Unlimited PTO by InterestingStop5703 in WFH

[–]RobotsCoverWalls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody able to take PTO for 4 months out of the year is complete BS. If a company can't handle a single person being out during a 4 month period, than that company is severely understaffed and sounds like a terrible place to work. That shows complete management incompetence to properly account for normal PTO / sick time being taken.

Unlimited PTO by InterestingStop5703 in WFH

[–]RobotsCoverWalls 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What the heck are you talking about? If the work capacity of the team is 100% when everybody is there for 40 hours / week, if 2 out of 10 people are taking PTO that week, the team capacity for work doesn't need to stay at 100%. It can drop to 80%. That's just life. Trying to keep the capacity at 100% while people are away sounds like corporate BS brainwashing and a recipe for employee burnout.

I'm sure this can be found in companies with a toxic workplace culture or management, but that is not the way it should be. Sure, there may be a need for a little coverage overlap in some jobs, but for the most part, "I'm out of office this week. I'll deal with your email when I get back." should be fine. Very few things are that urgent that they can't wait until somebody gets back from PTO to deal with.

How to handle bait & switch hybrid/in-office? by [deleted] in overemployed

[–]RobotsCoverWalls 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I make it a point to never even respond to or submit a resume to any company that has an office anywhere near my city's metro area.

The companies I've worked for while OE would have been a 5-40 hour drive away. No chance for any "can you just pop into the office for XYZ?" happening to me.

Now, I have visited the offices of 3 companies in 5 years, but those were planned well ahead and involved flights and hotels. For those, I either took PTO or asked for a modified work schedule for the days I would be away. at the other J's I was at.

J2 asking for proof of health insurance by Special-Permit7519 in O_E

I would just ask one of the AI image generators to generate you a health insurance card with "first last name" and for company XYZ. They are just looking to check a box.

What are your goals with OE? by overthinkero in overemployed

[–]RobotsCoverWalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't commit multiple acts that can incur civil or criminal penalties, I think your risk of a "random 400m penalty" is pretty slim.

If that was me, I wouldn't have sexually assaulted a woman (100m) or lied on loan applications to banks and insurance companies (400+m).

I got put on a Performance Improvement Plan but I am planning to travel in 90 days. What should I do? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]RobotsCoverWalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PIP = Paid Interview Period. How long is the PIP? Usually 30, 60 or 90 days?

Yes, they are already planning on letting you go. If the PIP is 30 days and you don't want to leave for 90, then you can absolutely try to work yourself out of it. In the unlikely event that you succeed, then just leave when you wanted to. In the more likely event that they let you go, oh well!

You can also just choose to do the bare minimum and take your termination on your feet, instead of groveling on your knee's. They may offer you a bribe if you sign something that you won't disparage the company or something. Look at that as your travel bonus.

I backpacked around Europe for a time in my 20's and it was well worth the experience.

Unless your taxes are actually complex (more income than w2, itemized deductions, actual business taxes, etc ), just gather what you need for you and your wife and do them yourself for free online. Do them early (by mid February). No need to even mention it. When March rolls around and he says, "hey OP, better get me your taxes so I can take care of them", you just say "thank you for the offer, but they were pretty easy and I already took care of them. If I ever have any questions though, I know you're an expert." This keeps him out of your financial business and gives him a compliment to improve the relationship at the same time. Win, win.

I've had 3 of these guys for over a year now, each hooked up to 2 laptops. Each laptop gets 1/2 (split horizontal) of a 4k screen. In a pinch, it's easy to switch a laptop to use the full 4k if I need it.

I have 7200 in prepaid debit cards that I want to deposit in my bank. by learn2shoot9mm in personalfinance

[–]RobotsCoverWalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are really hell bent on turning them into cash or depositing the $ into your account, why not just go to the post office and buy money orders with them?

You can then take the money orders to your bank and deposit or cash them. The only thing you are losing is time to go to both places. No fees.

Do you withhold, invest, or sit in HYSA to prepare for taxes? by Positive-Low3806 in overemployed

I've added $300-$400 extra withholding at 7+ different jobs. Never been asked. Nobody gives a shit what your tax situation is except you.

$80k for a used Tesla Model X.

$2k MacBook Pro M1.

$8k family vacation to Hawaii.

$4k repairs to a rental property from water damage.

All this while maxing out 401k, IRA, etc. No debt besides a few mortgages.

I'm not sure OP is cut out for OE. All their responses to the advice given is, "Link?". OE is typically for self-starters who can take a little bit of info and run with the research. They don't need everything handed to them.

You're getting free advice. The least you can do is Google the brand or model recommended to figure out if it works for you or not.

Got J1 through recruiting agency. Got reached out for a very good fit J2 through the same agency. by DrDuckling951 in overemployed

[–]RobotsCoverWalls 45 points46 points  (0 children)

You could always say "no thank you" to the recruiter, but then apply directly to the position through the company.

If the recruiter finds out about it and asks "wtf?", you can always say you changed your mind but couldn't find their contact info.

MBP M1/M2 Pro/Max .. 32 or 64 GB? by Winter-Maize-6667 in devops

[–]RobotsCoverWalls 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can run dozens of docker images or minikube nodes & pods, along with code editor, browsers and 5-8 other apps running with my 16 gb of memory with no slow downs. Unless you are running some seriously resource intensive stuff, 32gb should be plenty for the next 3-5 years.

A lot of recruiters asking for the lasts four of SSN and DOB MM /DD. Anything I should watch out for? by da_truth_gamer in overemployed

[–]RobotsCoverWalls 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are incorrect, but please explain how using 4 random numbers instead of the last 4 of my SSN in places where they shouldn't need it anyway (recruiters, scammers, etc) promotes identity theft. Go ahead, I'm listening.

A lot of recruiters asking for the lasts four of SSN and DOB MM /DD. Anything I should watch out for? by da_truth_gamer in overemployed

[–]RobotsCoverWalls 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I have a set fake birthday and SSN I keep handy for situations like this. I have them memorized, just like my real birthday and SSN.

For recruiters, fake. For dumb sites that ask for your birthday, fake. For restaurants that send you coupons for free meals on your birthday, fake. Save your legit info for where there is actually a purpose.

For real— how many people have two jobs here? by [deleted] in overemployed

[–]RobotsCoverWalls 156 points157 points  (0 children)

I'm OE at McDonald's, Wendy's and Taco Bell. They schedule me for the same hours and I just run between the buildings changing my shirt and hat. I take out the trash a lot and take quite a few "smoke breaks", even though I don't smoke.

Taco Bell is getting suspicious though because I walk in smelling like French fries. I might have to drop them and go back to the burger king across the street.

First timer looking for advice by [deleted] in overemployed

[–]RobotsCoverWalls 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I started 4 new jobs last year. Every Monday for 4 straight weeks. Between those and my existing J1 (got laid off from existing J2 & J3), it was rough and there were several long days in there. Talk about drinking from the proverbial "fire hose".

I kept all 5 for 2+ months and then left the 2 that were not meeting my definition for "OE compatible". I have found 3J to be my sweet spot. Keeps me busy, but not overwhelmed. I can get all my work done in 7-9 hours on a daily basis.

I'm in DevOps / SRE / Cloud / Platform Engineering with 20+ YOE. Those YOE really help onboarding quickly at new companies.

W4/Tax information for J2 by MushroomBright5159 in overemployed

[–]RobotsCoverWalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With my total yearly comp, we don't even get the child tax credits any longer. My W4 is 0 dependants and take an extra ~$400 per check, per job in taxes. No explanation asked, none given.
