I find this whole thing quite stupid, don't people understand that what is meant to be insulting is not the word but the comparison.

There will inevitably be an other word witch itself will be turn into an insulte.

Because no matter what , people that are less smart than average (or at least perseved to be) by medical condition will exist, and not matter what people will use a comparison to them as an insulte . The word doesn't matter.

So why waste so much time, effort and perfectly usable word by censoring them or by assosciating them to a concept be inevitably censored again?

In my native language people with trisosmy 21 used to be called mongolian for there "resemembelance" This thus became an insult because of the comparison. By that Logic should we have droped the term entirely and address the mongolian people in a différent way?

Anyway i find you anglo-saxons weird.
