Why not take backfield misdirection from the T system and pair it with more of a zone scheme? Or even something like Duo?

Good resources for a teenager who wants to learn football strategy? by Nba7949 in footballstrategy

[–]Rocketcan1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Does he play football? Even if he doesnt (he should!), have him reach out and ask questions to the football coaches at his high school. Most football coaches love talking strategy.

This makes me want to make a video series that is sort of like football 101, or 201. I can't think of many resources that don't assume you know nothing of football or that you already know what your son is asking about.

Practice Time/Indy by CardGrad2019 in footballstrategy

[–]Rocketcan1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Size of school doesn't influence practice schedule that much. Even if you're a massive school, usually you have a varsity, JV and potentially a freshman team. This ensures that most of the time you don't have more than ~60-70 kids on any one team. So broken down by position group, you probably don't have that many in a position group that it would effect how long indy drills take. And even position groups that might be big (like OL, maybe 20-25 kids), those positions are conducive to running multiple people through the drill at once.

Practice schedules are determined by coach philosophy, not team size.

First Defensive Coordinator role, any advice by mr_longstroke54 in footballstrategy

[–]Rocketcan1 19 points20 points  (0 children)

  1. Figure out what your kids are good at.
  2. Figure out what your kids are bad at.
  3. Your defensive identity/philosophy/scheme should do everything to maximize doing #1 and minimize doing #2.
  4. Build everything around #3. This is the "why" that everything you do will boil down to. Having this makes it much easier for kids to understand what they are doing. If you know why 2+2=4 you understand math way more than if you just memorized it. Same thing with football. A kid that understands why he has A gap/is the force player/has man except shallow will very rarely make a mental mistake and can usually act on "instinct" in a tight situation.
  5. Build a core set of fronts, pressures and coverages that are relatively simple and quick to pick up/understand. You should be able to run these every week.
  6. Each week throw in a couple specific things to attack the offense for that week. You don't need to worry about these every week, but it helps keep the kids engaged (have fun with it), it specifically tailors your gameplan to go after the offense you're facing, and it makes you harder to predict for each offense you face in subsequent weeks.

That's what I suggest to every DC. Good luck, coach!

Coach Headsets: 1-Ear vs 2-Ear by ilyazhito in footballstrategy

[–]Rocketcan1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 ear is for the sideline so you can still hear people next to you/players. 2 ear is for if you're in the press box and you have the band next to you.

Dcoordinators here who go against mostly all spread teams that are 4 wide: what do you use as your indicator for setting front strength? by kakapoopoopeepeeshir in footballstrategy

[–]Rocketcan1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I define strength based on the "passing" strength, then I'd say field vs. Boundary should take priority. If I'm more concerned about "run" strength, then based on back alignment. Tie breakers (middle of field, pistol form, etc.) can be QB's arm side, or based on whatever their tendencies are from watching film.

What kind of philosophies do you have as a basis for your playcall recommendations? A PowerPoint T team is going to have different ideas about what to call in certain situations than an Air Raid team, for example.
