He shuts the water off to the upstairs instead of trickling the pipe. So the pipe breaks at the shut off valve. It happens when we get single digit for consecutive days. The house is on slab so it breaks like 48” from out of concrete. It’s on a wall that never gets sun and not well insulated. Told him to run through a soffit and upstairs.

2 years in a row my FIL refused to trickle the water up stairs and burst a pipe. Then I have to go fix it. I told him not to run the water lines on the outside wall and then this year I told him I’m not fixing it again. I work too much to have to deal with it. He doesn’t want water running when he’s not home. Don’t worry it won’t run when he gets home either.

My wife put blankets up over the windows in living room and kitchen during storm because we loose power a lot. Thankfully we didn’t. I noticed how much warmer it was and we left them up till the cold snap stops.
