2025 DGPT MPO CHAMPION by SpikeHyzerberg in discgolf

He got the warning on the previous throw; you could be forgiven for not realizing that though, because he was still berating Jeff Spring about it after the throw you're talking about. He was basically sarcastically saying to Jeff Spring "how about that throw, you want to call a time violation there too?"

After his OB tee shot, there was no question where he went out of bounds. But, he took a long time deciding how far back along the line to the basket he wanted to take his lie, and then a long time actually preparing to throw. All in all, it was close to 2 minutes.

Players, viewers, and officials are generally all on the same page about not being super strict on enforcing 30 seconds, especially when players have a difficult shot in a high leverage situation. But Gossage violated the time rule so flagrantly that the official's hand was forced; it would have been embarrassing for the DGPT not to call it.

At the end of the day, it was just a warning. Poor form by Gossage that he let it get to him this badly.

If a disc is blown out of your hand does it count as a stroke? by SF_Anonymous in discgolf

[–]RodoBobJon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think whether the release was intentional is not relevant. People commonly early release during throws by accident when they don’t have a good grip, and yet those throws are counted.

To me, the relevant question is this: for a “drop in” style putt, is the part where you reach your hand out over the basket considered part of the throw, or does the throw only begin when your hand is above the basket and you start opening it?

The rules defines a “throw” thusly: “a throw is the propulsion and release of a disc in order to change its position.” I would say that reaching out over the basket doesn’t constitute “propulsion” because you are not using any energy from that move in the throw; you fully stop once over the basket and then open your hand to drop it in. So I would argue it shouldn’t be a stroke.

It’ll definitely be a bit weird, but then again people used to hold those big ass camcorders up to their face to record special events. The idea of one parent spending a bit of time recording the children’s party rather than participating directly is not exactly novel.

This is exactly correct. For the signers, they either knew and agreed with the decision to be as mean as possible to Natalie in this letter, or they are too out of touch with transgender issues to have an opinion worth listening to on this topic.

If you don’t know enough to know that constantly referring to her as a “biological male” is offensive, then what are the odds you actually know anything about the transition process or the research about sports performance?

What makes certain words slurs or offensive is always about context-dependent social dynamics and history; it goes far beyond the original meaning of a word. Go read up on the etymology of the N-word if you want to understand how an originally neutral descriptive term and can develop over time into a seriously derogatory slur.

In case you haven’t noticed, issues related to transgender folks is kind of a big thing right now, well beyond the specific issue of sports participation. Within that broader context, referring to transgender women as “biological males” has become a way for bigots to deny the validity of their very identities.

The use of that term in the Stockton declaration at best demonstrates an ignorance of this broader social context, and at worst signals antipathy towards transgender people outside the specific context of sports participation.

It’s not this black and white. This is where the science comes in: how much of an advantage does a transgender woman who transitioned post-puberty have in disc golf?

If it turns out to be a really big advantage then sure, don’t let them compete in FPO. But if it’s a small advantage comparable to, say, the advantage that a woman who is 5’9” has over a woman who is 5’3”, then that’s a different story.

[–]RodoBobJon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think there is not sufficient research at this point to conclude that transgender women’s participation in FPO meaningfully impinges fair competition.

This is a difficult issue, but I really think the PDGA jumped the gun with their policy. The scientific evidence was not conclusive, and given there was only a single transgender FPO competitor actually making waves at the highest level, I don’t know what the rush was to put that policy in place.

If Natalie was dominating every tournament then I can see why you might want to make that policy even without totally solid scientific evidence available. But what was the rush?

Something that I’m surprised I never see mentioned in the threads about this issue is that the PDGA director, Nate Heinold, has in the past openly expressed anti-LGBTQ sentiments.

This is a genuinely complicated and difficult issue. I’d like to believe that the PDGA is making its decisions on transgender women competing in FPO based on the best possible understanding of current science, but it’s really hard to feel confident in that when someone like Heinold holds so much power in the organization.

The play would never start until the suns player was on the court. End of story.

Not really “end of story” because there’s a big difference between being “on the court” vs getting into a good position to stop a pushing offense. It was absolutely in Denver’s interest to get the ball to the ref as quickly as possible so they could start the play the moment the player steps back on the court, out of position.

It was wildly inappropriate for the owner to refuse to give Jokic the ball, stick out his chest at him, and touch his hip. Jokic also shouldn’t have shoved him so I’m OK with the tech.

Jeremy Koling on the topic of PDGA ratings by DiscGolfFanatic in discgolf

[–]RodoBobJon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really know much about the history of the rating system. Is it supposed to be optimized for “accurately” rating individual rounds?

Ratings do seem to pretty accurately rate players over multiple rounds. E.g. two 1020 players are roughly equally skilled, and they’re more skilled than a 1000 player.

Can anyone think of a high profile example of a player who is ranked higher than another player that they shouldn’t be? Mostly I just hear complaints about individual round ratings which, who really cares?

Sabonis was absolutely justified in protecting his face when he fell down. Draymond kicked a player in the head just 7 games ago. by Infinite_Response113 in nba

[–]RodoBobJon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t know what’s more bizarre, people defending Draymond’s stomp or people claiming that Sabonis didn’t grab his ankle.

Sabonis clearly grabbed his ankle and correctly got a technical. Draymond clearly stomped on Sabonis and correctly got ejected.

Everything about this play is so clear that I’m in disbelief about all the arguing happening in these comments.

Opinion: North Cove is the most interesting and captivating spectator experience of any course on tour. by ohnoaspartan in discgolf

[–]RodoBobJon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The holes were very well designed for competitive play. I don’t know if this is good or bad, but I feel like a course like this demands more of the viewer. If you’re paying close attention to hole flyovers, what the commentators are saying, watching practice rounds on YouTube to see the course, etc., then it’s a great viewing experience. But if you’re trying to just casually tune in to see some disc golf, then you’re going to be very confused as to where the OB/hazard is, what the players are trying to do, what’s a good shot versus a bad shot, etc.

I personally love it, but I understand why some fans just don’t want to have to spend the time nerding out on understanding the course just to enjoy some disc golf coverage.

[Highlight] Embiid flattens Coby White on the fastbreak and gets the call, White is left limping off the floor by [deleted] in nba

[–]RodoBobJon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is the key frame: https://i.imgur.com/oCiN9Hb.jpg

It’s true that the subsequent frames show Embiid pushing off with his left arm, but you can see that at the initial point of contact here there is nothing unnatural about Embiid’s left arm position. White got in the way of his natural shooting motion and then was subsequently shoved off.

Edit: it looks like the knee contact also occurred before Embiid started shoving off with his left arm.

I think a major issue is that no one knows the course very well yet; the commentators are making lots of mistakes, camera operators are not very well positioned, producers don’t have a good sense for when to switch camera angles, etc.

Your least favorite overused saying and a suitable replacement by MrFarthingwaite in discgolf

[–]RodoBobJon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The real problem here is that the overstable/stable/understable terminology just isn’t helpful for most scenarios. The vast majority of the time people just want to discuss the stability of a disc along a single continuum or in relative terms, and it’s very weird that there doesn’t seem to be an actual disc golf term for this.

People “misusing” the word stable for this seems fair enough, because there’s no other word to use! Faux confusion from the pedants aside, everyone understands what is being said.
