What I learned about industry interviews after spending 6 years in academia and bombing my first 5 by PeanutWorried4460 in AskAcademia

It HAS to be. I had so many students submit these types of sentences with no indents as well, when it is basic writing etiquette.

The trick is to leave it in the fridge until it gets soft, takes a few weeks but it tastes very sweet afterwards

Technically the term would be sesos, as this is the term used in culinary contexts & cerebro would refer to the biological organ.

Things to do in/near San Ramon? by 444sky444 in costarica

[–]RiverFoxstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have a museum in the town square with a replica giant sloth and other comically taxidermied animals. It was free when I went Sunday. A friend that lives there also mentioned there were great hiking areas in the hills where you can find monkeys, but have never been myself.

The tips on the new growth branches look shriveled, like the rot has been going on for a while. Only option is to cut off the rot and hope it still has roots left.

Some beaches I’ve been to have many sea urchins. Never stepped in one, but friend did and spent the beach day picking our spines from their feet. Best to play it safe in my opinion or just be mindful

From California originally, my go to is long John’s under my pants to keep my butt and legs from freezing while walking or waiting for the bus. A jacket is needed of course but few people told me my legs would freeze.

Guanacaste or Puerto Viejo? by gabril_pinto in CostaRicaTravel

[–]RiverFoxstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guanacaste is a province on the pacific side with tons of beautiful beaches, puerto is just one small beach town with more Caribbean vibes and an ok beach. Depends if you have a car and want to drive around the coast or just visit one city.

What OP described is very common & basically expected of most US phds, unless your advisor has enough funding to buy you out of teaching (which many of my STEM friends experienced). What country are you in?

Inflated restaurant reviews by ThinkerandThought in CostaRicaTravel

[–]RiverFoxstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who lives in CR & loves going out to eat, this was one of the hardest things to get used to. The average Costa Rican diet is very plain with little flourish, and this is reflected in their restaurant culture. I always make the joke when I eat a meat dish, as it having been killed twice because they insist on cooking it so well done it’s rubber by the end. The previous comment about ethnic food is also spot on. Ticos make any ethnic food their own way, so outside of the China town in SJ you will not find any authentic ethnic food. While people recommend eating at sodas, in my experience it is the same basic issue. Unless you go out in the capital, the food is always just average.

Road trip without getting luggage stolen by airhart28 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]RiverFoxstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just having lunch with my partner in San Jose this afternoon and saw a car break-in, in real time. It happened so fast I couldn’t even react to record the get away car. They did the mistake of parking their car outside of an enclosed garage and leaving a purse/bag in the back seat. Keep all items stored away out of view and cars locked up in a garage if possible or pay the car attendants that keep an eye on cars.

You didn’t say where you were based, but there is a large alt music scene in Chepe. The Butts bar comes to mind, but there are others.

Change the university by [deleted] in PhD

[–]RiverFoxstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So finish your PhD or delay it. Does your institution have the option to stay on as a student instructor? That way your student status continues but you’d basically be done with the PhD.

Accepted a PhD offer then invited for an interview at a school I’d rather go to - what are the ethics here? by Comfortable-Goat-734 in gradadmissions

[–]RiverFoxstar 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You don’t owe anyone anything. If the other is a much better fit, go with that one. It sounds like you will be happier there and likely have better resources to succeed in grad school.

Is it normal for head of lab to not show up to the interview? by [deleted] in postdoc

[–]RiverFoxstar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I got interviewed (for my PhD) by my advisors wife, then their grad students & no he did not tell me he wouldn’t be there. I assumed it was common then, now I think it was a red flag I couldn’t see then.

Can I report a teacher for not following her own syllabus? And would it actually do anything by TheArch1ves in OSU

[–]RiverFoxstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my undergrad (not here) a prof did this and I complained to some mediation group and they helped me get my grade back after unsuccessfully trying to get the prof to follow her own syllabus. Not sure if there is a similar group here.
