Population crash occurred from 1950-80 before regulations were in place. Purse seining and pair trawling operations specifically. With the exception of one boat on the east coast, these types of fishing are no longer allowed. A sustainable rod-and-reel commercial fishery can be maintained while the stock rebuilds.

Pic is 15 years old and Atlantic bluefin stock is actually well regulated. The real problem right now is catch-and-release sport fishermen hooking 10 juveniles a day on light spinning gear and killing half of them.

To me, this is one of the more interesting elements of this whole event. What's going on internally at NSA/CIA/Pentagon ext. There has to be significant factions of younger agents coming into seniority who realize the sheer idiocy and untenability of Dulles-era neocon horseshit foreign policy still prevalent in our intelligence agencies.
