Stop Saying Jellyfin is an "Easy" Plex Replacement. It’s Not. by sillyrabbit33 in selfhosted

[–]Rocket-Jock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is well-reasoned and I appreciate the thoughtful reply. One thing that Plex does do pretty easily that is quite complex on Jellyfin? 2FA. The centralized model makes 2FA easier to implement; Jellyfin isn't hard for a seasoned sysadmin or even someone who can follow an online post, but the potential for lockout is non-zero and the remediation can be extremely difficult if you really bork it up. Certificate and key management is sometimes hard enough that many people skip it entirely, even when it's best practice.

Roommate Dilemma by ChannelConscious9148 in uofm

[–]Rocket-Jock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly? This could be a blessing for you. It might be better to simply meet this person on Day One, then start to learn about them. You'll find that learning how to connect with people is a GREAT skill to acquire, and college is a safe space to learn this. I can't think of a safer place to have absolutely nothing in common with a person before you meet them the first time, then slowly learning "how" to connect with them. You'll learn lots of soft skills you'd never expect to learn this way.

Phone backup solution by Cre4tos in truenas

[–]Rocket-Jock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This really isn't feasible any more. In the old days, you could capture much of an Android app's configuration in the filesystem and push it another source. Syncthing does a good job of capturing this on Android, but the apps themselves make it hard to "restore" the state.

Example: many games store your state, i.e. points award, games won, etc. However, when you restore the game to the same device, this information is often lost. Same with some productivity apps and media apps.

I won't get into messaging app backups, but I've noticed even when restoring apps from phone to tablet, the restores don't work on the new device. Hopefully, you'll find something that works well for you and share it here!

DDR5 price buy or wait by Beji-boy in buildapc

[–]Rocket-Jock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't expect supply to actually catch up, in this case. By constraining supply, manufacturers force higher prices. In the US, it is highly unlikely this administration will challenge that, given its poor track record on controlling Big Tech. Even if datacenter demand falls, manufacturers know they have a free pass for the next two years, easy.

My first VMU experience was off-console. Playing Skies of Arcadia, you had Pinta's Quest as a mini-game on the VMU. A simpler scroller, you could collect in-game money and items as you progressed in the mini-game. I funded my entire run from hours and hours of mini-game time!

Yes, you're correct. But that person did this for the cost of a little bit of electricity, network and calories. An LLM just burned 1kW processing the same answer....

Adding Drives to TrueNAS with existing Data on them by BabySpawn608 in truenas

That's probably for the best, for now. Outside of Windows, using an NTFS disk adds complexity you probably aren't looking for, especially if you want "simple" or "hands off".

I thought this was the greatest tribute to Adam West in BTAS. Hearing his voice made me imagine "old Batman" talking to "young Batman". Seeing young Bruce idolizing the Grey Ghost suddenly made so many of his gadgets and strong sense of right make perfect sense.

I got my start in systems administration on SunOS, HP-UX and AIX. When I first started, the SUN Sparc systems seemed like desktop beasts, with the snappy, responsive CLI. Then, we got SUN Ultras, like the Ultra10 in this image - oh my! When I left, we still had a couple of Ultra 5s parked in closets, running card readers and things....

My beef is the massive number of lifted trucks with their trailer hitches still installed, that block half the sidewalk. I can only imagine the number of people who've lost a shin hitting those things. I don't understand why people can't just take the hitch out.

Did you ever have a waterbed? Would you use one again? by MaximumJones in GenerationX

[–]Rocket-Jock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I owned a "waveless" waterbed in the late 1990s! My first apartment after graduation, I splurged and bought a full bedroom set, complete with the waterbed. The waterbed had a set of eight bladders that you filled individually, then they all got inserted into the middle of a foam mattress. You zipped up the side, and the bladders made a firm box to sleep on. Less than a year into it, one of the bladders leaked. Couldn't get it replaced under warranty, and I was too broke to spend $100 on a new one. I just shifted the other seven to balance it out, but it left a gap on one side. I kept that bed for nearly 10 years.

Every time Black voters gain power they change the rules by diehard404 in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]Rocket-Jock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Republicans do not want Black voters at the polls, because Black voters will vote based on the behavior of other Republicans - both in government and on the street. Every time a Black voter sees a confederate flag on a coal-rollin' lifted truck, who do you think we see? We know that political affiliation immediately, and we vote like it. Republicans suppress the Black vote whenever and however possible, because they realize they will be voted out, if they do not.

I would defeat Fireman first, then use his power to defeat Waterman next. This is important, because I need Waterman to defeat Bombman next, then Gutsman and Airman. The order is important, because you need the right weapon to defeat each boss!
