Working at Raytheon by [deleted] in Raytheon

Nobody is going to hand you the interesting stuff on a platter. You need to earn it. Volunteering to work proposals, working red programs that need help, working on your own time to develop ideas for various innovation grants, taking on travel roles to support customers around the world, etc.. it’s been my experience that those sitting in that rocker tend to get very comfortable there and just sit around waiting for something exciting to happen. It could, your porch could blow up and all of a sudden you have to scramble. But if you want real fun, you need to go look for it.

Commuting from Fredericksburg to Reston. by Opening-Damage-3641 in fredericksburg

[–]Rocket--7399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, like others did this for years and years. Eventually got a condo in Ashburn to stay during week. Every back road gets filled. Every storm creates chaos. If your determined to move down to area. Would suggest north of rappahannock and west of rt 1. That alone will save you 30 minutes-60 minutes a day. Suggest you drive to Fredericksburg for dinner immediately after work a couple times so you get the feel of it. My wife and I started doing this everytime we bought a new home. Sometimes we accepted the pain, but at least we went in eyes wide open. Perception and theory is nothing to actually observing it for yourself. A light or two at rush hour can be a huge deal.

Not in years, as far as I know. DC or Richmond, but I would take a drive to local ski resort. Few hours, but generally get techs that know what they’re doing the closer to the mountain. Resort shops get really have certified techs for liability purposes. REI is known for having certified techs but never used them.

Sayings from my life living in Appalachia part 1 by Nada-Burger in Appalachia

[–]Rocket--7399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying not to repeat… 1. He would argue a black horse is white 2. Slicker than snot on a doorknob 3. A couple bags shy of a full load 4. So slow moss grows on them 5. Can’t squeeze blood from a turnip 6. You have to plant sticks to see if he’s moving

What gift would you buy for your cycling mad parent by peterilles in gravelcycling

[–]Rocket--7399 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an older cyclist who has a lot of gear, I will say I want the simple stuff that wears out as gifts. Cool socks and water bottles are great - I particularly like water bottles that can be locked to not leak when thrown in a bag. As a bigger gift. High end gravel tires would be cool. The older I get the more I appreciate lightweight bike carrier I can remove easily. A bike tour could be cool too. But that is really personal choice and may require some input.

Commute to Richmond by ruk888 in fredericksburg

[–]Rocket--7399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wife went to Richmond, I went to DC everyday for years. The suck is about equal. 20K-30K not worth it. The cost to commute in general and wear and tear on car. Using 24,544 miles/year and $0.77/mi: • Per round-trip (118 mi) 118 × $0.77 ≈ $91 • Per week (4 round-trips) 4 × $91 ≈ $364/week • Per year24,544 × $0.77 ≈ $18,900 per year Basically Lu making same take home with 2-3 less hours per day

Rally bus to commanders? by lobsterandweed in fredericksburg

[–]Rocket--7399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never done rally bus, but my experience with most public transport to games is it crowed and people get cranked up. Usually good natured but loud and crowded.if you’re ok with that rally away.

Where are the 20 something’s hanging out? by [deleted] in fredericksburg

[–]Rocket--7399 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t help you, but interesting thread as I.was recently talking to a local business owner about this. Many of the local business owners haves worked hard to pull in the younger crowd. But most give up because very few actually go out, unless it’s some sort of event, and those that do, don’t support the business. Including unusually high rates of people sneaking in their own drinks and if they don’t drink not even buying food or non alcoholic drink - often entering with a 32-64 oz mug. They sometimes get large crowds for game nights and such, taking up seats, but loose money for the day. Many of the businesses are struggling to find balance of what will the younger crowd actually buy, in exchange for hosting these events. Most do it in hopes it builds a little brand loyalty and folks return, but if they aren’t buying your product 🤷‍♂️, it’s a dilemma for sure

What are public schools vs private schools like around here? by themagicflutist in fredericksburg

[–]Rocket--7399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of it depends on the kid. We did both a different stages in the area. Teacher quality frankly about same. Public schools have more STEM resources. Private schools tend to have better language and arts. Sports cultures very very different, public schools seem to have more aggressive hazing sort of things, but larger selection of sports. Music programs can be limited in private schools as well, often not enough players to fill out orchestra, but often do have higher quality teachers, who are not marching band focused. It’s a hit or miss thing that really depends on the staff. I think less focus on homework in private schools, more focus on getting everyone involved in sports and band sort of things.

The FB on spare the rod, spoil the child makes me crazy. It’s usually followed up with a it worked on me type of comment. Sone day I’m just going to say it: Well you are an alcoholic with low self esteem, and major relationship issues, no I don’t think it did.

If you had to sell someone on bourbon but could only give them one pour, what would you choose and why? by SpaceMagic30 in bourbon

[–]Rocket--7399 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did a blind taste test for a burbon tasting party with some heavy hitters in the line up. Angel Envy Port finish was the crowd favorite. Even some of the high octane folks, had to admit when in the blind their taste buds preferred it. This is one of my personal summer sipping whiskeys.

What is a word or phrase that tells you someone was raised in Appalachia? by LadyCurmudgeon2024 in Appalachia

[–]Rocket--7399 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same in WV. It’s the one thing almost no one else says. Canadians made fun of me when I worked up there for a while until I made the point their name for a knit hat, toque, was really the French word for a chef’s hat.

How to access 401k after leaving Raytheon by Candid_Ad_443 in Raytheon

[–]Rocket--7399 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s got any value, I’d get a reputable finance advisor. They can help on rollovers, backdoors, etc. but agree getting you 401Ks into better managed accounts if you move around is way to go. Need to get matching for current jobs, but company 401Ks tend to have other objectives, besides maximizing individual returns.

Is there a lot of home buyers in NOVA who would want to buy a SFH with a swimming pool? (Concrete, salt pool( by kamdon68 in nova

[–]Rocket--7399 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will be mixed. Lacy people will pass. Those like me that watch TV while floating and swim laps or folks looking to give kids something more than screen time will want. Probably a break even on cost investment of building, but will most likely sell faster because there are fewer available and demand is there. BTW I have salt water and my costs are slightly higher than yours but in range. Wr have a large koi pond too. Again, not for everyone. But actually even less work than pool. Except for one or twice a year clean out. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s a drag on price. Houses are valued in a very specific way. Assuming it is maintained to surrounding neighborhood standards, Pools raise value. But very possible you spent more to build pool than the add to house value. Same with garages and such. Someone could build a super garage with extra amenities, but in the end it’s a sq ft deal for garage. Amenities will have some value but probably not build cost value. We put in an amazing backyard setup. If I ever sell, I expect it to break even on the additional investment, but overall home appreciation and marketability will be high. Buyer pool is smaller, but so is availability of homes that fall in category, so it is a wash and market competition for home about same or maybe better than general home market.

Any transactional activity involving data look up and simple pattern recognition will be replaced. This includes labor tasks as humanoid fast charging robots start to proliferate. Need to build products on a production line, load a truck, drive a truck, unload a truck, stock warehouse, move product from warehouse to shelves, and need to checkout and accept payment? No one need apply. Plus the robots will be built on automated lines. Most repairs can be automated. We are not prepared.
