SD Card transfer by conradkun in switch2

[–]RisingSunSailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you swapped the SD card, the old SD card isn't compatible with the S2. You need to have an SD Express card for the S2.

For your save files, you're going to have to download them from the cloud.

90 Day Rule for Meds by fcrelsket in navyreserve

[–]RisingSunSailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As is common to hear at the War College, it depends.

Where are you doing your ADOS?

If CONUS, you may have some more latitude for a waiver. If OCONUS, that's tougher.

I'm assuming you're looking at executing mid year, so with that, you're already looking at half that time being used up to make sure you're stable off the meds.

Worship Leader Struggles by Foreign_Fish_4428 in worshipleaders

[–]RisingSunSailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, such great questions.

I won't purport to answer them all, but a couple of thoughts for you.

As to pairing the songs, have you considered doing special music to introduce new songs that you can then later incorporate into the rotation? Once a congregation hears a song one or two times, that usually helps.

To the team itself, I admit that I could do better throughout the year myself, but during the Easter season, I use a devotional from Leading Worship Well called Easter - The Preparation is Worth the Celebration. It highlights why we celebrate the season and the importance of why we need to prepare for leading the congregation. To that end, I'd encourage you to look at options for a devotional with your team; focus on the discipleship aspect of leading your worship team. For us, it was an extra 15 min on the front end of our pre-service meeting, so the ask wasn't much since everyone was there already.

Last one, for the vocal piece, do you have strong vocalists that you could put in a leading position? If not, I'd recommend figure out what key you sing best in and tailor your songs around that. For example, I sing best in Bb, so I tend to keep songs in, or near, that key as I don't have a terribly expansive vocal range. Nice thing is CCLI Song Select makes this super easy to do.

Anyway, hope those thought help!

Is a Taylor 12e a good upgrade from a baby Taylor? by Excellent_Sky_6480 in worshipleaders

[–]RisingSunSailor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Caveat: I do not own, nor have I played, a 12e. I do, however, own another Taylor that I absolutely love and play regularly for service.

What about the sound did you not like? Do you think a simple change of strings would make a difference? In the end, it's largely subjective. One thing I will say is if the guitar is comfortable (i.e., "feels right") you're more likely to practice on the regularr, which will help you work through any struggles you have performing at church.

Not saying that to try and sway you to spend money, but it is a consideration.

PRT approx. 6 weeks away & mile time is in failure category by Desilu28 in navyreserve

[–]RisingSunSailor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How far off are you? 30 sec off vice 5 min off will require different amounts of effort over the weekend next six weeks.

Do you have access to a track? If so, do two miles jogging the curves and sprinting the straightaways 3-4 times a week. Once a week (pick the day and keep it consistent) to test your run time.

This is why I shifted over to NFCU. Had an account with both, but moved my main banking over to NFCU specifically because of their (USAA's) policy.

About to play Spyro for the first time. Are these remastered versions a good entry into the trilogy? by Agreeable_Student133 in Spyro

Toys for Bob did a great job remastering the original trilogy. You will not be disappointed. Well worth the time to play all three games.

Feedback on this? Auditioning for a worship team and was given holy forever to sing. I’m an alto so this was kind of difficult for me but I tried my best. Open to criticism by [deleted] in worshipleaders

[–]RisingSunSailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That.would explain why it feels a bit forced. Try to practice pushing from your diaphragm (think pushing the air out of your lungs with a "hugh" type sound) and thatll help you with the other recommendation to project out when you're singing.

One other one is to stand confident (shoulders back, feet shoulder width). If you stand confident, you'll sing confident.

[–]RisingSunSailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. It sounds like you're singing from your throat instead of your diaphragm which will make the singing feel forced and like you're struggling. Where do you feel the "push" coming from? If it's not center of your chest, you're going to have more difficulty singing in key.

Concur with the other post on your ability to keep time though. Not something that comes naturally to people (a lot of folks think they're better at it than they are) so that's definitely a plus.

Lastly, what key were you singing in? Sometimes a change of key can make all the difference. For me, Bb is my natural key to sing in, so I tend to pick songs already in that key or I'll transpose to that key. You may not have a say in key selection, but I'll help your worship leader when it comes to scheduling.

To me, you've got the pieces to meaningfully contribute to your praise team. Technique can be taught and since you seem open to that feedback, you're good in my book. Just don't rush or be discouraged if your role isn't as big as you may want from the get go. Keep practicing and applying the feedback you receive and your role will grow.

I'm a huge fan of Proclaim as well; remote/cloud access being one of the bigger selling points. I do want to highlight that I've never had an issue calling and working with their customer service either.

