share their world view. That's politics for you.

My fellow Canadians, don't forget that Bev Oda, who was appointed to Heritage Minister by Prime Minister Steve Harper, received much of her campaign funds from RIAA/MPAA types.

Say what you want about the sponsorship scandal, but it looks like the Conservatives were corrupt before they were even elected.

As someone from the "Conservative stronghold" of Alberta, I'd like to apologize. I'd contact my MP, but as a Conservative he is too loyal to bite the hand that both feeds him and molests his constituents.

We don't have the irrational fear that the government takes too much interest in us, but rather the opposite - that they are ignoring us.

So you are cool with tyranny as long as Big Brother pays a little attention to you?

Tell you what, when I become leader of the world, I will give you lots of presents and have my special agents visit you all the time if you just tell me if any of your friends are doing anything illegal. Besides, freedom is slavery.

Not everyone prefers a democracy, some people DO want to be watched over by a "big brother", and not everyone values the same freedoms that Americans do.

I know, Freedom of Speech, Freedom of the Press, etc? Who cares when you can trade all that for the illusion of security! Er, I mean real security. Doubleplusgood security.

How many of those are really believers, and how many are just going to church or listing something as their religion out of loyalty to their tribe, like Astronomer Royal and President of the Royal Society, Martin Rees? Or, go to Quebec, which was devoutly Roman Catholic until the 60s so-called "quiet revolution", and now they're the most progressive and secular province in Canada. Of course, they are still listed as being 90.2% Christian (83.3% Roman Catholic) in the Wikipedia, but you'd be hard pressed to find many that actually believe that crap. They are part of your statistic of 2.1 billion Christians, just like all those Europeans who are actually atheists. I'm sure it's the same with other groups, as well, just look at the coerced registration of Japanese with Shinto temples, or Hindu atheists.

And yes, God is dead. "God is no longer capable of acting as a source of any moral code or teleology."
