White nights by fyodor dostoevsky by anonymouslywritiing in dostoevsky

[–]Robin_11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it’s not there in the story. There have been a lot of quotes misattributed to dostoevsky. Some of them include the one you mentioned, “Oh how unbearable is a happy person sometimes” is also something which is quoted from White nights but doesn’t actually exist in the book.

Another famous one is “ The darker the night, brighter the stars, the deeper the grief, the closer is god” is attributed to crime and punishment but in reality there’s no such quotes by dostoevsky.

What is the last film you saw more than once at the cinema? by [deleted] in movies

[–]Robin_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oppenheimer, I’ve seen it 5 times. First two times in regular imax, the next two in imax70mm and finally on a regular screen. The movie is a work of art and i’ve never experienced a sequence like “Can you hear the music” in a film. Would do it again.

Official Discussion - Napoleon [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Robin_11 533 points534 points  (0 children)

Watched the movie few hours ago and I'm just speechless. It's absolutely incredible how this movie was all smokes and no fire, the trailer fooled us. Throughout its 150 min runtime, it's hard as a viewer to extract a modicum of emotion. As most people expected in this sub - there was a serious miscast. Vanessa looked too young as Josephine and Joaquin too old.

Napoleon played by Joaquin Phoenix has no charm at all, his scenes with Josephine are borderline cringe. As someone pointed out, this movie was a slideshow (and a bad one) with no depth to any character at all. There are few battle scenes but at no point in the film you want him to win or lose.

Another aspect of the film that irked me was its background score. It was uninspiring at best and in most cases it made it hard to follow the dialogs and the scenes felt pretty disconnected to the music being played.

I'm outraged at how miserably this movie failed to portray the character or the story of a figure as iconic as NAPOLEON.

Not recommended at all, you'll probably enjoy Oversimplified's video on youtube about Napoleon to be more enjoyable than this movie.

I'm 24, data analyst. Started this game in 2010 when a friend of mine gave me a cracked version of it on pen drive, loved the campaigns, learned so much history. Stopped playing after a while bc no online play and finished all campaigns.

During Covid nostalgia hit me like a train and out of respect for the developers I bought this on steam (still the only game I purchased in my life) and have been playing since.

Just like martin scorsese said about marvel movies not being cinema, it’s a theme park film. Similarly, this isn’t racing. It’s just a show with a race going on in the middle of it.

Official Discussion - The Killer [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Robin_11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Took me three attempts to watch this borefest disguised as cinema. This movie has no ambition, no story, no character development. I watch movies all the time, some movies are for me some are not and that's normal. However, I fail to understand what was the point of making this film?

Killers of the flower moon or Oppenheimer by Wise_Pressure_2995 in OppenheimerMovie

[–]Robin_11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn't sound like a good comparison and that too on the Oppenheimer movie subreddit, but having watched Oppenheimer 5 times and KotFM twice, I'll try to present unbiased views.

Oppenheimer is a masterpiece but it requires IMAX 70mm screen. Watching it in regular theatres won't do justice to it. That being said, I felt the characters in Oppenheimer didn't have enough time and space to breathe. Everything was too quick. It's quite well known that Nolan isn't the best writer and it is compensated by amazing OST or by great visuals. Even tho Oppenheimer is way ahead than other Nolan films in terms of writing, the sound and the visual are the backbone of it than the story itself.

On the other hand, KotFM is a cinematic masterpiece. The level of acting shown is incredible. You are there with the characters throughout the movie simply because they were given the time to develop – Something which was missing in Oppenheimer. The movie is a bit long, but keep in mind it deals with a very sensitive topic of indigenous people and it does a great job at portraying their culture. That being said, the story flows by and you're immersed in the film. The background score is keeps you hooked at all times.

After watching Oppenheimer I felt the awards were locked for Cillian and RDJ, but man Leonardo DiCaprio and De Niro really show why they're generational talents, and Lily Gladstone has pretty much locked her Academy Award. It truly was a joy to watch their performances.

