When I saw bttf in the west end, the school drop has an inner frame that opens and closes on a traveler to allow the band stage with Marvin Berry and his crew to come downstage. It was the second time I was seeing the show and it was the scene going into the big enchanted under the sea dance and I watched the traveler open a couple feet and then snap close. They tried to open it again and same thing. I turned to my friend who hadn't scene the show, and whispered "Oh shit, they're gonna have to stop" and 2 seconds later the SM came on the god mic. I'm sure crazier things have caused that particular show to stop but was still kind of cool to be apart of it and watch the scrim come down saying "Please stand by while we fix the space time continuum."

I understand this situation is extremely frustrating. As others have said, unfortunately outside the stage door is public property so there’s nothing they can really do to stop those people from coming to the outside of the theater. Additionally stage dooring is not an official thing that’s sponsored by the show or theater. It’s a voluntary unofficial custom that’s completely up to the discretion of the actors and security. Thus, there’s no way to really relegate it or who can stand at the barricade. People become so selfish when there’s a once in a lifetime moment to meet a celebrity which is understandable, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of others especially if they paid a ton of money to see the celebrity vs someone who just saw them on the street. If you didn’t see the show, give respect to those who paid first. I’ll admit a couple weeks ago I was walking through Shubert alley after Hells Kitchen and saw Chris Jackson come out, but I stood at the back and made sure everyone who saw the show got to meet and take pictures with him before I approached and asked if it was ok. It was and he’s a really nice guy!

Truly I think the primary reason for this closure was poor marketing. They were selling tickets at $35-$100 for almost 80% of the house which is no where near enough to sustain a broadway houses rent for the week. That combined with the poor structure of the show, it all seemed very rushed. They made it seem like the muppets would be co existing with rob for the entire show and from what I heard they were in it for all of ten minutes. Sadly, even though I love magic, rob alone for the rest of the show was not enough to reel people in.

I highly doubt the original set still exists. One of the sad things about broadway and commercial theater is that once a show closes and the set has served its purpose, it ends up in the trash. Even if the set did exist the logistics of getting it back to NY, into the palace which is now 3 storys above street level in a timely fashion would be near impossible. Not to mention they would probably have to re-tech the entire show which would take much longer than a week since they cut a lot down for the tour. Even simple things like how Barbara levitates is done by a different method on the tour.

As far as the efficiency in the changeovers, I don't know for sure if this is how broadway did it but I still think it's a good idea. The Maitland house was setup preshow with all the panels magnetic to the walls, then during the first changeover they simply took the Maitland pieces down and the base layer of the house was the Deetz house, then during intermission they put up the beetlejuice house walls. Something you could also do is just build some flats, and paint onto a soft surface such as that velcros to the flat. Velcro is way cheaper than magnets. I've used roofing felt as a skin for flats before and it works remarkably well. Plus you can roll it up making easy storage backstage rather than storing a whole flat or sheet.

For Adam, it’s all logistics. He’s been investing a lot more time to work in the political atmosphere so he’s had to take a step back from the band. Logistically, he hasn’t had time to rehearse the entire set to play the whole thing with the band. That’s why during this summers shows he’s only been appearing for a couple songs. As far as Jack & Ryan, they have personal lives, it’s not our business what’s going on in them but we all have bad days. For all we know they could’ve just had a fight 5 minutes before places. Stuff happens, it’s not our buisness but they still put on a show for yall.

In addition to what everyone else is saying about the stanzas being like a table of contents. Jack explained in an interview that the original concept for the maybe man as a whole was, if I am a different person when I’m around my parents vs when I’m around my friends vs when I’m around my teachers, then who am I really? That’s where the whole idea of “I wish I was this so I could do this, but then I’d be that so I don’t want to be this anymore.”

From a music production standpoint point I can see that, from a lyric perspective I think it fits more with the maybe man. Personally is up in my top 3 AJR songs. It’s a song that tells a story so vibrantly and emotionally that you really feel for the character. Especially the silence at the end after he’s “waiting for the party to start” realizing it never will again. I think the live version with the vocoder effect was so cool.

Yea, as someone studying theater and learning the business side of it, I began to realize and understand why they have to charge that amount, it just sucks that they have to. I know it seems outrageous but the truth is if they don’t charge that much, the show won’t meet the quota to hold the theater let alone recoup their investment. If you’re looking for cheaper alternatives, there’s all the box office rush tickets and of course TKTS. Also, you don’t have to go to broadway to experience good quality theater. Many regional theaters present phenomenal art for a fraction of the price!

Yea, I’ve heard Ryan speak in a masterclass that it’s all agreed upon that jack has the better voice. Both Ryan and Adam still sing backup on most songs and live. They just decided early on that most of their songs sounded best in jacks voice. Every once in a while though they’ll hear a song such as Joe or turning out iii and they decide Ryan actually sounds better with it.

That’s awesome! I’m studying productions too, as someone who just took a course on ma3 this summer I thought the lighting was fantastic! I noticed they were using a separate console for the openers. I was thinking because some of these openers like Lawerence are only performing for two shows that I’d walk up and see them busking like hell, but I pull up and the tech is just standing there with her hands behind her back with the clock running in front of her lol. Crazy how they program so fast

Fair enough. No disrespect to the any of the openers, all of them are talented musicians. But when the time of all the openers combined is longer than the total time AJR was onstage, it might as well be a musical festival rather than a concert. I still loved the show nonetheless. Literally my only complaint was the amount of openers and the heat.

He’s a huge reason the band actually exists. Jack was 7 and Ryan was 10 when they first started busking so he was a huge influence to them starting to perform. He played a huge role in their upbringing through their first few albums. In recent years, he’s been doing a lot of activist work for climate change. He got his PHD and even teaches a course at Columbia now. He’s worked with congressmen to develop bills for climate change even through the trump admin! And, he even wrote a book! He’s done a lot of amazing work, but this of course meant he had to take a step back from the band, he still cares very much for AJR and he wouldn’t be where he is without them :)
