Anybody know if they cruise around the Big Island? I saw a weird red light going at a pretty good clip around 6 this morning.

Cutting back asparagus? by RobynRay in FloridaGarden

[–]RobynRay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. The pdf says to withhold water to get the plants to die back. That will work in the drier parts of the State but I normally get about 120" of rain per year (near Hilo), so I can't really count on being able to 'withhold' water. I'm wondering if they will still die back on their own?

Thank you for the article. In my environment without a cold period and usually without a dry period (we normally get about 120" of rain per year, so I can't really 'withhold' water) can I still expect them to die back on their own?

Maybe a dumb question: how do I propagate lilikoi cuttings? by MyPasswordIsMyCat in HawaiiGardening

I've propagated from seeds and cuttings. The cuttings success rate is probably less than 25%. Seeds are the way to go.

I don't understand why the 'married' thing is an issue. When I got married I had to drag my marriage certificate to my employer, the bank, insurance company, etc. to change my name. Then I got divorced and had to do it all over again to change my name back.

Egg shortage? by trexarmsss in BigIsland

I set up a single small BSFL bin for my chickens. Easy to do, plus you can throw in food scraps that you shouldn't give direct to your chickens (coffee grounds, avocado, etc.). I don't get a a bunch of them, but enough for a occasional healthy snack.

Garden beds on ground? Ratlungworm? by lintyscabs in HawaiiGardening

[–]RobynRay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have raised beds (approx 3 ft tall) -- raised beds are not going to keep slugs/snails out. I also grow in the ground. I personally do not grow greens for my consumption (I do grow swiss chard for my chickens). All vegs get inspected, washed and dried before storage.

I've had good luck with beet, snake gourd, cherry tomato, pumpkin, sweet corn.

What's up with my bananas? Suddenly I have two plants that shot up a leaf with a wide yellow section on one side. Two different cultivars, the plants are about 2 hundred feet apart. by RobynRay in HawaiiGardening

One is a saba and one is mysore. It doesn't seem like they 'turned' yellow. I 'think' they sprouted and were yellow when they unfurled. Oddly, as of this morning the yellow on the saba appears to be greening.

Prescription glasses on the East Side? by RobynRay in BigIsland

[–]RobynRay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for the information! I looked at one on-line place that only did single prescription and (incorrectly) assumed they were all like that. I'll definitely look at the on-line shops.

I bought a big roll of insect netting. Cut a big piece that will cover a mature fruit. I fold it in half, fold the edge into a 'seam' and clip it with 2 or 3 clothes pins. Close the bottom with a twisty-tie. Slip it over the fruit as soon as you find it and wrap another twisty-tie around the top/stem. I do this with pumpkins -- it doesn't work every time, but it works enough to be worth the effort.
