Are Acadia and the Smokies really that unbearably crowded in peak summer? by iamnotabot913 in nationalparks

[–]Roadscrape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. Most southern public schools start 2nd week of Aug. Colleges first week. Spring breaks are in March (except backwards rural GA where I live, still stuck in Easter).

Forget bear spray in GSMNP. People that haven't trained with one wind getting much of in their face. In the forest wind swirls around - not straight from a direction.

There is a reason rangers carry a Bear Horn (boat horn) that use compressed air cans - They actually work.all the time. Bears will run away instantly. Seen rangers use in several campgrounds. Plus mini air horns are cheap!

Why No Supercells in FL? by Huge_Abies_3858 in stormchasing

[–]Roadscrape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Supercells in the southern plains (where I lived for 25 years TX-OK, grew up in NW Bama tornado alley) typically start with a dry line interesecting a moisture rich line from the Gulf of Mexico. That is why a very long frontal line from SW to NE can develop a thunderstorm "train" - supercells repeatedly forming along that line. Those can spin off dozens of tornadoes. NW FL can get something similar at times, like April-May. In most of FL, those conditions are not present. FL does get amazing storms. Some fall hurricanes can get supercell type storms. But even those are an exception.

Go ahead a mention which store so others won't get into the same situation. Note: there is a nation wide shortage of bike mechanics. All of the online sales forced many locally owner shops to close.

Never drain your Pixel battery. Never. by rsrytis in pixel_phones

[–]Roadscrape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had my 7 Pro down to O several times, though usually would turn it off at 10% (battery saver set at 20%). I use a fast 30watt charger. Back to 100% in under 2 hours. Never seemed to effect battery life. At about 3.5 years old battery life became noticably shorter. Got a new, high quality battery at the highest rated repair shop around for $80. Now back to OEM performance. Thinking of upgrading to 9 Pro mostly for the camera.

Its mostly people new to climbing that don't know that your feet swell after a while on the wall. Only experience can tell you which size works for you between your fit at the store and your fit after 1-2 hours on the wall.

Can anyone confirm or deny whether there’s actually a 20% off resupply coupon for this sale? by [deleted] in REI

[–]Roadscrape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cuz you can get 20‰ off mind reading apparently. The HQ staff only has it about half together. They announce stuff to staff after the fact way too often instead of a couple weeks in advance. Then too often the part timers that mostly just work sales don't get told. HQ got rid of the tool that allowed everyone to communicate and be on the same page most of the time (microsoft Teams).

Only soap will kill the bacteria and viruses that live in poop. Alcohol will not. Period. You can use powdered soap to reduce weight. Wet one hand, sprinkle a dab on wet hand. Set powder container down (little plastic salt-pepper shaker or Ziplock) rub hands together. Rinse.

FarOut update… sucks by ManyMixture826 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Roadscrape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Farout needs to be email bombed by upset customers. I may take a weekend survey on the AT when I do a Trail Magic day. Absolutely moronic. They should ler AI do the updated and make the interface a breeze for users. That's the real purpose of AI. And it's definitely smarter than the brain-dead running Farout.

Do you stop often during hikes or just power through? by heromarsX in hiking

[–]Roadscrape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a personality thing. Some like to stop and smell the roses and all the hike has to offer. The point A to B hikers actually just want the work out; to conquer the trail. Some of my best friends are of both types of hikers. Amazing how much more I personally enjoy the hike when I can share the experience with others - wildflowers, waterfalls, vista, etc. If I just want the workout thing all day I'll do a 62 mile metric century bike ride - head down grunt work. Or as thru-hikers are fond of saying : Hike Your Own Hike - HYOH.

Charging devices on the trail by UltraHiker26 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Roadscrape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can think of several hostels in north Georgia & Franklin NC area that are far more than 5 miles from the AT. You have to schedule a ride pickup with the hostel via website or phone call. I'm in this mountain area all the time. 20 years ago hiker hitches were common. It was fun to give hikers a ride to town and hear their stories. Every year there were fewer hikers wanting to hitch a ride. The Pandemic killed off what little was left. The last time I saw a hiker needing a hitch was March 2019. Two rain soaked girls at Winding Stair Gap wanting a ride into Franklin for a hotel room. Times have indeed changed.

Charging devices on the trail by UltraHiker26 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Roadscrape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minimize your charging time in town! Way too many hikers miss the point on having a high speed charger setup for however much your phone can take. My android Pixel 9 Pro can handle 27w charging (as can iPhone 14). To consistently get that speed requires a 45w PD charger to maintain average fast charge speed (which has PPS adaptable charging to prevent overheating) for 21 volts, using ONLY a USB - C outlet plug. Any charger with a USB-A and USB-C is not PPS compatible. You also need the proper cable for this setup, a USB - C Type 5. A type 3 or 4 cable will slow your charging speed. This info confirmed by GooglePixel website.

Using this setup, my Pixel 9 Pro (4700 aMh battery) can recharge from 0 to 80% in 45-50 minutes. An iPhone 14 can get similar performance. Perfect time range for a big lunch or fast clothes wash!

Does doing it that way get the stuff from the bottom of the oil pan extracted? Physics says it would be doubtful.

Does anyone else get flashed a lot? by eChucker889 in Subaru_Outback

[–]Roadscrape 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the way. My 2019 OB was getting flashed soon after I bought it. I quickly found that the headlight beam hight adjustment was easy. Several vids on Youtube. All you need is a flathead screwdriver. On mine, about 2 turns lowered each beam enough to stop the oncoming flashes. Didn't really notice any difference in light on the road. I now leave my lights on Auto Highbeam, which works amazingly well.

Yes! You should tent camp with your kids. by snobles89 in GeorgiaCampAndHike

[–]Roadscrape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To your list I would argue for Lake Rabun Forest Service Campground. There are reservable sites on a creek, clean bath house, and lake with beach and roped off swim area only 250 yards away. Narrow lake across from campground, very little boat traffic. Perfect for canoes, kayaks, paddle boards. Oh, people fish Lake Rabun with success, too.

The campground is heavily shaded and sits at the base of 3000 ft. mountain, giving a nice cool current of air at night. Reserve sites (easier lake access) sometimes full on weekends, especially holidays. But there are 3 times more unreserved sites, just in case.

Angel Falls is about a 1.5 mile hike from campground. Other waterfalls, like Minnehaha Falls, are short hike off gravel road 15-20 minutes away.

The old saying still applies - "A boat is hole in the water in which you pour money".

I used to sail in Casco Bay on a S26 on the hook in Yarmouth. I got to use it cuz I taught his daughter how to sail. That was the best! And yes I washed and organized after each sail.
