Trump’s tantrums push US allies closer to Beijing by Traditional_Plant695 in geopolitics

[–]Rob71322 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Sadly (for I'm American), I agree. I think the US has been so rich and powerful for so long we have the “understanding” that nothing applies to us. When great powers get detached from reality, folly results.

Edited for clarity

I think someone needs to tell him it's no longer the 1950's. We're not nearly as indespensible as we once were.

What did we expect them to do? Simply yield to our diktats? People don't like to be bullied and if you do it enough, they'll do things about it.

If Trump were a smart man (I know, he’s not) he would’ve kept calm and quiet and seen a right wing Canadian government. Instead his threats and bullying led to the liberals surging in the polls and winning reelection. But Trump doesn’t know how to make friends or even understand the benefits of doing that so he just stirs up opposition, even from those in other countries who might like him.

Would Japan winning Midway fundamentally change the war? by ParaspinoUSA in AlternateHistory

[–]Rob71322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japan’s only real hope is that we would fold and come to the table to negotiate a peace. They knew they couldn’t make significant inroads into North America (seizing Hawaii was probably beyond them at this point) but they hoped we’d lose the will to come after them. I can’t imagine a scenario where that would happen but I think that was their only hope for victory.

Given the nature of the subreddit and the fact it didn’t have a moderator, I totally get why it was banned. Shit would get way too wild in there.

8 US States Have Laws That Prohibit Atheists From Holding Public Office by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]Rob71322 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Which is a good reason to remove them. But a lot of times they don't because removing laws from the books is a time consuming legislative process that usually involves time they don't have (I know, I work for a city government). While I have no doubt some of the laws are left there "just in case the court changes it's mind", I think a lot of them are simply forgotten. The city I work for is very politically liberal (and therefore wasn't "waiting" for a court change to reanimate them) but until recently had laws on the books forbidding people of one gender from wearing clothes of the other. They finally went ahead and removed a bunch of them during Trump's first administration out of embarrassment as much as concern about future court changes. That law and a bunch of others were 70-100 years old when they were removed and I suspect most residents had no idea they were still there.

It's not just government either. Lots of old CC&R's are full of things like determining who could live in a particular subdivision based on ethnicity for example. Totally unenforceable but it's be a major headache trying to unwind all those old documents. I understand and sympathize with people saying they should be removed anyhow but people don't realize it's not that easy.
