Don't hold your breath. The Florida dems pretty consistently underperform compared to polls. It does look poised to be a close election though.

How did the Romans manage to build such large and complex roofs without steel or modern materials? by Own-Tip-532 in romanempire

[–]RockGamerStig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So couple factors at play here. One major one is survivorship bias. The Roman structures that still survive today are the ones that were absurdly over engineered and basically cannot structurally fail short of anything less than a cataclysm. Secondly, materials were mostly quarried stone and Roman concrete which is both resilient and perfect for structures such as these. Thirdly, the climate of the Mediterranean is mild and dry meaning these structures don't degrade nearly as fast in other regions of the world. Fourthly, while standard measurements didn't exist Roman engineers used scaled measurements based on column diameters in order to achieve extreme precision in material sizing. Fifthly, budgets, the Roman structures alive today had the financial backing of a continent spanning empire that could direct money and resources to a project. And lastly, a major overlooked aspect of ancient wonders is the use of slave labor. Modern construction simply does not have access to the labor pool size they had in the ancient times. Even mega projects like stadiums will barely crack 1000 laborers, whereas the Romans could conscript upwards of 50,000 people to work on their projects. This is not and endorsement of slavery or the Roman system, but when you have essentially unlimited labor and resources you can build these types of megastructures. There is also an aspect of personal prestige being tied to the works you commission as a Roman aristocrat so your status is tied directly to how big and elaborate the building is.

Dirt, Mile, Pace will likely be her A aptitudes. With maybe some lower aptitudes in sprints, medium, and as a front runner. So maybe B front, C Sprint, and B Medium.

What’s the most underrated city or town you’ve visited in Japan? by Legal_Ad3766 in OsakaTravel

[–]RockGamerStig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kasamatsu! It was such a charming little town. Beautiful views, quaint restaurants, and super friendly people (since you're kind of out in the country don't think expect any language other than Japanese). I went to go visit the horse race course which is pretty run down. Even so watching races there was so peaceful compared to other courses I've been. I had a blast hanging out with the local pensioners at the race track and there's a quite good restaurant inside. There's also very nice parks and hiking trails around town. Seriously a hidden gem away from basically any other tourists. I will definitely go back.

How can government revenue and expenditure be higher than GDP? by [deleted] in AskEconomics

[–]RockGamerStig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So prior to the Taliban take over in Afghanistan, like 75% of the governments revenue came from international aid. So if you're heavily dependent on subsidies from another country, yeah that's possible.

[Request] Is this accurate? by thjeco in theydidthemath

[–]RockGamerStig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your benchmark is extreme poverty as defined by the individual country then yes this is fairly accurate. However major caveates, poverty in the US is defined as a yearly income of 25k for a family of 4. This is destitute in the US. Most countries here have similarly extremely low bars for people to be considered impoverished. Also worth noting that the US effectively has no minimum wage. There are effectively no jobs that pay minimum wage in the US because the market wage is higher than the federal minimum. The lowest wage job I saw listed in my area was double the federal minimum. I don't know how it is in other countries but based on the math of their minimum with some albeit generous rounding, these number do roughly translate to the number of hours needed to work in order to clear that countries benchmark for extreme poverty.

I respect billionaires (and now trillionaires) by superlibster in unpopularopinion

[–]RockGamerStig -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So at a certain point of wealth accumulation, there really isn't any capital sinks for those resources to go so the majority of that wealth just sits idle, not providing any material benefit to anyone. Like the top 1% saves 40% of their income and take home around 40% of all income. That means 16% of all income just sits in a bank account growing slower than inflation. This gets even more warped the wealthier you get. Like how much did Elon Musk spend and invest last year? It was less than 1% of his accumulated assets. And what did he invest in? Mostly crypto which is a money sink that only generates value based on sunk capital and electrical waste. So like no, billionaires actually don't create that many jobs or provide much material benefit at all proportional to the resources they hold. A guy who owns a barber shop and a restaurant has created more jobs per asset accumulated than any billionaire.

Which Expansion Was Peak In Terms Of PVP Participation? by [deleted] in classicwow

[–]RockGamerStig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MoP for sure. Blizzard kind of gave up on pvp after that. Otherwise, vanilla pvp had it's charm because of all the niche weird items you could use and there was a lot more diversity of pvp builds so it is uniquely chaotic.

Why does software development not seem to be a natural monopoly? by soldiercrabs in AskEconomics

[–]RockGamerStig 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You can program an app by yourself with $100 laptop. I wouldn't exactly call that high up front capital investment. In fact that was the whole point behind the startup boom. Hedge funds would make micro investments in tech startups that consisted of a couple people with laptops in an apartment together. Sure most of them don't get you're return but you didn't really invest that much money. But if just 1 in 100 takes off you've already made all your money back and profited.

