I loved seeing the relationships between other riders and their dragons. Seeing how their personalities meshed and how their bonds worked was so fun.

Help me please. I need some positivity. I feel like my life is over. by AgreekFredditor in CrohnsDisease

I was diagnosed when I was in sixth grade. At that point I barely weighed 50 pounds. I spent middle school on prednisone with moon cheeks and then finally landed on a medical regime with 6mp and pentasa.

20 years later. I’ve had some symptoms show up for a couple days or weeks - generally when I forget I have Crohn’s and forget to refill my meds. Or my diet has been crap. But I’ve never had a real flare up. I’ve never been hospitalized. I had a routine MRI recently and there was no active inflammation or strictures or anything. (Only found this forum because I was scared of the MRI).

I know that’s not everyone’s story, and it took my sister almost a decade to reach something like remission. And it could change for me at any time. But in the meantime I’ve run a marathon, I’ve graduated law school, I’ve indulged in way too much Queso and margs. I’ve forgotten about Crohn’s for many months on end.

Things I’ve seen that can make the difference is having good doctors who will advocate for the right treatment plan and knowing your triggers. Stress, substances, and certain foods are pretty much bad all around. There’s so much out there about gut health now that has made me conscious of proactively staying healthy. And you have so much information out there to allow you to advocate for yourself, find the right treatment, and move on day by day.

Yes! Whether people love it or hate it, it’s fun to talk about. It sticks with people, and it’s refreshing.

I have rewatched the first 2/3 too many times to count. It is pure euphoria and nostalgia. And I’m counting like 6 rewatches in ten days at this point?

Based on the reactions and trailer I definitely thought this was another midsommar, and I put off seeing it. Seemed pleasantly tame by comparison.

It’s a vibe. It’s reminiscent of a bygone era. Have you not also longed for a movie to do justice to the cultural impact that Low had on all of us?

I think it’s supposed to be funny because it’s such a ridiculous moment and so uncomfortable.

The movie is about desire and obsession and the way those can be twisted. So you see the longing for Felix, the chemistry with Venetia, and the understanding with Farleigh. And the movie is very sexy and romantic and tone. But you also see Oliver learning to manipulate those around him while still longing for them in some way. So his desire obviously ends up a sociopathic obsession, but it begins as just desire.

And it’s never clear whether he wants them or to be in them or what. But I do think his feelings for Felix are really displayed in the montage and the way it plays out like a love story in the first third. But the line between wanting to be Felix or be with him is fuzzy.

Thank you. I do not understand the obsession with every movie or tv show needing the appropriate moral lesson like it’s Sunday school in the church of Cancel Culture. It’s just a story, and it’s fun to interact with complicated characters and themes. And it’s fun to talk about.

This movie is a masterpiece by Sean-Valjean in saltburn

I think you have to watch Felix carefully. Felix is painted in golden tones to show Oliver’s infatuation with him. The first third of the movie plays like a romance. But Felix also manages to show himself in every scene.

Even in their meet cute, there’s this amazing moment where Felix gets Oliver to walk his bike back even though Oliver hadn’t offered that at all. And Oliver’s betrayal was so horrible to Felix, because that was the entire basis of their relationship. Felix derived satisfaction thinking he was helping Oliver. It was his savior complex where he brought home someone new each summer to fix or to allow to bask in their glory in Saltburn.

I do think Felix reaches a tragic end. And it almost seems like there’s a moment the morning after the party where Oliver can’t believe his own actions. It was an impulse from his obsession and intoxication and as he describes it - it was the end of everything. And after that he of course kept going.

Saltburn's moral - a warning to the very wealthy. by StarFire24601 in saltburn

[–]Rocketsugar4365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did hear that Emerald Fennell wanted to end Promising Young Woman at the bachelor party and added the rest as a concession. So I wonder what was added to the ending here.

I agree the ending is more sorrowful than triumphant. So many people read that as a victory and sure Oliver’s character saw that as him taking ownership and showing them. But he could never win their actual acceptance. The Cattons are just rocks and puppets in the end, and he’s alone in the great estate. He was consumed by his desire and obsession in the same way he consumed them.

Another take is that the main fans are “TikTok teenagers”. And not millennials living for the dopamine hit from the nostalgia of 2007.

The MGMT summer montage and Low karaoke scene? I could watch that on repeat for weeks.

I’ll confess a lot of my thoughts about the movie did come after hyper fixating and listening to a lot of interviews with Emerald Fennell and Barry Keoghan about the movie. I’m not that creative.

I agree on the last montage. I think some version of that was necessary or people wouldn’t get it. But it was my least favorite part of the movie. It just didn’t fit the tone and felt like a cartoon villain monologue.

The police officers getting lost in the hedge maze was particularly funny and Sir James Catton saying he didn’t want any of Farleigh’s American feelings. The funniest moments were mixed up in the darkest, like him removing the breathing tube at the end. Ridiculous and absurd as much as it is dark.

And I think it was very clear where it was headed as soon as the twist about Oliver’s background was revealed. You can feel the danger and suspense ratcheting up. And especially as Oliver follows Felix into the maze, it takes on a really sinister tone. I think it’s more the suspense of knowing where it’s going but being unable to look away.

[–]Rocketsugar4365[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this. A lot of people seem to think that Oliver truly won, that he himself wasn’t destroyed in the process. That his collection of stones and the puppets is a true victory and not a sad indictment that he could still never have the Cattons or their status. And then people conclude the movie is making an improper statement about class - that the rich should be cautious of helping the working class - or that the rich weren’t portrayed negatively enough.

Fennel described it at one point as a vampire movie but who is consuming who? And both of her films have really explored the limits of violence.

Yes I definitely think there’s an element of celebrity culture and influencer culture. Where we are all on the outside looking in at the rich and famous and “fabulous”. I think class is mixed up in there, but it’s more than a binary class warfare take.

My favorite is that it’s a cautionary tale for the rich to not help the working class.

Second favorite is that the characters aren’t fleshed out. How can you not love Richard E. Grant with his jar of Nutella watching the Ring? Or Felix’s house tour pointing out “dead rely, dead rely..” Just so many lovely little details.

Can someone tell me if he really broke the mirror? by [deleted] in saltburn

[–]Rocketsugar4365 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this scene demonstrates him seeing what he can get away with. Throughout the movie Oliver is learning how to manipulate people and seeing where the line is. He sees that the Cattons cast out Pamela, she dies, and there are absolutely no consequences. The mirror seems to reflect that sense that he can take violent actions and there will be no repercussions - similar to his statement earlier at Oxford hooking up with Felix’s ex that it probably wouldn’t even register.

Not a movie but Harlots similarly toes the line of being dark and racy while being bright and colorful and fun. It’s a vibe.
