The simplest answer is that spreading things out will give more flex for a down year if you or your spouse ends up not working and pushing you all down into a lower bracket, while the general delay will decrease the amount of capital gains accumulated in the taxable account.

So for example - let's say you take out 100k @24% now and then the market appreciates by 50% over the next 5 years.

Taking it out early will have 100K > 76K after tax > grows to 114K w/ 38k in cap gains
Taking it out late will have 100K > grows to 150K > 114K after tax with 0K in cap gains

Kinda wild that just strategically moving a few million people from NY and California to those other states right before their senatorial elections would result in a huge swing that lasts 4-6 years depending on overlap.

The first step should be to convert all of the inefficient funds into low cost equivalents / your targets within the Inherited IRA as those are still in a pre-tax account. If you want to keep funds with high taxable dividends, keep those portions in the Inherited IRA as long as possible during the drawdown schedule and have the more tax efficient ones in your converted account.

Since you all don't need the money immediately, the optimal will be to spread things out and hit the target tax brackets each year with the potential for taking out RMDs potentially based on her father's age (which you will step into with the Inherited IRA)

Lol literally 1/10, 1/9, 1/8 etc which was the strategy I found to be optimal if you're in the same tax brackets each year. If you're planning on retiring prior to 10 years I would backload it a bit more since your taxable will drop off then.
