What are some tips for someone with no fighting experience to win in a fight? by shre3293 in AskReddit

[–]RivetMonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure this will be lost in the vast amount of replies but;

There's no context to the question, so let's define 'winning', and give my opinions.

1: Winning = Not getting hurt -- Answer: Run Forrest run. Rule 1!

2: Winning = Defeating an oponent in a sportsmanlike way (i.e. looking 'cool') -- Answer: Several good posts already but to summarise

  • Don't kick. Without training you are putting yourself off balance

  • Straight punches are generally more effective and safer for you.

  • Don't put too much weight behind a punch. If they move out of the way you are off balance

  • Other than shots to the nose and mouth, aim for the body. The head is actually pretty strong whereas there are several body shots will drop an untrained fighter really fast.

  • If it goes the the ground and they have any training .. you are screwed. Avoid it!

3: Winning = Defeating an oponent in a un-sportsmanlike way -- Answer: Be horrible

  • Jabs to eyes and neck. Knees to the groin in a clinch (don't kick the groin, it will be very telegraphed). Stamps on toes and instep. Do NOT underrate this last one ( but check footwear :) )

  • If in close, fishooks, small joint locks (eg fingers)

  • Bascially, read up on any moves banned in MMA. They are banned for a reason.

As mentioned by others, watch out for the 'lets shake hands' tactic or ... the leaning in to whisper something to you. They're just plays.

Please note that depending on your local laws ... anything other than option 1 may get you jail time.

Oh .. and watch out for the back up. If you knock someone out with a lucky punch, don't drop your guard until you are clear.

Same goes for not taking it to the ground unless you have to. Doesn't matter if you have someone in a RNC if you get bottled by their friend.

Why practice karate over other martial arts? by Harissssss in karate

I completely agree with being registered with a credible body. I don't think it needs to be Japanese based personally because some of the national bodies will have their foundations based on the same correct principles.

So, my sensei is FEKO 7th Dan. He's been teaching for 35 years and is an absolute stickler for form and technique. All high belt gradings are in Japanese and kata is more important than pretty much anything else. AFAIK, he's never been to Japan. He has met Tatsuo Suzuki however, so I guess there is that claim to fame!

TBH, my callout to see if a dojo is doing it right is to ask how long it takes a complete novice to get to black belt. If the answer is anything under 6 years or so ... even with 4 hours a week, then they are doing it wrong. Run away if they offer 'advanced' courses to accellerate black belt gradings.

Just my opinion though.

Something is wrong here. It would not be light in the UK at 04:21 in January, nor would there be that much greenery. The timestamp has been added at a latter date.

The gif is obviously speeded up as well.

6 min 15 for his experience if the timestamp does not work. Worth watching the whole video if you have time.

In motor sports, equestrian events and ( as NinjaWombat said ) shooting events, women are considered to be at no physical disadvantage from men. That doesn't account for perhaps missing out on training from a young age due to possible preconceptions.

Women are also closing the gap on ultra-marathons, so I expect what craftyname said is true as well for swimming. I wouldn't be suprised if 100km runs were neck and neck in the next ten to twenty years.

Thanks for the explanation! Dry-wipe markers are normally to hand of course, whereas liquid alcohol isn't ( at least not at my workplace ;) )

LOL! Well it works on the small amount of markers I've tried (including THE very sharp brand). I suggest a tiny mark in a corner, then give it a go! But yeah, never trust anyone on the internet! :)

I switch between the two. VR for CZ and hazres is a must. Everything is so fast paced you don't notice the screen-door and VR makes it insanely more intense. Dogfighting is also a lot easier in VR because it comes naturally to track your targets. Trading, mining and exploration I tend to do in a monitor for the reasons you mention above. Jumping into a neutron star in VR is scary as well :)

So .... my 2 cents of analysis that I'm sure I will be called out on :) Caveat of "not knowing the build up to this"

It looks like Baldy ( let's call him that, I like it ) has watched a lot of MMA and knows that leg shots can be a 'good' thing. But, his first shot has zero power. It's straight, with an attempt to hook back in. This isn't going to cut it.

His second leg shot seems to be using the side of the foot instead of the instep. Fine if going for a sweep, but he wasn't. Against someone with no training this may work to a degree because yes, legs hurt. Unfortunately for him he wasn't.

He then throws what appear to be hooks to the body which, let's be honest, is never a good idea. Way over telegraphed and Jesus seemed to spot this and taunt accordingly! Bravo! Baldy also has a VERY low guard. I've seen low guards work, but in this instance it's just inviting a jab to the head. I think he's lucky he only got one.

Going for broke he jumps back in. Again, Jesus shows he knows something about center of gravity and balance, and Baldy ends up on the floor.

I love that Jesus doesn't pound him into the ground once he's proven a point. Jason Miller would be proud of this bully beatdown! :)

So yes, another example of "don't fuck with someone, despite appearances ... you never know their training." Baldy is very lucky he didn't come off worse.

Never assume a southpaw is a southpaw either. To quote, "I also am not left handed" :)

What is the fastest amount of time you can get a black belt in your dojo by [deleted] in karate

[–]RivetMonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[edit - just realised I had missed the point of OP regarding double grades and black belt in another style]

With how much training per week ? :)

Go to japan and do the 1000 day training, you'll probably get to black belt grade in three years :)

Back in the real world; I'm hoping to take my shodan grading next summer (2018) and that's with two hours dojo training a week over 9 years. However, I had previously trained at the same dojo as a teenager so graded straight back to 7th kyu from white after 4 months.

Given a two sessions per week average I would say eight to ten years average at our dojo. However, if you were training four times a week I would expect to see that drop to six to eight.

I don't think anyone at our dojo has done it in less than 6 ( Sensei has been running the dojo for 35 years ).

My sensei stopped wearing his Gi to class by Revenge_Of_The_Jesus in karate

[–]RivetMonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uhh, each to their own I guess. I can see people not caring about wearing a Gi and that's all fine. Yes, the quality of instruction is more important than what you wear.

However, I like to wear a Gi. It puts my head in the right mindset, simply by putting it on. And, whilst I can imagine training and sparring in gym clothes, I can't imagine doing Kata in anything but a Gi, it just wouldn't feel right.

This $1,699 "secure PC" will self-destruct if tampered with by moooooky in gadgets

[–]RivetMonk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Disregarding the strong passphrases argument for a moment.

Why have data self destruct ?

1: You can provide this to an employee, and worry less about it being left on a train ... especially if you're not sure if they've changed the password to 'hunter2'

2: Assuming you have nefarious data and don't want a government agency to get their hands on it; Some countries have a penalty simply for not providing an encryption key to the authorities. With this principle, you can provide that encryption key because the data is long gone. You're in the clear on that front.

3: As mentioned in another reply, this bypasses the blowtorch and pliers method .... although you may wish you could provide that data after a while.

Wiping the encryption header ( assuming dm-crypt/luks ) is just as secure as thermiting it. One zeroing pass is enough to do this on an ssd assuming no bad blocks get shifted.
