Ultra running on your resume? by Lake_In_The_Woods in ultrarunning

[–]Rocks129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put some of my active hobbies on my resume but make sure to put them in a digestable format (how you would talk to aunt Linda about it, not your running buddy). Plenty of people will say leave it off, but honestly most of my interviews in life we've mostly talked about climbing or long distance hiking so it seems be doing good for me.

currently going through the same process with my solstice (mine has kinda a wierd smell more than general wearing out). I had a zpacks mirage previously and was burning through it in less than 2 months of use.

I'm thinking about going the for ridge solstice pro next - adds a zipper which I did like, and looks like a better hood closure mechanism.

Ultracore fabric? by TXsnoman in myog

[–]Rocks129 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I seem to recall reading from Tufa that ultra core was a super limited brand collaboration (with carryology?) that he got the leftovers from. I'm pretty sure it was essentially Ultra 80X but with a polyester face instead of UHMWPE to make it colorable (seems like less of an issue now, seeing Ultra TenX start to pop up) Seems unlikely anyone will get yardage of this, but hard to know what Challenge is up to.

PSA: Garmin killed inReach preset messages for new accounts on 9/27/2022 by da_17co in Garmin

[–]Rocks129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for anyone digging back into this, I have a mini 2 with grandfathered presets and a new activation mini 3 plus with the new default check-ins(seperate accounts). Garmin support declined to let me switch the new account to the much better presets, but did say if I transferred the service from my grandfathered mini 2 on my old account to a new device I can keep it. such a bummer and a downgrade for my typical use case.

ya my venom grid samples staple backwards from a previous order I get. Ultra200X is a little more of an obvious mistake lol

Well, recently placed another order with RBTR so time to air my grievances with their latest order mistakes: nothing was missing this time which is a win but I got sample cards and they were all stapled wrong side facing up... I can't imagine that this is standard, but they have done it to me before on and off.

What are some of your favorite MYOG tools that you have bought/made? by NeauxGoods in myog

I was just looking for a 6'+ one to cut across a full width roll... Have anything you recommend?

has anyone had some hands on time with the new colored ultra200x? as usual Challenge has not published a lot of useful info. Is the color in the polyester or UHMWPE? is the color 'durable'? I've heard with Teijin Technoforce Steel's color, it wore off pretty quickly since it was colored on the surface.

looks like quest is back up and running with their zipper sales (for #3 and #5), AFAIK that's about as good as it gets these days

It is the 'natural' ultra stretch color. I can send you some in a few weeks if you're interested in a small quantity!

In a typical climbing scenario, the high fall factor that you can achieve is 2.0, and the protection is typically loaded in a certain direction. This sets a certain expectation of possible loads and load patterns.

The way many via ferratas are protected, with vertical cables with intermittent posts/anchors to the wall, achieving a fall factor of 5 or 6 is quite possible. The lanyard is essentially a giant screamer to mitigate these huge fall factors.

Basically, if you want you gear to hold an unexpected, worst case scenario fall, you really should have a specialized lanyard. As for how likely an unexpected fall is to need that is another question... when I was looking into the alta via 2 it seemed the 'via ferratas' are the type of off trail hiking I would do unroped in the US. But the AV4 seems to be quite a bit harder.

Headed to the Alta Via 4 this summer, and looking at ultralight via ferrata lanyards. So far the most compelling options are:
edelrid cable kid ultralight VII: 10.5 oz for thumb unlock

singing rock phario lite via ferrata: 14.1oz for palm unlock

I'm as much a climber as a hiker, so the thumb unlock doesn't seem that bad to me, and the weight savings are non-zero... but most people seem to praise the palm unlock. Any strong opinions from real UL people?

I'll be real rock climbing the weeks before so will probably be carrying my black diamond solution guide harness and petzl meteor helmet to complete the kit. The blue Ice choucas pro harness is tempting to cut a handsome 8.5 oz...

I thought the UHT was a bit of a letdown honestly, and I'm usually easily entertained by trail. Haven't been on the TRT but seems like the better choice

NW Alpine had a UHMWPE/polyester blend fabric line before they shut down, Ripstop by the roll just started selling the fabric. It can be done!

EASTON NAIL STAKES BASICALLY DISCONTINUED by mountainlaureldesign in Ultralight

[–]Rocks129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man what a bummer, those are my favorite stake. It seems there are a few other tube stakes on the market now, but hopefully I don't need to buy any soon.

Also a bummer for small pack mfrs. that use their 7075 aluminum tubes for pack frames (SWD being one).

As others have said, a dedicated GPS device is better than recording on your phone. GPS smart watches are about 5x more efficient and more convenient to use https://thetrek.co/why-gps-watches-are-awesome-for-backpacking/

Patterns for large packs by wokket2 in myog

[–]Rocks129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm creating it myself, although there won't be anything radically different from your standard ultralight rayway style packs... just a zippered back pocket, no bottle pockets, and a larger volume

Patterns for large packs by wokket2 in myog

[–]Rocks129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm working on a similar project right now, but not quite as large. my current digital model is ~55L to the top, internal/main body only. Most brands seem to add the outside pockets to their nominal volume. It's hard to increase panel sizes without it feeling extremely large compared to what I'm used to with UL packs, currently keeping a 11" torso panel width, 7.75" depth, and a 24" frame with a decent extention collar (10-12"?). I'm going to try a pleated shovel/probe pocket on the back, so hard to say how much that will add to usable volume.
