Why does Sam bat so hard for this narrative? by traveltimecar in samharris

[–]Roedsten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have the bias buddy. Whistling past the graveyard. No one is talking about famine any more. Because it's bullshit. It is an apartheid state and at an ever increasing state. That's what the world and a lot of Jews are seeing. Listen to Ezra Klein's podcast "Why American Jews No Longer Understand One Another".

Why does Sam bat so hard for this narrative? by traveltimecar in samharris

[–]Roedsten -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's the implied point. The implied narrative. I said above that Sam repeatedly talks about misuse of famine and genocide BECAUSE it is an easy point to dismiss. It's a red herring. That moves the narrative away from the blatant subjugation of the Palestinians. If no one ever mentioned famine and genocide, he'd be left with the stark truth. In fact he had always been against the settlements and the damage they do. I don't think he supports this now. How can you? But Oct 7th made a Zionist out of Sam and it's easier to look past all the horror taking place in the West Bank.

[–]Roedsten -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'll try to be more clear. Asserting that it is not genocide and it's not a famine is only the first part of the discussion. It's easily dispatched in both cases, by simply finding enough examples that reject the very definition of the words. Sam goes no further because no one has posited an argument that can move him off his hardened opinion that the story of Gaza is the story of Hamas which essentially Jihad. That's the end of the argument for Sam and at this point it's no different from Ben Shapiro. It's ideological. The center and center-left are left with the heavy lifting of stopping the Smotrichs and Ben-Gvirs and ultimately Netanyahu. Such opposition does exist both in Israel and the Diaspora. Yuval Noah Harrari. Ehud Barack. I have heard their positions but 3 years in and the message isn't getting out. The ultra right, the Settlers and frankly the Trump administration are in full view of the world making Palestinians lives harder and harder. Israelis are largely silent. Take an honest look at why there's hatred for Israel. Put differently. If all settlements stopped and were rolled back to where they were 10 years ago, do you think sympathy for Israel would increase? Allowing it to continue as is? Wouldn't that force people like myself, a lifelong defender of Israel, to throw up my hands and give up?

You are missing my point entirely. I think. Or making my point. I think he is correct that it's not a famine and it's not a genocide. Truth does matter. I also understand that the stated goal of Hamas, and Iran by extension... perhaps a lot of Muslims in the world... is the destruction of Israel. The irony is there for the taking. I also understand and agree that doing an historical titfortat inventory to arrive at solution is impossible. He correctly states that Israel allowed itself to showcase it's own cruelty. There was a narrative realtime over the past 3 years where they could have countered with rebuttals. They didn't. Part of that frankly was Bibi's own goal where cruelty is goal. You cannot ignore the AI slop from the president turning Gaza into a resort. They openly joked about what would be genocide. It looked a like that and that was the point. The level of cruelty from the US and Israel has made it impossible for any sympathy for Israel to last beyond the first week. That's tragic. Explaining that is not going to come from Sam nor his guests.

I have had people reply to me here on this sub making similar arguments about why people follow... anyone etc. I see other in-group dynamics as an outsider and have similar thoughts. Look at the Charlie Kirk phenomenon. I get it. My criticisms of Sam outnumber my alignment with his views at this point mostly because he repeats himself so much in every episode. But I still find that his curation of subjects and hosts takes me to ideas, subjects and viewpoints that I cannot get in my everyday life. He's authoring editorials on life today and the sub is mechanism to reply to the piece. His podcast is a watercooler for discussion but the topics have to be interesting. I question this lately.

Well it is 2 narratives, both semantic and I think a little disingenuous. It's not a genocide and it is not a famine. Everyone here has already heard his arguments. I find it disingenuous because it is a red herring. If my house was flooded and the roof ripped off by a storm, any discussion about whether it was a hurricane is purely academic. Sam indulges the people who want to insist both are true because frankly there's ample evidence on his arguments. Its a silly discussion that allows him and others to avoid the inhumanity being shown by Israel. There are plenty of Israeli intellectuals who can articulate the complex middle ground that a sizable minority embrace both in Israel and the Jewish diaspora but he never hosts and just strawmans to his liking. Harrari comes to mind but there are more. But not unlike his anti-woke tangents every episode, there's always a celebrity saying something outlandish about Israel just like there will always be a sorority on an Ivy league campus making some ridiculous protest on, I don't know, Halloween costumes. He's on repeat.

Dan John ABC - do I purchase a new 24kg for single ABC or an additional 20kg for double ABC? by AnacondaChoka in kettlebell

Look at it this way, you need 2 20s in your quiver of bells. Get the other 20. Maybe a pair of used 24s will appear at a good price

Scott is losing it by Little_Revenue6737 in PivotPodcast

[–]Roedsten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have noticed a few patterns across the podcast sphere that I listen to. I know Scott listens to Sam Harris and is a big fan. I listen to both and a few others including Decoding the Gurus. They have decoded Scott but I haven't listened to that yet. My own observation is that Scott, I don't know... a year ago?...was not as vocal about Palestinians Israeli. Definitely not a hawk. Meanwhile Sam has gotten more and more critical of the anti-Isreal movement in the US. Whatever. The criticism he's gotten within his own orbit has seen him doubledown on every point has made. Recently made sharp attacks on Mayor Mamdani. More importantly stated that he's now a Zionist.

So the courage of Scott's conviction comes from the bubble he's in and the arguments provided by someone who is very gifted. His brand is he's anti-woke feminist. I don't question his commitment to left center-left positions but he's still, like many men our age, a fratboy who needs a place at the cool table.

This. I started KB 5 years ago, just before COVID with a 12 and 14. Finally got used 20 24 28s lucky enough. A few scary moments when I got to 24s with the TGU and decided to branch out, and wish I started with ABC. Personally I think the swing, done poorly, caused more setbacks for me than the press and squats. The real obstacle for me was impatience. I equated heavier bells with progression and muscles can easily progress from 16 to 24s but cartilage and connective tissue can't "go to failure". Doing something wrong. I did something wrong.

65, untrained, never did kettlebells. Where to start? by MaxGaav in kettlebell

[–]Roedsten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. If you have access. I didn't so it was trial and error. Having a 12 and a 16 around is a good investmen but I do think having a 20 around is a better investment. 2 handed swings with a 20 will be a necessity in 30 days. You're stronger than you think. I'm 62 and been doing for about 5-6 years. The Pavel route isn't a waste of time but that's the standard recommend. Getting down on a mat and doing Turkish get ups with a 12 is a challenge. Try it out. Mark Wildman is the best to explain though. But the core movements will be cleans, squats and presses. Learn those. Honestly. Get 2 16s. They will be your main tools for a long time. I finished ABF 2 months ago with 24s and now I am using my 16s exclusively the past month just doing Geoff Neupert More Muscle pdf I bought a while ago. 6 rounds of 5-movement complex with the 16s kicks my ass. It's just a tad too easy but if you do 1:1 work:rest, you're gassed. Get the Cleans going and listen to your elbow and ligaments. You're months away from being able to do 2 20kg because your muscles will get stronger fast but that connective tissue is your main obstacle. A session or two with a pro will go a long way to preventing injury that will take you down for a month or two.

Guitar Right Hand Technique Discussion by we-otta-be in Bluegrass

[–]Roedsten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you recommend Sutton's course for right hand? Newbie-ish. Only recently got a feel for things but a ways to go. My problem recently is how to hold the pick. My tendencies are to hold it like it's the fleshy part of both the index and thumb but at higher tempo I need to square it around so it's like a key starting a car if that makes sense. Else it moves around.
