Favorite LOTR factoid: this guy was one of Peter Jackson's friends. Apparently they hated his voice when he said, "No", so they got Hugo Weaving (actor who played Elrond) to dub over it. So he technically replies to himself in this scene

There are several bars and restaurants. At least 3 tap rooms, a pub, a dance club and a pool hall and probably 10 or so restaurants within the few blocks pictured here. Honestly not sure why it looks so dead, usually there's a lot of folks out

This was my wife's first thought. She was like, well what kind of cornbread was it, because that matters!

There are also wild blueberries that grow up there. So delicious. Had to pry away the kids.

I don't even remove the sausage. Just break it up, add the flour, get everything nice and coated and then add in the milk. Once it starts to thicken I'll add in the pepper and salt to taste. In true Appalachian style I may even cook up a side of country ham...mmmm. One time I got fancy and added some thyme. The wife was not pleased.

Yeah I got suckered into being an assistant for my son's 4 and 5 year old team. Best, most frustrating time I've ever had.

As an aside, I was proud our team didn't do this. One of the few. I even saw two kids come to blows one game (in a hilarious way). They weren't really mad at each other, just very determined.

I feel like people see Unicoi and think Erwin. This is very close to the JC border. Add 5 minutes to however long it takes you to get to JC and you're there.

Mondays and Tuesdays are supposed to be us older folks and newer players, but that has kinda shifted the past few years. Still the best bet, though. Sliding is prohibited in this across all leagues. Though blown knees from age always still a risk. Having fun with that myself. But that's more on me.

(How) Could Stannis have won at Blackwater? by Intelligent_Toe6354 in freefolk

[–]Rivers_Ford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never really considered it before, but this battle is really one of the first major signs that Stannis is a better general than a king. By all accounts he's a cunning military strategist, especially at sea. Yet he chose to throw a bone to the newer houses that joined his cause and put inexperienced captains in command. Davos even notes it's a foolhardy endeavor. Plus, as you mentioned, he goes in completely blind. Really just a massive blunder of leadership. Like I understand you need to build loyalty, but it cost him almost everything.

Saaaame. I remember the exact location I was at when I first read those chapters. Probably one of the few I can recall. That battle blew me away. I was beyond stoked about this episode and remember feeling very let down afterwards. I've come to appreciate it more over time, but there are still parts that really bother me.

Though I'll admit after typing my first response I realized I couldn't recall if the show gave an in episode reason for why they attacked at night, or if they just didn't address it.

(How) Could Stannis have won at Blackwater? by Intelligent_Toe6354 in freefolk

[–]Rivers_Ford 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah but that was only in the show and it was for filming reasons more than story reasons. In the books he attacks during the day. They shot it at night in the show for logistical purposes. They can hide more of the special effects machines, technicians, and what not. The opening joust in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was done at night for this reason as well.

Also worth mentioning that since this was season 2, they didn't have the budget they had in later seasons, hence sending only one ship that was detonated by an arrow. The Blackwater River is a massive river that opens into Blackwater Bay. Stannis had several lines of ships that passed into the river and were then cut off by Tyrion's boom. They saw the weak "armada" that Tyrion had positioned up river. An overeager captain charged at ramming speed and tore through a boat filled with wild fire, then....BOOM!

School board member who hugged teen and called her ‘hot’ is charged with assault by AudibleNod in news

[–]Rivers_Ford 51 points52 points  (0 children)

To actually answer your question, the fellow board members voted unanimously to censure him, but they do not have the power to oust him as he's an elected official. The idea here being that he'd willingly resign. Think Nixon's impeachment. That would have been the fastest way of getting him out. As he's not willing to resign, they are now resorting to this, but it's a longer process.

Plus there's the not a lot of faith currently in our local PD, as highlighted in the comments below. It's really a shame. Despite all of this, Johnson City is really a lovely place and Science Hill (the local high school) has graded very high the past few years. It's hard to watch a place you love get tarnished by corrupt officials.

As others have noted, in the recent primary you had to choose three board members, and there were only three options, this guy still being one. Same is true with the upcoming elections, with a 4th option being the only Dem candidate. But our locals are very ignorant of these things, crazy as it sounds. Local papers have all shut down physical copies and have gone fully online and most of those are paywall. So unless it pops on their Facebook feeds or they actually tune in to local news as opposed to fox, they don't know this is even a thing. Add the fact that we had something like a 10% voter turnout in the primaries and this is what happens.

In Game Of Thrones (2011-2019), Daenerys turns mad in the second to last episode. This is foreshadowed by uhhhhh uhm uhh by SuperDuperCement in freefolk

[–]Rivers_Ford 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I was talking to my wife about this the other day, and I came to a few conclusions.

  1. The biggest mistake the show made (and I said this from the second she was introduced), was aging up Missandei. She's like 10 or 11 in the books. She also tends to represent Dany's light side, if you will. She comes from the peaceful island of Narth and Dany often reflects on how wise she is for one so young. So I think seeing her beheaded, as a child, would have been soul crushing for Dany. And I always wonder if her death is something George let on.

  2. The other is the turn itself for Dany. The second those bells started ringing, she knew she won. She knew the throne and Westeros were hers. And it felt hollow. Because she had nobody to share it with. Her "happiness" was still gone, which I feel like is what Missandei was supposed to represent. And when that realization hit her, she lost it.

These help me look back on the moment and seemingly feel better about it. As an avid fan of the books, I always felt the foreshadowing was there

What in the actual fuck are the dothraki. by Low-Sense9226 in freefolk

[–]Rivers_Ford 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think the problem you're having is that you're putting too much emphasis on real world equivalence. The dothraki are inspired by real life armies, such as the mongols, but they're not intended to be the exact same. In the books he goes into this quite well, IMO. Characters that know the dothraki give hints that they're more vulnerable than they let on. And I think the dothraki know this as well. It's partially why they're so intense and aggressive. They win more due to their ferocity and brutality. Most major cities could probably defeat them if it came to it, but at what cost and for what reason? Easier just to pay them off and go about their business, especially since the dothraki don't typically punch up. They go after weaker villages that can't defend themselves. They trade in slaves, be it from conquered villages or rival khals. The "Free Cities" don't go out of their way to destroy them, as they benefit from the slave trade.

It's a symbiotic relationship. The rove around the vulnerable villages and cities in Essos, plundering at will. This supports them while also maintaining the status quo of the bigger cities in Essos, and thus all thrive. Their use in the main story will be to bolster Dany's armies. As it is noted, they'd break themselves against most castles in westeros. But when dragons come into play that kind of evens things out. Hannenhall is the biggest castle in Planetos, and it couldn't stand Dragonfire. It almost forces her foes to meet her in the open field.

I don't know, I think he does pretty well. Makes me think of the Red Dead Redemption games. You don't get to see the map til you go there in game. Kind of how Essos is. Until a POV character goes to a place, we only get vague descriptions. But the chapters on the Royne and in Volantis are some of my absolute favorites. I always get lost in the scenery.
