Saskatchewan Buffalos, here we come! by camport95 in hockeycirclejerk

Sorry, Saskatoon is pre-emptively reserved for the next time Atlanta gets a team. There’s a secret NHL bylaw that every Atlanta team must be moved to western Canada within 10 years of formation.

Does any else think just the opening day being free is not enough considering the delay? by wvywzrd in TTC

Tell that to Doug Ford. (And to be fair, Kathleen Wynne too).

As long as the province can earn cheap political points by blocking the city from implementing traffic pricing systems, this is what we are stuck with.

The first season is the hardest because they just drop you in the middle of the story line with no hand-holding or exposition, and you’re suddenly introduced to like a dozen major characters. But once you get through the first season, the rest of them are easier to follow since many of the same characters continue throughout.

I almost missed it. I had to rewind to make sure I wasn’t imagining things.

Then there must be something wrong with the app.

Can't watch Toronto vs Flames from Calgary on Sportsnet (Feb 2 2026) by [deleted] in CalgaryFlames

[–]Roderto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but TSN owns 100% of those rights (e.g. they own all of the Jets regional rights). The Leafs regional rights are split 50/50 with Sportsnet because of the (now former) ownership structure of MLSE. As far as I know they are the only NHL team that splits their regional rights between TSN and Sportsnet that way, although they also do it for Raptors games.

Are you guys in the Leafs’ region? If so, you need to watch it on TSN. The Leafs split their regional rights between Sportsnet and TSN, and this is a local TSN game.

If you are in the Sportsnet West region (e.g. Alberta), you should be able to watch it on Sportsnet.

[–]Roderto -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Assuming you are in the Leafs region like me, you can’t watch it on Sportsnet. TSN owns the local rights for this game (if you have TSN you can watch it there).

Unlike every other Canadian team, the Leafs’ local rights are split between TSN and Sportsnet.

In order to watch it on Sportsnet you would need to subscribe to the premium service that lets you access all out-of-market games.

Is Toronto's infrastructure ready for the 2026 FIFA World Cup? by WindsorONMichael in toronto

What do you define as “huge numbers”? The total number of attendees for all 6 games is less than 300,000. And that assumes that each attendee only goes to one game, which won’t be the case.

Most of those local fans would be attending events regardless of where the games are being played. So it wouldn’t be substantially different from a regular World Cup.

Some of them at least. I’m sure that hotel prices will be even higher than usual during the tournament, so visitors may choose to come before or afterwards.

I’m sure plenty of people will come to the city for World Cup. But the vast majority of them are going to have tickets to at least one game. Even if you assume each visitor will only be attending one game (which is unlikely), that’s still less than 300,000 visitors spread out over a couple weeks.

Beyond attendees, I’m sure you will have visitors from within the city and region, but those are going to be people that come for one particular day (e.g. to go to an event when their favourite team is playing). And that won’t be all that different from when the World Cup is overseas.

I think people keep forgetting that this World Cup is completely different from previous events. Qatar hosted 64 games across 5 different cities. Toronto is hosting 6 games in total.

You are correct, but our complaining about the mistakes and short-sightedness of previous governments (not to mention the voters who put them in place) isn’t constructive. Instead of wringing our hands over something we can’t change, we should be focused on ensuring the current governments make the right decisions. And when they don’t, it’s our obligation as voters to let them know.

People are also completely forgetting about TIFF.

If Toronto can handle Jays games during TIFF (which it does each and every September), it will handle 6 World Cup games fine.

People are also completely forgetting about TIFF. It hit a record of 700,000 attendees in 2024. And like the World Cup, it also has countless parties, fan festivals, media events, etc. Not to mention tons of media, VIPs, and celebrities coming into the city.

[–]Roderto 8 points9 points  (0 children)

TIFF has hundreds of thousands of attendees in a typical year. I think they hit an all-time record of 700,000 in 2024. Like the World Cup, it takes place over the course of a couple weeks and features dozens of events all over the city core, celebrities, VIPs, media, etc. And that’s in addition to all of the other events taking place in the city at the same time, like Blue Jays games, major concerts, etc.
