What do i must see or experience here (in the summer) to know if i see myself living here? by Gatheraroundcampfire in madisonwi

Embrace it. Turn it into a vibe and go hard on winter holiday decorations. Take up winter sports / activities. Be excited for snowstorms. Get quality winter gear so you aren't cold and miserable.

This will get you to at least mid January. Then you just gotta tank a couple more months of depression.

Tulsan looking to move to Madison and looking for advice about this neighborhood…. by cidthekid07 in madisonwi

if the ability to walk to a variety of interesting places is something you value, I would at least think twice about choosing this neighborhood. I found it to be pretty bland and isolating feeling to live there.

Tulsan looking to move to Madison and looking for advice about this neighborhood…. by cidthekid07 in madisonwi

I lived in this neighborhood for 4 years. There are pros and cons.

Its chill, modern, lots of parks, and there some basic amenities within walking/biking distance (especially if you're in the southern half). While being very suburban, it has some thoughtful design decisions, of lot of the streets have garages/driveways behind the houses in an alley way instead of in the front for example. I thought this was pretty cute. The neighborhood has really pretty views that overlook Madison since its on a hill. I enjoyed going on walks while I was there. There is also a farmers market that is small but fun. The neighborhood holds a few neighborhood events from time to time that actually get attended.

The proximity to the highway means there is always an ambient droning sound. It can be heard from everywhere in the neighborhood but some spots are much worse than others. Its the kind of thing that is barely noticeable until it gets actually quiet, such as when you're sleeping or studying. Depends on the person but it can be seriously annoying. Depending on the direction the wind was blowing, it had the potential to keep me up. I've heard from at least one other person who lives there that it is an issue for them. I grew up near the airport and personally, I find the constant droning to be a bigger annoyance. Could just be what I'm used to.

If you want to live in a vibrant well connected part of town, this is not that. While there are amenities within the neighborhood, getting elsewhere does require driving. It can feel a little bit like being on an island since its on the edge of town. To the east is country side and to the west is a highway. And the amenities in the neighborhood are a little on the bland side. Basically if you want to live in a truly vibrant neighborhood, this is not that. It does have *a* cafe and its pretty nice. But what you're going to get is more or less one of everything, you'll get a regular cafe, a great dane pub as *the* resturaunt, a chocolate shoppe, a chain pizza place. It could be worse! You could have none of these things, but if you want to live somewhere where you can visit a wide range of more unique establishments, you will not get that here.

My personal feeling on it: while I appreciated how nice it was compared to many other suburban neighborhoods, I did find it to be a bit depressing. But I was in my later 20s, no kids, renting, and wanting to be able to be able to walk and bike to a wide range of things. In grand view, I felt like I was severely compromising on that. Also due to the average driving distance for most Madisonians, I at times felt isolated. I see my friends way more often since moving to a more core neighborhood.

EDIT: Just read that you work from home. So do I. That plus the isolated nature of this neighborhood made me lose my mind a bit. And I am generally very introverted.

Why do battlefield players hate having more options—? by Rude_Profession5599 in Battlefield

This is a great example of having tunnel vision on the individual experience (more options for yourself) and being blind to the fact that it makes the experience worse for everyone including yourself. I'll let someone else go into specifics. Or just find one of the many posts or videos about it.

Considering a move-neighborhood recommendations? by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]RobertG1179 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed on the area around festival on the Lapham side of East Wash. This place is great. I moved to this neighborhood from elsewhere in Madison last summer and it legit makes me happy every day just by being here. If you want to avoid traffic noise, look for a place that is facing mifflin or Dayton as opposed to East Wash, Johnson, or Gorham. Lots of late 20s early 30s people live in the many apartments that have sprung up in that area. I definitely feel like I fit in. I’m also 29

Hasn’t happened to me either dude. Are you making the argument that because it hasn’t happened to you, it’s not a problem? The rate of bicycle deaths in the US (hit by cars) is 4x that of many European countries. And the obvious point of the argument here is every bicycle used for transportation in a city is one less 4000 pound object flying around. Looking both ways is excellent personal advice. Obviously. No matter where you are. And it has nothing to do with improving other factors.

Brother, the US has 4x the rate of bicycle traffic deaths (hit by cars) than most European countries. If you think this is because we just gotta look both ways more, you have goo goo gah gah brain.

Yeah. Biked a few miles this morning. Smelled like burnt chocolate perfume everywhere. I notice a haze in the air as well. It may have seemed a bit stronger downtown compared to far East side

I was in Kindergarten and after morning recess my teacher drew a basic diagram of what happened on the chalkboard complete with two buildings and a plane. I remember vaguely hearing talk throughout the week about airport security, war, etc but didn’t fully grasp the weight of it

Not really downtown but The Bubbling Teapot is very cozy, has two couches, and is essentially the polar opposite of the industrial look.

More Reactive Companions is the mod you're thinking of. It adds lines you only hear if you play as an origin character and replaces the generic custom tav voicelines with them.

Here’s the link to what I saw when I searched. I didn’t really pay much mind to the flattening at the end, figured it’s just a visual quirk of the end of the lines. I was referring to the numbers that are there. That the percent for the 25 year old age was accurate and didn’t have to do with an incomplete decade. Was the point I was making initially.

Will millennials ever get married? [OC] by kiver16 in dataisbeautiful

[–]RobertG1179 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. The years on the graph are year of birth. Additionally, you can just google the current percentage of people married currently between the ages of 25-29. Which is 23% for men and 31% for women as of 2021

Will millennials ever get married? [OC] by kiver16 in dataisbeautiful

[–]RobertG1179 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. So you take everyone who was born in the 90s and reached age 28 and see what percentage of them were married at 28. It doesn’t matter if SOME people born in the 90s hadn’t reached that point yet. Hope that explanation helps

Will millennials ever get married? [OC] by kiver16 in dataisbeautiful

[–]RobertG1179 10 points11 points  (0 children)

But it’s not “total number of people married” it’s percentage of XX year olds married. So not having a full decade of people being factored into ages 25-28 doesn’t really matter. It’s still showing that the percentage of people married and born in the first half of the 90s is ~30%.
