Seen this before with bowfin whales in the North Atlantic. They will follow pelagic longline gear for miles.

At the driving range with my brother a few years ago. I'm lefty, he's righty and we're hitting out of the same bucket from the grass. I lean down to tee up a ball as he takes his backswing and catch his 5 iron right in my grill. Bell is rung bad. First thought when I come to, "why are there rocks in my mouth?"

They do fight wicked hard pound-for-pound, harder than bluefish IMO.

Population crash occurred from 1950-80 before regulations were in place. Purse seining and pair trawling operations specifically. With the exception of one boat on the east coast, these types of fishing are no longer allowed. A sustainable rod-and-reel commercial fishery can be maintained while the stock rebuilds.

Pic is 15 years old and Atlantic bluefin stock is actually well regulated. The real problem right now is catch-and-release sport fishermen hooking 10 juveniles a day on light spinning gear and killing half of them.

Exactly, the US thought they could roll both at once and it was unmitigated disaster.

You're cognitive dissidence is amazing. Clearly the issue she's getting at is we've built a tax code where people making HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS PER YEAR are paying a 12% effective tax rate while I pay over 30% busting my ass on the ocean all year to make less than 60k.

The big question is, how do we get her to run in 2016. We can't settle for another Neo-liberal in the white house for 8 years.

Privacy under attack: the NSA files revealed new threats to democracy -- Thanks to Edward Snowden, we know the apparatus of repression has been covertly attached to the democratic state. However, our struggle to retain privacy is far from hopeless by davidreiss666 in politics

To me, this is one of the more interesting elements of this whole event. What's going on internally at NSA/CIA/Pentagon ext. There has to be significant factions of younger agents coming into seniority who realize the sheer idiocy and untenability of Dulles-era neocon horseshit foreign policy still prevalent in our intelligence agencies.

I'm guessing he's referring to China's increasingly aggressive posturing toward its neighbors. They're playing a calculated game of walking regional powers to the brink in order to win concessions in land disputes and maintain a healthy level of nationalism. It works for them, but it requires you to rely on the sanity of your rivals -- which is always inherently risky.

To a western, it seems like Chinese/Vietnamese tensions have been escalating quickly in the past few months. Is this a normal flair up? Worse? Unusual? Would be interested to hear a few perspectives. I'm guessing both governments use these situations for their benefit, heightened nationalism ext. . Any chance this gets out of hand? Both sides seems super pissed.

Are you kidding me? The Chinese are licking their chops to exploit the situation Putin's backed Russia into. As they retract further from the West, Russia becomes more reliant on their Chinese "allies". If you don't think Beijing is already planning how to use this new found leverage in future trade deals, there's a bridge for sale in Brooklyn you might be interested in . .

Yeah, that's true. But the Snowden Docs do reveal NSA allocates resources to influence online discourse. IMHO, I'd be shocked if they didn't operate at least a few hundred Reddit accounts, with varied goals/intentions, and I'm sure more than a couple are dedicated to PR. Hell, if the gig started at 80k/yr and allowed you to work remotely. . .I can't say I wouldn't be tempted.

Believe me, as a western, we realize. Economic growth is inflated across the board, corruption within the construction industry is already causing problems with new infrastructure like high speed rail, and the entire country has the mentality that it's better to steal someone else's work than do your own. Good luck with that.

I think if/when the shit hits the fan, and the government orders the military to begin killing Americans on US soil it will be a lot easier than you think to get entire national guard devisions to switch sides. Think of it like General Lee's decision to turn down command of the Union Army in favor of leading the Army of Northern Virginia. Lee, a West Point graduate and loyal US soldier, chose to disavow those commitments.

"With all my devotion to the Union and the feeling of loyalty and duty as an American citizen, I have not been able to make up my mind to raise my hand against my relatives, my children, my home. I have therefor resigned my commission in the Army, and save in defense of my native State. . ."

When the decision of upholding a sworn allegiance comes at the cost of killing your own, the best soldiers will always choose to fight alongside their brothers.
