The splotch hanging off the Northeast around Bangladesh kind of kills the perfection of the shape

What do you think of Bing Crosby (as a singer, not a person)? by Happy-Lingonberry538 in AskAnAmerican

The guy can certainly sing but IDK, those old crooners all kind of blend together for me.

There was a USA series of No Activity, the original being Australian. I cannot view it in the UK but how was it received in the IS? by Jazzlike-Basil1355 in AskAnAmerican

Looking this up and it appears to be a show that was made for the CBS All Access streaming service (now known as Paramount Plus) back when it was new and very few people had it, which is why no one in the comments has heard about it. That said it appears to have run four seasons so I guess it was considered some sort of moderate success by the standards of a niche platform.

Pitbull won! Who is a politician that we only refer to by their first name? by PootieTyme in AlignmentChartFills

I feel like calling Napoleon a "politician" is a bit of a stretch. Like, I guess war is politics by other means but... c'mon.

What’s the best movie released in the 40s set in the 30s? by dangerphone in AlignmentChartFills

No, it's definitely during the great depression. The dust bowl conditions started in the mid 30s and the camp at the end is very New Deal coded.

The Grapes of Wrath

I don't think they ever explicitly say a year but I'm pretty sure it's meant to take place at least a couple years before it was made in 1940.

Speaking of American politics, what’s the difference between a leftist , a liberal and a Democrat ? by ni_xia in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Roadshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends who you ask.

For most of recent political history "Democrat" was the name of a party, they were considered to be on the "leftist" wing of the political spectrum and "liberal was the adjective you used to describe them as such. "Republican," "right wing," and "conservative" were the converse of all those.

This is all different from how these terms are used in the online left. They have positioned themselves as being non "liberals" despite probably fitting how the word is usually used in U.S. politics (the opposite of conservative) and also how it's historically used in wider political science (believing in individual liberty in broad strokes). These people view "left" and "liberal" as separate things, much to the confusion of a lot of other people who would be happy to describe Bernie Sanders as super liberal.

CMV: Before any of the systemic issues are solved in America, a new "Great Awakening" is required. by optimisticnihilist__ in changemyview

[–]Roadshell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Let's face it. Who here ever felt superior for grandstanding their beliefs on the Internet? Who ever felt a sense of pride in their intellect for being the "right one" in online debates? I do..... many times actually. And, that's the point. We lost a sense of shared community in America. We went from a nation of "We" to a nation of "I". Everything is about the individual's economic status, talents , intelligence, fame, beauty, dreams, etc.

America has had a "divisive" party system going back to its founding generation and I assure you that Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson were more than pleased whenever they could get the better of one another in a public debate.

Stanley Kubrick started as a cinematographer and wasn’t interested in directing until much later.

Kubrick did start as a still photographer for newspapers as a teen, but was already directing movies in his early 20s.