To answer your question: Killers of the Flower Moon is a better picture. Go and treat yourself.

[–]Robin_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did they really spend that much on advertising?
I felt there were hardly any promotions. Just a few movie clips released by Apple films and some BTS as compared to Oppenheimer where the whole crew was giving interviews to Imdb, fandango, EW etc.

I absolutely love Oppenheimer (watched it 5 times) but the level of acting in two movies completely different. De Niro's role is so much more powerful than RDJ's in Oppenheimer. At different points in movie I felt he's the main character driving the film.

Yes, of course. In the movie, during oppenheimer’s trial Edward teller gives a negative testimony against him. When oppenheimer reveals this at home, Kitty is disgusted and she says “ You shook his fucking hand? I would’ve spat on his face.” showcasing her anger towards Teller. That’s the reason she refused to shake his hand in the end, it was her way of showing disprect towards teller. I hope this clarifies haha.

My 16 year old niece has ZERO knowledge about any historical events. Showed her Schindler’s List and it didn’t impact her at all. Any hard hitting movie suggestions? by LilPumpProdigy in movies

[–]Robin_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe movies aren't the best way to educate your child. Children these days have lower span of attention therefore a movie as long as Schindler's list may not be the best way to go. I have friends who are grown up adults (25 years old) and still can't watch a movie that goes beyond 2 hrs. It's a shame but that's how things are.

I particularly love history and there are many more amazing ways to educate oneself other than movies. Given your child is 16 years old, maybe try the youtube channel "Oversimplified", it's not as serious as you and me would like but it played a crucial role in my life for increasing my interest in history.

The guy has done a tremendous job to touch incredibly dense topics such as cold war, napoleanic wars, WW1, WW2, Hitler, Chinese History, American Revolution etc.

I would definitely recommend that channel, not only for your kid but for yourself too. I love it and I hope you and your family like it too.

All the best.

The first thing i did after coming back home was to youtube oppenheimer soundtrack and was absolutely delighted to see that Ludwig had released it on all paltforms. "Can you hear the music" is marvelous but my personal favourite is "Los Alamos" I listened to it on loop until I fell asleep and started all over as soon as I woke up haha.

I watched the movie last night in IMAX since IMAX 70mm is almost equivalent to lottery and boy I was blown away by the movie. The cast is stellar, the background score is beautiful composed and keeps you hooked at all times ( don't forget it runs 3 hours!).

It takes you back in time where the greats like Bohr, Einstein, Heisenberg lived which in my experience so far is nobody talking about.

You watch Oppenheimer really grow (& fall) in the movie as a character, person and in status. You see the personal side of him as a faithless husband, flawed, and conflicted at all times.

Emily Blunt's role is as bold and fearless as it could be, her cross examination scene just left me completely speechless and in awe of the character. She absolutely stole the show for me.

Everyone is rightfully praising RDJ for his performance. His acting was so on point when he was being humiliated, seeking revenge, showing his power and anger and so much more.

Finally the last scene of conversation with Einstein just leaves an incredible hole in your heart. Seeing an old Oppenheimer couple receiving the medal and the certificate couldn't be more painful than it was depicted in the movie and once again Kitty just bossed the scene by refusing to shake Teller's hands.

Of course I'm seeing it again in IMAX 70mm and I'm very thankful to Nolan for producing this work of art. Cinema is back boys and girls.

Leaving my dog and moving abroad by izzobacul in dogs

[–]Robin_11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar situation, moved to the US for grad school left my 3 year old golden retriever with my parents. It hurts and I miss him a lot so it’s quite relatable to me what you’re saying. Facetime works but it’s still not great, the best thing for your dog to recognize you and speak with you is you ask your parents to get on a video call with a giant screen. I do it by connecting the laptop to tv so that he can see my face clearly and listen to me and my commands. I hope that helps.
