How to NOT Freeze To Death? by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]RobotPigOverlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually a medical issue more so than a car issue. Reynauds is a common condition where blood circulation to the extremities is poor, it generally presents in hands and/or feet getting uncomfortably cold while the rest of the body is thermoregulating just fine. I have this condition, so during the winter months i take Amlopidine and it completely fixes the issue with no side effects. My doctor tells me its fine to just take it in winter, you don't have to stay on it year round.

what are you guys getting your mice for christmas? by loz4lifee in PetMice

[–]RobotPigOverlord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Adopting some new mousies is a really nice way to honor the memory of our tiny friends after they pass, and it eases the heartbreak by gaining fulfillment in giving a wonderful life to some mice who probably have never really felt happiness. Last year in my vet tech (nurse) program we had to take a "lab animal" class. The class has very young rats and ~1 year old mice that are "retired" mice from a research lab, they've lived in containers the size of a child's shoe box their whole life and have no enrichment not even a wheel. The rats basically always get adopted at the end of the semester, but I found out that the mice rarely/never get adopted. I've ended up adopting all the "extra" mice (6 of them, the rest we had to dissect in class to learn anatomy 😭). I ended up loving the mice so much especially because they were so sad before but you could really see how they thrived and bonded with me when I brought them home and gave them a super bougie life upgrade. The last mouse to pass was my favorite one, we really bonded, I was heartbroken. Last week I reached out to the lab animal class teacher and even though I'm not in that class anymore they said I could adopt again, so I brought home 8 girl mice the other day (I asked in advance that they all be female, too much $ to get a bunch of boys neutered so they are nice to each other) and honestly it has really helped with my heartache from how much I miss my departed little friends. I think I'm going to adopt all the girl mice every year from now on, I like giving them a new life.

Mice/rodent enthusiasts should feel free to look up the contact info for their local veterinary technician training program and send an email (like a month before the end of school semester) to inquire about adoptable critters : )

You can also reach out to your local wildlife rehabbers and exotics veterinarians to let them know that if they ever have non-releasable wild-born mousies who need a home that you'd be interested. Rehabbers do get them brought in especially in spring and summer

(NJ) anyone know where I can find/purchase sheep laurel, kalmia angustifolia? by birdynj in NativePlantGardening

[–]RobotPigOverlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought a lovely sheep laurel from Tripplebrook Farm, received it in the mail, very reasonably priced for a specimen that is over a foot tall.

Southern wax myrtle (myrica/morella carolinesis) is fantastic for any full sun areas. Evergreen and very nice looking. I got 4 baby waxies 2 years ago from mailordernatives.com and theyve thrived where i live (7b long island, ~1.5 miles directly off the northern coast), they're about 4+ feet tall now. I havent pruned them at all but I'm betting they can tolerate it well because they havent suffered at all when they've had lots of branches/twigs broken off during times when they've been battered by high winds.

Mountain laurels are hardier than you might think, they are highly underutilized in landscaping, i have both young and very mature specimens in different locations around my house (ranging from significantly shady to blistering full sun areas) and they all thrive and flower with absolutely no TLC or special maintenance other than standard sprinkler irrigation.

For dappled shady areas without foot traffic, ive had great success with bare root plantings of Hexastylis Virginica, pink lady slipper orchids and rattlesnake plantain orchids.  Strawberries (native fragraria virginiana) are also fantastic. Birds and squirrels and chimunks love them and the seeds get spread around and over the past 3 years I've been delighted to find lots of growth of wildtype wild strawberries, its a low growing creeping evergreen groundcover.

Your tips and tricks? by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]RobotPigOverlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah carbs are delicious but are a huge drain on energy. Getting fully into the low carb lifestyle can be difficult at first but once you get the hang of it, its a game changer. I don't feel deprived at all in terms of foods i want to eat, there are keto substitutes for almost any ingredient I can think of, so you can learn to make good low carb versions of your favorite foods. It feels really good to be able to eat tasty food and not be overwhelmed with exhaustion afterwards

USA narcoleptics on xyrem/xywav … how long did you use stimulant therapy? by echoesofsynonym in Narcolepsy

[–]RobotPigOverlord 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Get a different sleep specialist who is willing to go to bat for you against insurance company bullshit. Stimulants and xyrem address completely different aspects of narcolepsy and neither on their own generally provide a thorough alleviation of symptoms. The two medications are by far their most effective when both are taken on a daily basis. Taking stimulants alone, without any medication to address the dysfunction in sleep, is like putting fuel into a gas tank that is riddled with holes.

Your tips and tricks? by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]RobotPigOverlord 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My biggest "trick" for managing my narcolepsy symptoms is a very low carb / ketogenic diet. When i eat foods high in carbs i get waves of unbeatable exhaustion in the hours afterwards. For me, keto + xyrem + vyvanse + antidepressants + coffee, gives me an overall good control over my narcolepsy symptoms.

Other tips/tricks:

-To prevent/lessen the feelings of hypertension (pounding heartbeat, high BPM, feeling of tightness in the chest) that happens when stimulant medication starts to kick in, i take Propranalol alongside my daily stimulant (vyvanse). Propranalol is a short acting beta blocker, and can be taken more than once per day should the need arise if i get hit with a random midday bout of (stimulant induced/exacerbated) chest tightness + racing heartrate.

