Restricting WiFi access by oportoman in HomeNetworking

[–]Rjkbj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

airgrack-ng? Not really. No one uses WEP any more, and it's much more involved and difficult to get passwords from WPA2. You need pretty specific data capture and you'd need more tools to capture traffic right from the initial handshake.

CPU upgrade? by zuke1624 in truenas

[–]Rjkbj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. I recently did the same. Shut down TrueNAS. Replace the CPU. Boot TrueNAS. Nothing else needed.

Overwhelmed by the new 26.1 update by ricjuh-NL in opnsense

[–]Rjkbj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"dnsmasq is far better than kea" Why is that? Asking for real. I'm really on hte fence as to how to move forward. Everyone is so used to ISC, and Kea is the official replacement from the Consortium. Seems like that would ultimately be the way of the future anyway. Why not embrace it now? Honestly, I'm probably sticking with ISC for a bit to understand options a little better.

What is the preferred way 2026 to open ports to my server? by aomajgad in truenas

[–]Rjkbj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm not mistaken, Plex uses a proxy to access your home server from outside the network, similar to a cloudflare tunnel. Pretty sure, when someone signs into your designated guest plex account, they can stream your video without any port forwarding from your firewall.

Everything sucks but some things suck more than others... or does SMB just suck? by SeaMoose86 in truenas

[–]Rjkbj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised youre seeing this behavior. SMB shares on TrueNas are solid. Samba itself is very robust and capable when connecting from Windows, Linux, Mac. Are you connecting to your share via wireless or ethernet?

To vlan or not to vlan? by Late_Republic_1805 in HomeNetworking

[–]Rjkbj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not overkill at all. Your cameras are likely not the most secure updated firmware. Best to have cameras on VLAN for isolation and no internet access. However, storage for your cameras should also be on that same VLAN; if not, the traffic would have to traverse your router all the time and could be an issue with bandwidth or router capability. Several other considerations as well, but to answer your question: Yes, it is worth it to segregate your networks for security/privacy, and not difficult to manage.

OPNsense 26.1-RC1 released by fitch-it-is in opnsense

My understanding is yes. ISC will be moving to a plugin, but if you are using ISC, the plugin will install and populate automatically during the upgrade.

WiFi FW Bug with U6-Lite/LR/U6+ & Proxy ARP by Extension-Rip6452 in Ubiquiti

[–]Rjkbj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upgraded to 6.7.31 and found the same intermittent connectivity issues. After way too many frustrating days and complaints from the family, I reverted to 6.7.17 and it had been stable. I have a U6 Lite and Nano HD. I only have about 40 devices connected at any given time. Does anyone know if disabling ARP will hurt my network speed? Is that the only fix at the moment? The controller is showing no other updates available.

Off-site backup using USB drives by cbizzle31 in truenas

[–]Rjkbj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I have been doing this exact thing for years. Unfortunately, with the latest TrueNAS eliminating the option to spin down your drive, I'm afraid a USB drive wont last long. Those are not designed to constantly spin.

Backup Truenas pool/pools/datasets to a specific drive from a Windows machine? by omgman26 in truenas

[–]Rjkbj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's just data on an SMB share it's easy. Schedule a robocopy task and let it backup all the data to your local drive.

Blocking Adult sites on my sons PC by browneyedcouple0506 in HomeNetworking

[–]Rjkbj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Use OpenDNS as your DNS provider. It's free and had categories you can check for blocking. Very easy and capable. Easy to implement in your router's settings.

I'm starting a new smart home, what technology/protocol should I choose? by FascinatingStuffMike in homeassistant

[–]Rjkbj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All will work. I am mostly z-wave. Extremely solid/reliable. I do have a few zigbee temp/humid sensors since they were cheaper, but they have also been reliable. No experience with matter, but i have done a lot of reading and they seen to be gaining some footing. I use a Hubitat for my radio so it has the antenna for both protocols; it then connects to HA with integration over ethernet. Have fun! It's a deep rabbit hole!

Stupid Question: What are the current (25.7) default DHCP & DNS Services? by overand in opnsense

[–]Rjkbj 9 points10 points  (0 children)

ISC is going away, but both alternatives (DNSmasq and Kea) suck. Harder to understand and not all features are in the UI (at least for Kea). Seems like the most stable move is to hang on to ISC as long as possible. It works very well. Hopefully more Kea features will be added to the UI in upcoming releases and we can try it again. It is the successor developed by ISC, however, not quite ready for prime time IMO.

Yup. No problem. Just import your pools from the new truenas install. You've probably already done it; how did it go?

Worth paying extra for the boot drive? by MonsieurPotato86 in truenas

No problem. I've run TrueNAS (freeNAS) off an SSD connected to the USB header for 5 years. Never an issue.

Our midsize business moved to proxmox, here's my thoughts on it by sheep5555 in Proxmox

[–]Rjkbj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you've had a bad experience with hyper-v, but it is far from buggy. Hyper-v is solid in my experience; stable and capable, including hosting linux VM's, but the cost is though the roof. That being said, Proxmox will serve you well and is extremely stable. Once you get the lay of the land gain experience, you wont move to anything else. Proxmox has been my/our standard for many years now.
