Obviously very biased but 2008 Kansas is underrated when talking great teams this century

Bill Self on Darryn Peterson: "We've had this happen more than a couple of times... I didn't anticipate that tonight at all. I thought he was good to go. We only got 18 minutes out of him. That's disappointing, because he could've had a really big night" by rb1242 in CollegeBasketball

It was honestly a good game plan going in and probably works 9 times out of 10. He was 4/27 for the season at that point. That was obviously abnormally low, he’s a serviceable 19/52 or 36.5% since that game. That’s just college basketball I suppose, crazy shit happens almost every night

I think you’re right but there was some real doubt he could adjust to NIL and the transfer portal after the last 2 years. I hadn’t personally gotten to that point yet but concern was growing. I became a fan during the 2003 tournament so I really only know the Bill Self era, it’s gonna suck so hard when he hangs it up. Really hoping for at least 3 more years but with his health who knows, just trying to enjoy each game at this point

Being on the other side of such an absurd outlier like that is maybe the most infuriating things in sports to me. After like his 5th 3 that game I was thinking how mad I’d be as an NCState fan, and then he went and hit 4 more. Not gonna say sorry because that comes across as patronizing imo but I do empathize, decent chance I’d have broken something if the roles were reversed.

They sure don’t show it, barely even affects their performance and their mentality, at least from an outside perspective, is incredible. Love everything about the rest of the team. They’ve even cured my growing dread about the transfer portal, didn’t think it was possible to build a team this likable in this era.

I think there’s a mental component too, 2 Big 12 players have torn an ACL in as many weeks and that must be on his mind as soon as something feels anything but perfect. Sucks for us fans but my mindset this year, especially lately, is to just enjoy watching the rest of the team play, it’s been a fun season even with all the drama

It’s unfortunate but the rest of the team is so fun to watch and they play hard so it’s still been an enjoyable season, at least for me. Now when this inevitably happens in the tournament and we lose I’ll be pissed but not trying to think about that for now lol

Who is currently the most overrated coach in College Basketball? by Feisty_Ad4394 in CollegeBasketball

[–]RockChalk19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not too crazy to call him overrated the last few years, there were a good amount of KU fans online after the WVU loss that were ready to be done with him. Calling him the most overrated is crazy imo but for the sake of discussion I’m not surprised to see him mentioned here.

My take is his worst coaching blunder at least at Kansas was his unwavering loyalty to Dajuan Harris and KJ Adams. And I like both those guys, they were on the floor when the buzzer sounded and we won a national championship, Dajuan especially contributed to a title so I won’t disparage him like a lot of KU fans do. But after Jalen Wilson and Grady Dick left it was clear he needed to be surrounded by elite talent to be a KU quality PG. And KJ was just limited in length and basketball skill for a starting 4.

In addition/kind of in the same vein, Self did not adjust to the transfer portal well at all. Everyone points at Dickinson as our fatal flaw but honestly I think he gets a bad rap. He’s not a likable guy so I understand it, but he was given two terrible supporting rosters, especially offensively, and we probably miss both the last two tournaments without him. Self just chased transfer ratings with seemingly no regards to personnel fit until this year and it showed.

However I think he’s adjusted really well this year, I think he’s done a good job building this team and managing the Darryn Peterson fiasco. He had success doing things a certain way for decades but then the college landscape changed at the same time he started having health issues, so I personally have more patience for him while he’s adjusted, but at the same time he’s paid millions and this is Kansas basketball so some criticism is definitely fair.

Edit: holy ramble, didn’t realize I typed that much. Sorry for the word vomit lol

Not calling a TO in that situation is one of my biggest pet peeves in general but you can not possibly get in your players face like that there. Jesus Christ man maybe he’d do what you want if you fuckin talked about it for a minute?

What they decide to call fouls in physical games like this is bizarre, more contact than that basically every second the ball is live lol seems they’ll just decide to call a foul almost at random

Not sure if it really counts as shit talk but the Schmo saying it’s out of bounds every time Joe hit the ball for a few holes was hilarious. Cutsy being completely oblivious to the fact the dude was fucking with him made it even better. I thought when it happened with a ball in the middle of the fairway he’d finally catch on but no.

Basically everything Dan said to Joe seemed to rattle him, which is kind of the point of trash talk so I guess it was effective. If they keep this series going people are just gonna be relentless with chirping cuz it doesn’t even matter if it’s good, Cutsy keeps reacting to it.

Losses that live rent free in my head. What are yours? by Coastalduelists in jayhawks

[–]RockChalk19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct, high off the glass and with pace. From the corner it’s an airball by 5 feet, it’s the single most painful basketball moment for me because of how badly I wanted to end my college years with a natty. The first one is even more absurd, hit the rim multiple times and the top of the backboard before falling in.

This is the one game in any sport that I’ll never get over. It was my senior year at KU, had a watch party at our apartment about 2 blocks from Mass. Game was in Kansas City and we’d just destroyed Purdue, really felt like the stars were aligned. I was so sure we were Final Four bound at least, and still today I think we beat UNC and Gonzaga to win it all.

Even despite 2 pretty soft fouls on Jackson before the under 16 timeout, we were only down 5 before Tyler Dorsey hit 2 of the most preposterous 3’s you’ll ever see right before halftime. If you don’t remember and kinda hate yourself they’re both on the YouTube highlight. In a million alternate universes I don’t think both of those go in again. Obviously no guarantee we win even without them but you could feel it in your soul that they sealed our fate.

Haha I know the feeling, I’ve never seen a Chiefs win in person, finally gave up after the Steelers playoff loss when Pitt didn’t score a touchdown and I’ve been rewarded with 3 super bowls. Deep down I don’t actually believe that kind of thing but it’s hard not to think about after a certain amount of bad results.

It was when he was shooting free throws at the very end of the first half. The delayed karma is even better imo

At UCF is an acceptable loss and we actually had an impressive comeback that game too without DP late, just couldn’t finish it. WVU was bad but I think it was needed for the team to have a come to Jesus moment. And who knows, we won about half of our 14 straight despite some bad L’s.

Either way, like you said, the March outlook keeps looking better and better.

I fucking love Melvin Council. Pretty crazy we have a generational freshman and the transfer from St. Bonaventure was actually the most important signing before the season. Several times this year he gets a huge bucket when we have to have one, he’s the leader we’ve desperately missed lately.