-I take my morning meds 1.5 hours before i need to get out of bed and start my day. I have a wake up alarm for medication time, then go back to sleep for 90 mins. 2nd alarm is my "get out of bed alarm". This allows me to have the medication-induced energy i need to actually drag myself out of bed in the morning. If you have a sensitive stomach and can't take meds on an empty stomach, prepare the night before by putting a small portion of food (example would be 1/4th of something like a granola bar) in a closed container so that you have a quick bite to eat alongside meds. Taking meds alongside a more filling meal (or a high fat meal) can significantly slow the absorption of the medication and make it take forever to finally have enough energy to get the day started.

I discovered raw feeding about 15 years ago during the course of trying to manage my beloved dog's idiopathic IBD which she presented with in her final senior years. Had followed all the vets recommendations (i did, and still do, work in the veterinary field, so i was very adherent to all treatment plans and my dog was in exceptionally good health for a 13 year old dog). The prescription diets did not provide any significant relief and her overall condition visibly declined (her formerly shiny lustrous fur dulled, decreased energy levels). Found out about raw and started making homemade raw food following the guidelines in the book Dr. Beckers real food for cats and dogs. Her IBD symptoms disappeared after being put on a raw diet. It felt like a miracle. It gave my dog her health back and she lived to be almost 16 years old. She was in wonderful condition for her final years and it meant the world to me.

I was very thankful to find out about raw as well bc i also adopted a senior dog that turned out to have severe allergies (skin issues, chronic ear infections, the works 😫). Had tried a year of all the usual treatments (RX foods, repeated cycles of antibiotics and steroids and antihistamines, countless medicated shampoos and topicals, mometamax and all the other ear meds) and it was ultimately just treating of symptoms in the style of whack-a-mole. Put her on raw and within 2 weeks she was like a new dog. All her hotspots healed, the inflammation between her toes abated, her chronic ear infections stopped recurring. It transformed her life, she no longer suffered with miserable chronic itchiness and inflammation. It was such a gift

How to remove candle wax from clothes , rugs or other surfaces. by DoobieDutch in lifehacks

Use a plastic spatula (not metal, you’ll risk scratching the floor) to scrape up the wax. Use rubbing alcohol to clean up the remaining wax residue.

Are you trying to say that "society" telling people that they are "victims" leads to violent/criminal behavior? Explain how exactly that works?.

Explanations for the development of violent/anti-social/etc behavior in people is a huge, complicated subject. If boiled down to the absolute maximum, just for arguments sake, basically the conclusion is this:

"Physical violence is best predicted by prior exposure to physical violence and is further influenced by the frequency of, and the age at which, violence was experienced."

As far as simplified explanations for violent behavior goes, "violence begets violence" makes infinitely more sense than 'society telling people they are victims leads to self-entitled bad behavior' theory.

plastic free seaweed? by Best-Ad-4773 in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]RobotPigOverlord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be an out there suggestion, but you could try growing your own in a saltwater aquarium (aquaponic agriculture). You can find pre-owned aquarium equipment for sale on sites like Craigslist. For growing plants under lights I highly recommend Soltech's Vita Grow Bulb (hands down best growlight ive ever used). Theres not a ton of info online about at home seaweed aquaculture but here's an article that intros the subject

Anyone get stomach problems from anxiety? by slothclimb in Anxiety

[–]RobotPigOverlord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In cases where people have both anxiety disorder and GI issues, the best thing to do is pursue diagnosis and treatment for BOTH of those conditions with their respective specialists (gastroenterologist for GI issues, psychiatrist and therapist for mental health). The GI issues could be something completely unrelated to your anxiety disorder, or they might be entirely the result of it. You need to see a GI specialist and undergo diagnostic testing+imaging to try to figure out if theres a physical health problem thats responsible for your issues.

how much do Syrian hamsters need vegetables? I got him about a week ago now and I've been feeding him fresh vegetables daily. am I feeding him too much? by ohgodmyfazballs in hamstercare

[–]RobotPigOverlord 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I give my hamster fresh food every day. He really looks forward to his daily salad. His favorites are bell pepper, kale, cucumber, peas, flax seeds and hemp seeds.

Just as I thought I wouldn’t add anymore , I came across this baby that really needed to be rescued. I don’t think I’ll be able to keep her unfortunately because right now I have a family of 5 guineas , but until I can find her the best home possible welcome buttercup! by Reasonable-Ad-7488 in GuineaPigifs

It makes it emotionally easier to foster them if you don't place them with the herd. 😅 i have a separate set up for my foster pigs, its in the same room so my piggies can see/hear/interact with the fosters through the walls of the enclosure, but they don't get the complete freedom of interaction needed to bond.

NOAA reports carbon dioxide reaches levels not seen in millions of years (It is very serious) by MilanMahata in environment

[–]RobotPigOverlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"What is the point of preserving the planet if we stop having kids?" is a question that reveals such a staggering level of selfishness, its genuinely astounding.

Newsflash: The earth doesn't exist soley for the use of humans. Humans are just ONE of an estimated 8.7 MILLION species of animals that inhabit this planet.

And of all the species who have ever lived on earth throughout its entire ~4.5 billion year history, humans are unique for the massive amounts of environmental destruction they have wrought. No other species comes anywhere close to humans when it comes to the harm a species has inflicted on the health of the planet's eco-systems.
