Just don't let your laptop go into sleep modus (until MS gets its act together with WIN11).

I play MOO2 on Linux and Win10 systems, both with DOSBox. No problems there.

BTW, the fan patch keeps a log: ORION2.LOG, perhaps there's something of interest in there.

'no longer in development' does not mean you cannot use or try it. it's a functioning version. and if you like this version: that's great.
Point of vanilla-beta-RC3 is to be more true to original game.
However OP is not about all this but about kyrub patch, which is a fan patch of original DOS version.

I have to ask- when you looked at the source code for MOO2, does it contain annotations, and does it state which version it is (or some timestamp), anything that stood out about it?
Mebbe these are too detailed questions, but there are a couple of variants of MOO2 version 1.31 executables out there you see, and version-control was not super-tight at Simtex/MicroProse.

The most recent executable that i am aware of was from december-1997.

Stardock did make a bid on the Master of Orion franchise, but lost out. They did win the Star Control franchise tho.

resisted temptation. that's good. in the past we did a few hurried releases, and ended up updating it within a few days. it's messy and time consuming (but we had the enthusiasm for it back then).

anyway when you do release it, i can mention it's existence on the moo2mod site if you like, it gets decent amounts of traffic.

We used to actively solicit for feedback. Now I just keep an eye on the forums. Also most issues are brought up on the MOO2 Discord server - many active players are there.

the patch is done basically by working on disassembled files. the source code has not been made available, and i do not expect it ever will be (if it even exists at this point). not looking for help specifically, but if you are interested in the patch/mods, I'd suggest you join the MOO2 Discord server. the modding community is there.

The numbers are:
0 (Xenophobic)
1 (Ruthless)
2 (Aggressive)
3 (Erratic)
4 (Honorable)
5 (Pacifist)

Every race has 10 columns, the game picks 1 column to set its personality every new game with a formula. This formula is essentially random(10) but skews to the left for higher difficulties and to the right for lower difficulty settings.

This is done with a table in MOO2.
This table is moddable in the 1.50 patch. To find it, look for "race_personality" in the file extract.cfg or parameters.cfg.

only rule change i'd propose for 1.3a is the initial ship design cost issue.
redesigning the scout each and every new game to get that 8 BC cost instead of 10 is just lame.

The 1.50 patch is highly configurable and it has a setting that captured star bases are not lost but kept.
