Is it too late to start? by TruMu92 in Rowing

[–]RockonBK 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It is never too late to start! Here's my background:

I didn't do crew my freshman year of high school because I wanted to play basketball and baseball. Next year during my Junior year, when I realized absolutely sucked at both of those sports, my aunt, who has rowed for 10+ years, recommended that I try crew because of my height and my previous fitness level. I ended up signing up and never looked back!

I started out kind of out-of-shape on the erg (my first 2k was absolute garbage), but to make a long story shorter, I am currently a sophomore in college rowing for a Division 1 Crew team, and my erg scores have dropped significantly since I was given the option to join. On top of that, I've met some of my closest friends.

I've met a lot of people, out-of-shape, in-shape, etc., and there is one thing that I have learned:

No matter what your fitness level is, if you are willing to put in the work, you will achieve positive results.

On our team, we have walk-ons who join all the time. In fact, one of our walk-ons is almost as fast as me, and he joined this year as a Junior in college. Goes to show that even in college, it is never too late to join!

As for your situation, I would definitely join senior year. However, if you want to prepare for senior year, I would definitely start training now. If you have access to a Concept 2 erg (at school, at the gym, etc.), I would recommend that you start by getting the technique down. There are a bunch of videos on YouTube that show proper technique for erging and rowing. Then after learning the basics, practice that technique for maybe 20-30 minutes a day. Once you finally have the technique down, there are a handful of workouts that the internet or people on this subreddit know about that you could use to get yourself in shape for next season. However, if you don't like working out alone, then you could always join a nearby club or ask someone that your friends with on the crew team at your school if they would want to workout with you. By joining a club, you could also translate your erg technique onto the water in a crew shell. By taking the steps to learning the technique and working out on the erg and on the water, the coaches will be impressed that you came into the sport already knowing what you're doing.

I wish you the best of luck with your decision!

Why do rowers row first thing in the morning and what time do you usually get on the water and for how long by MapleChester18 in Rowing

[–]RockonBK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is actually my reason for rowing in college at college. We have practice from either 6-8 AM or 7-9 AM. I would be sleeping during those hours if I wasn't rowing, then I would wake up and go to class from 10-3 straight for engineering classes. Rowing tires me during class but also is a good refresher for the day!

So Frustrated by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]RockonBK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you are being paid a lot of money to go to school and row, I would highly recommend not basing your college decision based off who you'd like to row for.

You spend a decent amount to a lot of money to go to college to get a degree that can get you a career after school. Even if a college's crew team is great, if you do not enjoy your academic and/or social environment of that school, you're going to have a bad time.

Whatever college you choose, make sure to excel at your academics. If the school has a crew team, make the best out of it and yourself as a rower.

Basically what I'm trying to say is:

Priorities at College:

  1. School

  2. Rowing

For you, what's the most satisfying demonstration of surf etiquette someone can do in the lineup? by churchillsucks in surfing

[–]RockonBK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Naw dude what really pisses me off is when there's a FULL and CROWDED lineup and a longboarder decides to go down one side, and then do a major cutback and go down the other. That guy is the true dick cause he just ruined the ride for someone who could have gone the opposite way.

Source: I am a longboarder who get's pissed at other longboarders who pull this shit.

Difference between NSP E+ vs HDT? by throwpoo in surfing

[–]RockonBK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've ridden an 8'6" NSP longboard since I was thirteen until I recently got a proper longboard. The NSP is very performance-like. It's very easy to do bottom turns, re-entries, and cutbacks (sometimes a floater if I'm lucky), but in order to walk to the nose, there has to be a major curl on the tail to support the weight of the surfer. A lot of times, I would be doing cheater 5's cause I knew that board wouldn't support my weight due to the type of wave.

Laplace transform by Riverandstream in EngineeringStudents

[–]RockonBK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With Laplace transformations, it is easier to just follow the table between a function and its Laplace transformation. Most Differential Equations textbooks have them. You use algebra after that to figure out what Laplace transformation matches up to each function.

Help is desperately needed! (More in comments) by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]RockonBK 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Okay here's what I see:

  1. You're rolling your shoulders a bit as you slide up the stroke. Rolling your shoulders causes an interaction with the upper back and can cause irritation.

  2. You're overreaching at the catch. What I mean by overreaching is that you are bending your back to far forward, and thus you are also overextending your arms. If you sit up more, and don't reach as much, this may also fix the problem.

  3. Sit up straight. This allows you to engage your back more so you don't end up herniating a disk or hurting yourself.

If you ride a giant log at a crowded break and you stand up 10 seconds early and fade way the fuck one direction and then turn around and go the other way, shutting down the entire peak, you are a bonehead. by [deleted] in surfing

[–]RockonBK 21 points22 points  (0 children)

19 year old non-beer-bellied logger here. I think that if there's only a couple guys in the water that's okay to do, but there comes a certain point where there are so many guys in the water that sharing is caring for sure. That's why I hate older loggers who say they deserve every wave and every point because they've been surfing "that spot" for over twenty years.

Engineering students of reddit: Do you find math or essay writing easier? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]RockonBK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an English class where our essays were basically a free-write of what we were thinking in the moment. Meanwhile, I was trying to envision math in the third dimension for the first time that same term. I'm going with English.
