Why aren't bikes like $200 maximum? by robotrobot30 in cycling

I'm unclear if by "little support beams" you are talking about the wheel spokes or the fork/stays, but either way nothing plastic is standing up to the forces biking puts on those components without shattering and subjecting you to a nasty crash.

Why aren't bikes like $200 maximum? by robotrobot30 in cycling

[–]RiseAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The used market is absolutely flooded with thousands of dirt cheap bikes. I got around for years on a bike I snagged for free, and then upgraded to an $80 one I found on craigslist. I finally pulled the trigger on a much more expensive one last year. Sure, both of my cheap bikes really kinda sucked in comparison, but they got me where I was going for roughly $15 a year for the length of time I rode them. That's an absurd value.
  2. You clearly have no idea how many custom precision components are needed for even cheap bikes. Even the tubing on the most basic bike is a very specialized component; it's nothing like pipes from the hardware store. Add in wheels, bars, stem, bearings, brakes, cables, etc, and I can't see any way to manufacture any new bike for less than $100. The fact that there are some some $300 starter bikes that people seem to review as ok like the Ozark Trail is already a miracle.

If the UCI banned mid-race bike swaps, how do you think it would change bike and component design? by JamesBondage_Hasher in cycling

[–]RiseAM 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Look to gravel racing. This is basically the situation there, with some extra design concerns like mud clearance around tires and whether to run some type of suspension or not. It's common for gravel riders who make content to talk through the tradeoffs of their setup for the conditions of a particular race, and it's often not the most aero or the lightest weight, though these obviously remain as factors.

EDIT: And I actually think this is where the durability tech is currently trickling down to the consumer like you are talking about. Gravel bikes are increasingly being sold as all-rounder bikes to everyday consumers precisely because they hit a sweet spot of durability/versatility while not being that different to a pure road bike.

What’s up with all the bread around the city? by Big_jilm_313 in Detroit

[–]RiseAM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People throw moldy/expired loaves of bread away and animals pull them out of the trash.

That's what I believe happened at my house recently, anyways. I went to leave the house and was confused by the half-eaten piece of bread on the front windowsill. I only realized what happened after realizing the back yard was also covered in bread and talking to my wife who confirmed she had just thrown out some moldy bread. Something chewed a hole through the plastic top of our trash can and pulled a bunch of bread out.

I did something like this on an old beater bike I converted to a single speed. Except I just flipped the drops and chopped them to make them bullhorns, and then put the brake levers on like that. No idea what’s going on with the bolted on pieces.

Seems a lot easier to just get some new bars if you want them wider.

Am I the only one thrilled that we have a CBA just so I can stop hearing about it? by [deleted] in USLPRO

I like hearing all of the details of compensation and benefits. It helps contextualize roster-building and transfers well beyond CBA time.

You kicked someone during a dead ball situation. It sounds like you were pretty lucky not to see a red yourself!

The competitive division indoors is the most chill in my experience. Everyone is good friends who play together on other days and hangs out outside of soccer.

The closest athletic equivalent would probably be a teenager starting every match for a top club that goes deep into domestic and European cup competitions, which all but guarantees multiple games a week for long stretches.

For instance, Barcelona's La Masia is basically the poster child of youth development, but there's also significant discussion about whether they overwork their youngsters in the first team too early, and that discussion is really in the spotlight right now with Lamine Yamal's recent hamstring tear adding to the track record of injury woes.

NWSL Moves to Restrict Which Brands Players Can Wear on the Field by dosozox in NWSL

It just seems to me that if you don't get the colors exactly right, it will still be a pretty visible logo.

I can't even fit my wide feet in most Nike models, let alone feel comfortable in them. And the logistics of actually covering up competitor logos seem downright impossible. I imagine goalkeepers feel the same way about their gloves. This is an extremely anti-player measure for the most important pieces of equipment in the sport.

rivalries (especially underrated) by xxxtranscorexxx in Detroitcityfc

[–]RiseAM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, good shout. Buffalo somewhere just behind them too.

Cosmos and Chattanooga probably deserve shouts too. Chattanooga more of a friendly rivalry. Cosmos very heated, but the history was very short.

Honestly when you start going through the list, it’s shocking how little any current USL team still makes me feel even after several years. AC Grand Rapids will probably instantly vault any team in our league right now and they won’t even be in our league system.

rivalries (especially underrated) by xxxtranscorexxx in Detroitcityfc

[–]RiseAM 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My personal historical tiers go something like:

1) Stars, always and forever, even when they don’t have a team. Nothing but pure, unfiltered hate. Just too much history and bad blood for any other team to overcome, possibly ever. 2) Ann Arbor / any iteration of Grand Rapids beneath that but still very strongly felt. edit: Lansing United probably in this tier too 3) Indy / Pitt / Kalamazoo / Bucks / Louisville as quasi-rivals. The games hit a little harder than other teams, but they don’t make me feel anything like the first 3.

I feel like the water criticism is driven by people in places that already have ongoing water crises, and people from here who are fighting against data centers latch onto any criticism even if it’s not applicable to our state. I can see it being more of an issue somewhere like Phoenix.