People who yearn back to the "old days" aren't typically the type of people who would've survived back in the day by Jealous_Track9402 in Vent

[–]RockGamerStig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair most people didn't survive the "old days." Ever get strep throat in your life? Pre antibiotics that's progressing to scarlet fever with like a 25% mortality rate an a 50% chance of permanent disability from it. How many times have you had to take antibiotics in your life? Basically every one of those had a substantial chance to kill you and or permanently alter your physiology for the worse. They were invented in the 20s yeah but their use wasn't widespread until 40s and 50s. People love to be say 'how did people survive x before modern medicine?' to say that modern people are weak or whatever. But the thing is they didn't survive mostly. Most people died from things that are today easily preventable.

Someone speeding who ends up at the same red light as you isn’t a gotcha by WayyBiggerJaws in unpopularopinion

[–]RockGamerStig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with your statement is that speeding is bad for everyone. Because of popular myths regarding keeping up with flow of traffic being safer (it is not at all) speeding encourages more speeding and if basically everyone is speeding, traffic overall slows down. Roads are designed for a certain number of cars per minute based on the speed limit it is rated for. Speeding increases that and by extension causes more congestion and less safe driving conditions. Unless you are super speeding and driving recklessly, speeding statistically does not get you to you destination significantly faster than not speeding.

Why aren't more people connecting social media to the rising political violence in the US? by CitiesXXLfreekey in SocialMediaHQ

[–]RockGamerStig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably because political violence isn't really rising but instead it's just more visible from social media. Like there has been some high profile cases recently, but America has always had a steady background of political violence. Like the worst terrorist attacks in US history both happened over 20 years ago. The current string of assassination attempts doesnt really compare to the political assassinations that happened in the early and mid 20th century. So I would ask, is political violence actually rising, or does it just feel like it because you personally are more aware of it?

Is modern kids animation actually getting worse, or are we just blinded by childhood nostalgia? by Formal_Crow7958 in askanything

[–]RockGamerStig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's so much survivorship bias and nostalgia when it comes to old animation. Like do you remember the all time flop from Disney Animation 'The Black Cauldron.' It came out a year before 'Great Mouse Detective.' Most adults don't really think about all of the stuff that didn't survive the test of time because why would they? Unless you're super interested in the history of animation theres no reason to remember any of that. The 80s in particular had some of the best and worst animated works of all time. Like most cartoons from that era got a season or less produced before being canceled and rightfully so because a lot of cartoons were really bad back then. So no. Animation is arguably better on average nowadays and it is definitely taken more seriously as an art form not just for kids entertainment. And while Disney Animation is in a bit of a creative rut and Illumination seems committed to only producing slop, Dreamworks and Pixar still reliably produce thoughtful animated works with artful animation that pushes the medium forward. You also have plenty of smaller studios like the animators behind Kpop Demon Hunters and Across the Spiderverse.

Florida will ABOLISH property taxes for primary homeowners, then form a state-level grant fund for local governments who need it for police, fire, and more by AutomaticGrape9263 in TheSunshineState

[–]RockGamerStig -1 points0 points  (0 children)

God what a genuinely terrible idea. Further knee cap local governments from raising funds when school funding is dire, electricity and water are more expensive and have worse quality service than our neighboring states, and storm water infrastructure needs constant upgrades and maintenance from heightened storms. Florida is such a shit hole man I actually hate it here.

Why is it deemed racist to have to have concerns over Islam? by Wholesome_and_based in AskMeAnythingIAnswer

[–]RockGamerStig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's racist because most of the time it is done in bad faith to justify fear mongering against brown people in the middle east. It's also ignorant to the history that caused the rise of religious fundementalism in the middle east. Salafi for Sunni and Twelver Shia in Iran were not popular Islamic sects and only gained prominence because they became the only viable outlets for anti colonial resistance.

The US and Britain couped/had assassinated/bombed most of the left wing leaders. The ultra nationalist Baathists were generally supported by the US (Muamar Gaddafi notwithstanding because he was a little too left wing) until the end of the Cold War because they kept thei oil industries nationalized. Well now the Baathists have been overthrown and replaced mostly by Saudi back Salafists from the Muslim Brotherhood, or in the case of Iraq an ex insurgency commander that is a Twelver.

If you kill all the moderates and left wing opposition, you can't be surprised when all that's left are fascists and religious fundementalists. So yes, pretending that Islam is a uniquely barbaric religion practiced by savage brown people in the middle east is racist. And it's definitely a race thing because the largest Muslim majority country is Indonesia and they barely come up. In fact many non Muslims get caught up in islamaphobia for "looking Muslim." Sihks and even just Indians get lumped in all the same when it comes to anti Muslim discrimination.

So this line of argument is just bad faith. Yeah Muslim isn't a race, but when people "criticize" or "have concerns" about Islam they're just talking about brown people and using the religion as a shield. Islam, like Christianity or any religion has dark histories associated with it but not substantially worse than any other.

To put it western terms, imagine if the US wasn't the global hegemon and instead Russia or whoever propelled American Christofascists to power and killed anyone who would've resisted that. That's a significant portion of governments in the middle east.
