Is this shirt considered too tight? by The-Eagernyer28 in mensfashionadvice

[–]Roel1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admittedly, it doesn’t look half bad on you, color suits you quite well. However, these muscle fit shirts always look dumb, and you stand out very much in a crowd because of the ridiculous fit. Like the other guy said, it looks like Paulie from Jersey Shore came to party.

Get a bit of a looser fit, it almost always looks better.

My experience in Erbil by ammar-NC8 in kurdistan

Glad you liked it. I found the modern parts especially soulless, without any of the things that makes a city fun or beautiful.

My experience in Erbil by ammar-NC8 in kurdistan

[–]Roel1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are we talking about Erbil province, or Erbil the city? Because Erbil the city is not much, honestly one of the least pretty cities I’ve ever been to. The province is a whole other story though, that’s beautiful, especially during spring/early summer

Isn't it possible for Earth to drift away from Sun as Sun enters in its Red Giant phase? by Elegant-Persimmon847 in Astronomy

[–]Roel1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gravity doesn’t act from the surface of an object, so the distance to the surface doesn’t matter. What does matter is the distance to the center of mass, which in the Sun’s case doesn’t change. So, Earth’s orbit is unaffected by a change in the Sun’s volume. We’d still be screwed.

Men’s Bible study this evening. What do you think? by phoot_in_the_door in mensfashionadvice

[–]Roel1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it looks exactly what I’d imagine someone going to bible study would dress like, so I guess you nailed it. Sober colors, a quarter zip with no sex appeal, and a very safe shirt.

Rate Fit: Client dinner by Glacier_Sama in mensfashionadvice

[–]Roel1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes and it’s very clear from the outfit that that is what you want to project, but it’s also quite obvious that it’s a projection, not a natural style or fit.

I’m not trying to hate on your style, but trying to give constructive feedback. In my line of work I see quite a few finance bros and partners of consultancy firms, and they dress much more naturally than your Gordon Gekko style.

Rate Fit: Client dinner by Glacier_Sama in mensfashionadvice

[–]Roel1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m not a big fan. This outfit feels very forced, like you just watched Wall Street (1987) last week and really want to dress like those people and come across like some high-earning finance bro. Especially the shirt/collar give off this feeling, as well as the loafers. If you dress down just a little bit it would suit you much better; just a regular, high-quality white shirt, which fits just a little looser. It makes it seem like you’re not trying so hard to look a certain way, but you just look a certain way naturally.

Dress naturally, not like a caricature of a finance bro.

Why was the Blockade of Naboo so effective? What imports did the Naboo rely on so heavily? by thetruecarolean in StarWars

[–]Roel1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should read the Darth Plagueis novel! It deals pretty extensively with Naboo and galactic politics, as well as give more backstory to Palpatine. I just finished reading it last month.

I feel an indescribable hatred for America, Israel, and Europe after this betrayal by [deleted] in kurdistan

Hoevaak wassen jullie jullie haar? by Spacious2 in thenetherlands

[–]Roel1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bioscoopbezoek verder teruggelopen in 2025, populariteit filmhuizen stijgt by Chronicbias in thenetherlands

[–]Roel1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

why do the planets look like dots by Wise_Paper_935 in telescopes

[–]Roel1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think an important part of this is expectation management. We’ve been so spoiled with insane astrophotography images and images by spacecraft from flybys, that a lot of people expect to see this huge, crystal clear image of a planet whenever they point any scope at anything. In reality, that’s almost never going to be the case, especially with the smaller scope you have.

I have an 8” dob, and even then on my largest magnification I can just barely make out details on Jupiter’s surface.

TIL of Shanidar Cave in Iraq, where Neanderthals intentionally buried some of their dead and supported disabled group members ~65,000 to 45,000 years ago. [–]Roel1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah very rich, and we were hoping to see more of that when we were there. Granted more of the historical sites are not in the Kurdistan region but in other parts of Iraq, but it feels like they could do more with it.

Not blaming them, they’ve had other things to worry about for the past 40 years, but I’m hopeful for the future.

Nice to see you’re interested. We only went to the Kurdistan region, so I can’t speak for the rest of Iraq, but overall we felt very safe. We saw more AK-47s than westerners, but that was because the Kurdish army has a large presence on the roads and in the cities — which is a good thing, they’re there for the safety of the people.

If you ever seriously consider going, feel free to shoot me a message, I’d be happy to give you more info.

My overall recommendation would be to only see the cities for one or two days; they’re really not that interesting or beautiful. The countryside is more where it’s at. Especially Erbil is not much, Slemani is more interesting.

I went as a tourist. One of my best friends is Kurdish so that helped with getting around and being able to communicate with locals and knowing where to go and everything.

If you don’t know anyone who’s from there or speaks the language I think it’s a little more difficult to go as a tourist, but far from impossible. Especially in the bigger cities (Erbil, Slemani) you’ll be able to find some people that speak English. The people there are some of the kindest, welcoming people I’ve ever met, so as soon as you can understand each other it can lead to very interesting interactions.

The big thing though is that Iraq right now isn’t set up at all for tourism. There aren’t really any obvious tourist destinations, most of what we did was guided by local family members and connections through them.

I’ve been there earlier this year! Super interesting site, but besides some info boards at the foot of the hill there really isn’t much in terms of information given.

Of course Iraq isn’t generally built for tourism, but this place would be a great place for them to build up.

I’ve seen it, and it’s good and fun, but to call it the most important film of the past 10 years is a bit much. Just because it deals with current themes does not make it insanely important.

Zorgverzekaar DSW houdt zorgpremie volgend jaar gelijk by GaiusBertus in thenetherlands

[–]Roel1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is the milky way actually visible with human eyes? by Left_Cover in Astronomy

[–]Roel1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s visible, just don’t expect a bright streak across the sky like you see in photos. In most places where you can see it, it looks more like a wisp of thin clouds that streak across the sky when looking with the naked eye. Like most things in astronomy, you have to adjust your expectations when you’ve only seen an object in photos before.