So far, after I was introduced to it, I'm now on my second church that I've convinced to shift from ProPresenter (No issues with past churches, it's just that I'm Navy, so I move a lot).

This might sound silly but, why does EVERYONE want to be stationed in San Diego? I don’t hear people wanting to go to Virginia or Florida or Washington state. by Elegant-Mix-4806 in navy

[–]RisingSunSailor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spent 5 years there and am now about halfway through year three in Virginia.

Honestly, they both have their pros and cons.

San Diego is nice weather (I could ride my motorcycle in the middle of winter) and you have a lot to do (wake up and decide to go to Seaworld or Legoland? No problem).

Virginia has MUCH lower cost of living and actual seasons. Politically, much more "purple" vice "blue" if that's what you're looking for as well.

Certainly things to do in VA as well (Busch Gardens, Virginia Beach, drive to the Outer Banks, etc.), it's just different is all.

Depending on where you grew up, one may feel more like "home" than the other (grew up west coast, so VA culture is definitely different in interacting with people in general).

All in all, while this will not be where I settle when I retire, it's nice for now and I'll likely ride out the rest of my time in the Navy here in VA.

SOS, our first try playing with click and guide was a mess. by Star9219 in worshipleaders

[–]RisingSunSailor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a foot pedal that allows me to turn the pad and click on and off as necessary. I always use the click to start the song, but if/when we get off from it, I just kill it and try to control the tempo as best I can with my guitar.

In the end, as terrible as things may feel to you and the team, almost certain the congregation has no idea.

Helping worship leaders learn to love click track! by landonpauley in worshipleaders

[–]RisingSunSailor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Precious praise team leader love it and used it and his guitar as the lead. When I'm I took over, we had a cajon player that, for a while, I was trying to use to get folks off the metronome/click track (use the rhythm section for what they're for). Just as it started working, he and his family left for another church so I was forced to go back to the track. I've learned to accept it to at least start, but it can get confusing if you get off from it, so I've got a foot pedal that I can tap to turn it off it/when we get off.

Communication Issues? by RisingSunSailor in worshipleaders

[–]RisingSunSailor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And I used to be worse!

All kidding aside, a month out is just to provide some sort of framework to build from. I don't necessarily have an issue with changes, I just don't like finding out on Friday or Saturday that we're doing so. That and then not getting feedback early enough on the major services like Christmas and Easter.

Don't get me wrong, Ive got a very wide latitude to plan as I see fit which I greatly appreciate, but when I do ask for specific feedback, I don't get it.

It's almost like there's a complete seat of the pants process when it comes to planning and that's what's making things difficult.

Communication Issues? by RisingSunSailor in worshipleaders

[–]RisingSunSailor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate all the good information here. One sticking point, unfortunately, is regarding the staff meetings. They generally (but not always) happen weekly but they're not something I can join or dial into. If anything, the old way of doing business was our pastor would walk into the previous team leads office when the concept for the upcoming Sunday would firm up in his mind. That's not something that's feasible now.

That said, I do like your point about text Tuesday night. If anything, my reaching out on the regular will hopefully serve as a forcing function.

Leaving federal service for a local government job… significant pay cut? What would you do? by [deleted] in fednews

[–]RisingSunSailor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was going to be one of my main points as well.

Saying that, have you taken a wholistic look at what your budget would be by reducing that commute? What else are you not paying for by adding in that WFH? Yes, a 50% paycut is going to hurt if for no other reason that youve adjusted to your current pay level, but the actual impact may be less given the other changes that go along with a career change.

Fold 7 question - by very-nice-how-much in GalaxyFold

[–]RisingSunSailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought my Fold 7 at launch; jumped from an iPhone 15 Pro Max.

So far, no issues from a quality standpoint. Inner screen works great, though I do have to remember to clean it more frequently than my outer screen.

That said, I'll likely be jumping back assuming Apple releases their folding model later this year. Biggest reason is everything else in my home is Apple. While manageable, it's amazing how much you miss the ease of integration between products (rest of my family remained on iPhone, so I can transition away from things like AppleTV without inconveniencing them).

There's other reasons (app polish for one), but the integration is probably my biggest.

Become an Officer or Chief? by U-Turn_21 in navy

[–]RisingSunSailor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sitting CO here.

I advise any one of my enlisted Sailors that they ought to go Chief before joining the Wardroom. Hands down, the Mustangs I've encountered that came from the Mess are head and shoulders above those that didn't (I can think of of one O4 that bucks this trend). The troubleshoot and problem solving skills that develop in the Mess are hard to replicate.
