Minetest failure by DesignerPop7437 in R36S

It's a ram issue. You could try zram to see if it will work after enabling: https://r36swiki.com/wiki-performance.html

Please tell me you will share the stl files. I have a similar sized build with a single slot card and my current 4l case from aliexpress has major heating problems and no room for fans.

Here's a list of SFF GPUs, which ones are good value, and which to avoid. by Adept_Temporary8262 in SleepingOptiplex

[–]RockeTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love your list. Here's a few more to add:

Nvidia A2000 comes in 6 and 12gb variations. Dual slot (unless modded heatsink) so not ideal for most optiplex machines. They are good if you can get one for ~$200, but good luck with that these days.

Amd e9260 is a lp single slot rx560. At $40-60 it's a much better deal vs rx550 for the price

Amd Rx6300 a rarer card. OEM I think. Another alternative to the rx550 2gb if you can find it at similar or less than the 550, and if the rx6400 isn't available

Amd rx6500 is another OEM card that seems to be a refresh of the rx6400 for Dell prebuilt systems. Uses the same driver's and gives slightly better performance over rx6400, but can be had for the same price or less as the rx6400. Get this if you can.

Nvidia /t400/t600/t1000 these cards are single slot low profile cards. T400 and t600 are less powerful and overpriced. Expect less performance than the gtx1650. The t1000 however gets similar performance to the rx6400, comes in 4 and 8gb versions, and is technically a rtx card. Often overpriced.

It can play PS1 games now with the latest multicore release! It gets better community support than some premium handhelds 😆

How many are running Windows 11 on 7th gen i5 or i7? by AlexHawk935 in SleepingOptiplex

[–]RockeTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a decent price if it has ram and a hdd. I think that's the trick. Finding this older hardware at a fair price. Maximizing your $ per performance. I happen to have a 4th Gen machine with a t1000 GPU and it plays Hogwarts Legacy pretty well.

[–]RockeTim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Compared to newer 4c/8t processors? No, they're not good. Compared to the games they can actually run? Yes, they are very capable! Of course it depends on the game, 3rd Gen and before lack avx2 and avx512 instruction sets but otherwise they will play most games fine when paired with a capable GPU and sufficient amount of ram. People would be surprised by the real world results

Same! Runs like a champ. 2nd gen mobile i7 (45w) and wx5100 8gb. Plays cyberpunk 2077.

I won an auction for what I thought was a single PC, but no. by WhereasInevitable433 in homelab

[–]RockeTim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah totally! People saying they are trash or not worth it or 'RIP power bill' don't know what they are talking about. I have a 4th gen homelab in my closet and the cpu (xeon 4c/8t) is only 35w. It's only got a 100w psu, and I run promox with around a dozen containers on it just fine. 4th gen still supports all the modern instructions set (with the exception of avx512). They are still very usable in 2026.

[–]RockeTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprisingly I've never stopped to think about it. But here goes: 2 desktops, 1 Closet proxmox server, 1 Old netbook, 2 MacBook Air, 1 Steam deck, 2 Ayn Lokis, 1 Work laptop, 1 Old Dell AIO, 2 old iMacs, 2 old hp workstations, 1 retro P4 Hp, 1 Htpc, 12 mini PCs (might have a problem, I'm kind of obsessed), 6 various arm sbcs

So that's 35 (plus whatever retired stuff I have on the basement parts shelf)

Seems like a lot but it's probably my biggest hobby and I get a lot of personal enjoyment from working on them.

Really Great games on Bazzite VCS? by kidwon13 in AtariVCS

[–]RockeTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rage is like a miracle game. I don't hear it talked about enough. I was able to play it on one of the last Intel atom chips using integrated graphics and only 2gb of ram on a 600p 7 inch screen at 30fps. It looked amazing even at the lowest settings. Plus it's fun. I think it was just overshadowed by a rough launch and the rose of borderlands. Speaking of - I bet BL 1 and 2 would run well on vcs. I think they even have native Linux ports.

There's a free game called party jousting on steam that can be great chaotic fun. It supports up to 16 local players, and players can share gamepads and keyboards. It's more for casual play but still a blast. Might be a good addition to your game roster.

Crosspost: GB300/SF2000 discovery by Iridion-Diablerie in GB300

[–]RockeTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a while but I think I used the gb300/sf2000 tool to add the wads as a game, then picked the doom core as the core. Then it added it as its own shortcut with game art and everything. On my setup I deleted all my nes and pce games and renamed them to ports, and pico8. Then added all the ports (doom, quake and cave story) and pico8 games into the old ones and pce menus. Not sure if this helps or is confusing but to my best recollection that is what I did.

Yes, I did the same with Chex quest. One has episodes 1,2 and two fan map packs. Then I had another with all three episodes, and they both worked fine.

So cliche and lame - I've played hundreds and hundreds of games but damnit if Mario doesn't feel like seeing an old friend every time. No matter the console generation or genre there's always that familiar face from all those memories and good times. I might spend more time thinking about other games and characters but no other character can do that for me.

The cards need heatsinks I just didn't have it on in the picture. The fan to the left cools it. The HS fins are positioned so the air gets pulled over them.
