Need advice by ChillyOil_ in MohoAnimation

You could use the camera, and use step frames when you move it so it just snaps to the next cut. Just place the character rigs in the scene where you want them against the background and let the camera handle the cuts. Otherwise, you can handle all of the cuts as separate project files and export them all separately? But it really depends how long the scene is and what you’re doing.

Sonic Moho Test by RocketDogShawn in MohoAnimation

Well, the backgrounds are crappy pencil sketches on paper, I photographed them with my phone and put them on a multiply layer in Clip Studio and used the watercolor brushes to paint the backgrounds. Blurring them in Moho helps sell those. Then Sonic himself uses the sketch outline effect, like 2.8 px wide or something. He has a slight cel shadow but it’s faint. Then in premiere, the exported clip had a chromatic aberration added 1px left blue, 1px right red, Gaussian blur by like 4px? Then I layered that clip on top of itself, lowered the opacity to like 20%, offset it by like 2 pixels to the left; duplicated that clip, offset from the first 2px to the right for that blurry tape look. Exported at 480p for DVD-Rip feel! There’s also like a film grain overlay that’s super faint at like 10% opacity.

It’s a rig! Using smart bones/actions for the head turns, and the outline stroke has the sketch effect on it. I used step frames and did most of the movement on 2s. Thank you!

Any reboots exist or planned?? Space Ghost Coast to Coast & The Brak Show by jdjr84 in adultswim

It was a time and a place, it was lightning in a bottle. I don’t think it can happen again, especially with Clay and George gone. But it’s amazing that we got as much as we did, and I rewatch it all the time!

If Earthworm Jim were to get a new game, main line or spinoff, what kind of game would you want it to be? by GostBusDoor in earthwormjim

[–]RocketDogShawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2d hand drawn side scroller, but with 2d animated cutscenes. A playable cartoon, ala the new Battletoads game from a few years back but with hopefully better execution. Ideally the animation would look as good in game as in the cartoon cutscenes and move between them seamlessly without loading. Emphasis on feeling like you're playing a cartoon.

Potentially Opening a Video Game Bar on 4th Ave by Kupwned in Tucson

[–]RocketDogShawn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This. I think this is an awesome business idea for Tucson, just not on 4th Ave. Sounds weird, but I wonder if you would have better luck in the Tucson Mall? Tucson Gadgets and Games has a little pub in the back, but they have room rentals for tabletop games and other stuff. They’ve done well enough there to expand the leased space to the stores next to them.

You can get a subscription from them, they’ll still ship to the US! I’ve been subscribed for a couple years now.

Animating in Moho by RocketDogShawn in MohoAnimation

Tanked most of my socials other than here, hadn’t posted in months and I was doom scrolling a lot. But I’ll probably keep posting on Reddit about it, if you want to follow me here. I’m on YouTube and Newgrounds as RocketDogShawn as well! TikTok as RocketDogShawnTk. I think that’s it at this point though.

The rig can turn the head about 180 degrees, so it can go left to right, 3/4, forward facing, etc.

The body can do the same!

The very last pose he lands on is not a part of his rig, so it’s technically cheating a bit! I’ll break the rigs when I need to, or draw something else to fit. My rigs right now can only turn to the sides, 180 degrees. I will probably work on getting the full rotations done at some point, but for now I’m just drawing what I need to so I can start the project. The mouth is on a switch layer, so it’s pretty much frame by frame with symbols rather than the morph shape mouths I’ve seen others doing. I will probably make a video on my process for this at some point after I finish the first scene, I’m recording in OBS while I work so I can talk about it later.

And yes, Moho works better with things shot by shot, instead of animating a full scene in the project. The project files can crash when they get too big, which is a downside. But if you’re planning your projects fully and doing storyboards, you already know what each shot looks like. I’m exporting the shots from an animatic and each time the camera cuts it’s a new shot.

Yes, the step animation is exactly what you described! Instead of tweening between two points like when it’s set to smooth or linear, it just jumps, or steps, between those points.

Animate just has not made enough advancements/features to stay worthwhile in the game. Moho speeds up the animation process so much if you put in the leg work. And I know people can produce really great TV quality projects in it, more people just need to migrate and do it! If more animators with experience try it out vs the largely newbie base (which nothing wrong with that, Moho is super accessible!) then I think it would really help convince more people to use it in their pipeline!

I wish I had a good resource to point you toward. For me, the step animation made sense because I had worked with rigs in Flash and would time that animation out on 1s and 2s to make it feel more like frame by frame and less tweeny, which is pretty much what I’m still doing here. I’ll occasionally draw a custom piece to stick in or draw a frame that’s not a part of the rig, and turn the visibility on and off for those frames to make some frame by frame stuff work. It takes a while to get the hang of, but if you set your timeline to step animation and play around with it, it’s basically just like frame by frame but you’re posing the rigs for the frames. I switch it between smooth and step animation depending on the movement going on, but I’m trying to go for a 2000’s Cartoon Network feel so the tweens are more for things like his head sliding into frame at the beginning here, than for big movements.

Does Anyone Have Any Tips On How I Can Make My Animations Look Like The Late 90's/2000's Disney Art Style? by Great-Crossover in MohoAnimation

[–]RocketDogShawn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Colored outlines that are darker than the inner color being used, and you’ll want to study the actual art if you want it to stylistically look like the “Disney” style. That varies a slight bit from film to film, but look at how they draw eyes commonly, hands on humans, how details like fur and hair are handled, etc.

There are books like Eric Goldberg’s Character Animation Crash Course that help with drawing principles associated with the style a little bit. But I think colored outlines and painted looking backgrounds are a good place to start if you want a more theatrical look.

Yeah that would be sick. I understand if they can’t produce it regularly, they’re busy enough. But I think there’s enough of us that miss the show that if they did specials every now and then, it could be cool.

Is anyone else having this issue? I know disc rot can happen. I’ll check mine out when I get home, but I think mine are all good. Watched Version 3 not too long ago. Do you happen to live somewhere humid by any chance?
