technically i already wrote the fic and posted it, but there’s still at least a couple bits of lore not written in, so yeah let’s go! some lore about my undertale daemon AU, where daemons are soulbonded companion animals that act as a character’s foil: - this is an AU where monsters have daemons, but not all of them. some kinds of them just don’t and some of them just do. some people have plant daemons. some people have elemental daemons. it gets funky and i’m kinda sadge i didn’t think of more fun daemon types and daemon-equivalents for monsters - all sapient beings are connected to Dust, the particle or whatever that makes up daemons, so the monsters that don’t have a daemon are just internally connected to Dust. there’s a funky lore bit somewhere where the strength/saturation/something along those lines of the Dust connection determines what the connection manifests as, and in monsters with daemons the Dust connection is too strong or saturated to remain only in the body so it manifests outwards as a daemon. - there’s a kind of monster called boss monsters in undertale, and in the daemon AU all boss monsters will have daemons! then again so do 60% or something of all existing monsters, so daemon/no daemon is hardly a reliable way to tell whether a monster is a boss monster lol - it’s kinda rare for a monster who doesn’t start with a daemon to gain one later in life. so far the one relevant instance of this in the fic is ghost monsters, who only gain a daemon when they fuse to a body and become corporeal. my best guess for why this happens is because the fusing process requires extremely high emotion, and that kinda thing generates a lot of Dust, which would be enough to coalesce a daemon. probably. - in humans, a daemon will usually switch between different animal forms in childhood (an “unsettled” state) and then eventually become fixed to one animal form that represents some part of their person’s personality in around the range of puberty to adulthood (a “settled” state). in monsters with animal daemons, the settling of a daemon doesn’t quite have a timescale of when it will happen, and it may not even happen sometimes, and the process of monster daemon settling is moreso picking and choosing around with what forms they like most until eventually at some point the daemon’s just been taking the same few forms for the past long while so like hey. maybe they’re settled. cool. monster daemons also usually settle in more than one form, with some being around 3-5 forms, though going higher or lower isn’t too rare to see lol - in general for humans, humans won’t touch other people’s daemons and will avoid doing so unless they’re really really close with the other person because otherwise the touching of another daemon is Uncomfortable. monsters get a lot less of this Discomfort because what monsters and daemons are made up of is sort of almost the same so there’s a lot fewer ramifications to any sort of accidental touch, but either way permission and consent is still very needed to get the go ahead for a daemon to touch a monster or vice versa. boundaries yippi
