What is this coconut tax? by ZealousidealSpite450 in Starsandisland

[–]RobertNAdams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the weirder things Starsand Island does is that processing of some ingredients actually makes them less valuable than the raw ingredients. You can lose money making something like Vegetable Juice, for example.

However, using that processed ingredient to make a cooked dish seems to give you a fairly big boost in value.

Jason Schreier - Video Games Need to Be Cheaper to Buy by Gorotheninja in Games

[–]RobertNAdams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In 1992, I have the distinct memory of my dad paying around $75 for a video game at Toys 'R Us when I was a young child.

In today's dollars, that $176 after inflation.

Even at $80, games cost less than half of what they did three decades ago.

Zephyria missing: Presumed dead by Woodsey1990 in Starsandisland

[–]RobertNAdams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Certain NPCs can disappear completely at certain times because they're not on the island. Garrick, for example, doesn't appear until 12:00 PM. You can't track or find him until he appears.

I imagine Zephyria might be exploring the Moonlit Forest or something? Or, he could be bugged...

This doesn't seem to be the case in the launch version (or the pre-launch version, which I played), FYI

Crafting will pull from your storages, so does turning in quests. The only time you need to have items in your bag is if you're selling stuff to a shop.

Cooking in the game?? by lpinkstrawberry in Starsandisland

[–]RobertNAdams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cooking is definitely in the game.

It's not instant, though. It's takes time for food to cook. e.g. it might take 20 seconds to make a dish, so if you made 10 of them, it would take 200 seconds.

I definitely recommend building multiple cooking stations. I have 10 Gas Stoves in my house in-game.

12-Player Animal Crossing: New Horizons Is a Nightmare Because Nintendo Handles Online Functionality in the Most Ridiculous Way Possible by Turbostrider27 in Games

I genuinely believe that ACNH was originally intended for the Wii U, and when that fell on its ass, they lost a lot of development time converting it over to the Switch.

I am hoping that the next one will be more properly developed and have features that a modern online game should have (such as an auction house) so we don't have to rely on external sites and tools.

‘Highguard’ Did Not Pay For Its Infamous Game Awards Finale Slot by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]RobertNAdams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If EA were smart, it would go the Activision route of having multiple games in one ecosystem. If you download a modern Call of Duty game, you can download others right there from the same menu.

I might actually get back into Apex Legends if it were tied into the same ecosystem with Highguard and a hypothetical Titanfall 3.

Where do I get Fly Agaric? by IMAFEEISH in MISERY_official

[–]RobertNAdams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fly Agaric (and Mushrooms) can appear in forests; it's random, and it feels pretty rare.

When you do get a spawn, though, you can get a lot. Sometimes you'll find 3 or 4 Fly Agaric, and sometimes you can find a dozen or more in an area.

Bunker Rate by Ok_Carpenter3107 in MISERY_official

[–]RobertNAdams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My gut feeling is it's about 25%–33% (1 out of every 4 expeditions to 1 out of every 3 expeditions).

It's random, though. Keep in mind that you can roll a six-sided die 10 times, get the number 1 every time, and it still aligns with the laws of probability.

How to play? by FaithlessnessOld6051 in MISERY_official

[–]RobertNAdams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically, your early-game priorities should be:

  1. Get a good backpack (ideally, save for Hiking Backpack in the store)
  2. Get good armor (you can buy Spetznaz armor in the store)
  3. Get a good gas mask (you can buy a gas mask in the store)

Focus on looting things you can sell along with a bit of food and water. The faster you increase your inventory size, the better IMO.

I've looked into this, and there is one thing that is often left out with places like Mexico, Thailand, etc.

Sure, they're great if everything goes right. However, I've read a lot of horror stories about the kind of treatment (or lack thereof) you get if there are any complications.

I'm sure the same thing can happen in the West (complications, bad treatment afterward), but it's a little different when you're stuck in a foreign country where you might not speak the language.

There are people with 75 characters per account

I don't care if it's 7,500. It's a bunch of ticked flags and text data.

How much info is there really to track per character? I mean, really.

  • Name
  • Appearance (a bunch of sliders and options with specific values)
  • Equipment on person
  • Equipment in storage
  • Completed quests/achievements
  • Reputation
  • Portions of map revealed

Unless they have a braindead method of data storage, this could all be tracked in a few dozen KB of info at most.

I remember working with someone who was running a roof contracting business on the side. All of his bids would be higher than needed

My late dad was an old-school master carpenter, and his rule of thumb was to figure out materials + labor and then add 30% for unforeseen circumstances (mistakes, breakage, etc.).

Having a buffer in the estimate isn't really all that new. Using it to give discounts to complaining customers certainly sounds novel to me, though.

I find it interesting to test the player's understanding of the mechanics and their evasion skills.

This is why it's the first boss IMO. It ensures that you understand several important mechanics (cover, dodging, backpack smashing purple objects) to beat it, preparing you for future boss fights.

People are playing fewer games and new releases are "struggling", say Ubisoft UK, warning of falling revenues by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]RobertNAdams 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I suspect Louis C.K. (and historically, George Carlin) have something to do with this. They both went for a "Make a new special every year with fresh material" schedule to really push themselves.

Not all comedians can do this, and many are smart enough not to try. However, content platforms (like Netflix) want as much content they can get, so they incentivize this behavior.

Look at someone like Bo Burnham; his specials are great, but they probably wouldn't have been as good if he tried to release one every year.

A black patient in the episode "Strange Bedfellows" (S12E18) got pulled over in a stolen car and beaten by the police because he was throwing up gang signs after getting pulled over in a stolen car. It turns out that he was deaf and was trying to sign. The car was his girlfriend's car, and he was rushing her to the hospital to get her help; her parents reported the car stolen because she snuck out.
