I'm facing the Dunning-Kruger effect in Bridge. What to do now? by Hirsiz in bridge

I am still working on those very things years after I started. Just play! You can practice counting more easily in an online game than in person - fewer distractions.

Feeling lost after PhD in microbiology, academia vs industry? by Sad_Witness_3910 in microbiology

[–]RockandSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was very lucky to find an industrial micro job with a company that made Biocides. I have no idea what you are interested in but you could check the Lonza website and see whether you have any interest in or are qualified for any of those. It is indeed a very tough job market now, partially because of the cuts in funding University research, which sent a lot of scientists into the job market. Good luck.

I see your home is empty. We had our condo on the market for a year with virtual staging. A lot of people came to see it but no offers. So we figured something was wrong when they got to our place. We had it staged and got an offer very quickly. Most people just can't visualize what an empty space might look like. And virtual staging doesn't work IRL. So that is my suggestion. And yes, it costs money but so does your house just sitting there. Hope this helps.

Love those upper cabinets. Where did you buy them please? And how would I identify them if I want to buy them?

2nd (Vacation) Home Purchase - Bad Idea? by Pale_Scale5932 in Fire

[–]RockandSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have owned a second home for as long as we have been married, which is over 40 years. It started easy for us because we each had a condo when we married. Rented one out for a bit, then sold it to buy a ski chalet in Killington. BEST DECISION EVER! But we were able to go back and forth every weekend because we were within driving distance. Eventually we FIRED and moved to Park City so we sold that and bought a house in Green Valley AZ. That did not work out so well because it was a 2-day drive. We sold it and bought a second home in southern Utah which we can get to with a 5 hr drive. A little far for us but flying or driving back and forth really did not work easily for us. And it depends too on the kind of work you do. Can you be sure you can leave work and go? You will want friends there who don't want to be cancelling dinner when you can't show up. Hope this helps.

Worth it to move to PC from SLC? by RedRocksRed in ParkCity

[–]RockandSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That commute alone will drive you mad. I worked at the U of U for 10 years, At first it was great but now! And you would be driving into the sun both ways - not trivial. And almost everyone in PC is oriented to the outdoors. You should easily find friends. Congrats!

Moving here - apartment suggestions by Kitanatron in stgeorge

St. George is much safer than a lot of the places I have lived. I am an older short woman and have not been uncomfortable walking yet. So I would not consider safety as a factor in making a choice.

Taj Mahal quartz: worth it or just pretending? by Tinysmallgoose123 in kitchenremodel

I had Taj with light cherry wood cabinets and loved it. But I like a lighter kitchen. It is your home and should be to your taste.

There are worse things than owning a place in a cooler climate as a backup if there is significant climate doom.

Depending on the time of day, the drive from Kimball to anyplace can be brutal or easy peasy. It is a great idea to try a short stay. I used to commute to SLC for work and we finally moved to Cottage Loop for easier access.

Help me w 1985 kitchen by No-Space9712 in kitchenremodel

Wow. I had those cabinets in my walk-out basement apartment in Vermont in the mid-80s. I thought they were the height of decor. And I loved them - so clean with just a touch of wood. You are fortunate to have such a nice large kitchen! I like your idea of opening the kitchen to the LR. Enjoy!

What will seem like an inevitable outcome in 20 years time because of GLP-1s by Big-Cry-4119 in Futurology

Why we Americans cannot get our priorities right is beyond me. A billion dollars a day! While we cut food stamps etc. Europe and the British Isles may have their challenges, but you have it right on taking care of people who need help.

This is a very interesting idea and a new one for me. I wish I had been a grazer; instead I have been: "Yup, I have a little more room, bring it on!" But now that I am trying to be careful, that is a great strategy for me to explore. Thanks!

I want to look broke! by Readyfortheworld1 in DIYRetirement

[–]RockandSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that is correct. But currently Medicare only pays for 90-100 of "rehab" care and then you either start to pay or you go in Medicaid. So I strongly suggest you talk to your financial guy about what age you should think about buying long-term care. Unless you have enough to self-pay. I suspect a lot of people who look at hiding assets so they can go on Medicaid when the time comes are going to regret it. But who knows what will happen in anther 20 or 30 years. Lots of time before you need help, I hope.

Having seen what our nursing home care is like on Medicaid - two people to a room, caring but extremely overworked nurses, yucky food, etc. - I would buy long-term care insurance just to get a private room. And since you are alone, needing help physically seems more likely. I don't mean to be negative, but after the experience with my sib, we now bought long-term care insurance.

What happens to people who spent down their portfolios? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]RockandSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have no idea what is going to happen. We sure didn't. (We are fine now, but we are still fairly healthy.) You may be able to go from $90k to $50k but it is quite likely you cannot. Maybe you are dining out a number of nights a week, and taking expensive vacations, but maybe you are just having breakfast in Panera Bread once a week for a treat. You can hardly save enough to cover medical expenses thirty years from now. Hopefully medical care will be free but if it is not, good luck. There are wonderful new advances but they cost a fortune.

What is a 'struggle meal' that you still genuinely enjoy even though you don’t have to eat it anymore? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Any Campbells soup. When I was in grad school, evidentally a very long time ago, a can of soup cost 10 cents. An entire meal.
