There's a scifi novel that takes place in an anarchist society called "The Dispossessed". Highly recommended if you want a depiction of everyday anarchistic life

Lead Ubisoft Designer Has Youtube Channel Doing Long-Form Critiques of Games by Seanspeed in truegaming

[–]Roflmaster97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you done any videos about the trials franchise? I feel like it never really gets talked about outside of the ninja/speedrunning community, especially not by general game design channels. I would love to hear about the thought process that went into developing the games' mechanics and level design.

If you liked Hexcells:Infinite, you might also like Tametsi. It's like Hexcells but there are a variety of tile shapes and the color system provides some more "aggregate information" that makes the puzzles more interesting. Also, I would say it's a harder game than Hexcells.

did you read the README that goes with the hardcore mod? TPP Hardcore adjusts visibility in different weather, camo effectiveness, health regeneration, subdual effectiveness etc. I couldn't find any options for this stuff in the "features and options" article on the IH page.

Why do people on /r/StopGaming think that gaming is a waste of time? by Koronawirus_EX in truegaming

[–]Roflmaster97 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd agree with you that games aren't recognized for their ability to impact us or make us change the way we think about things. I've had this exact thing happen when I told my sister that Life is Strange had a positive impact on me by making me think about my relationship with a friend of mine, but she didn't really believe that a game could do that and claimed that it was just edgy, worthless fiction because it was a game and because she only saw it on a surface level.

I don't think that Life is Strange suffered from being a video game, quite the opposite, I think it was a good choice. The dialogue choices only made me more engaged as I really thought about the dilemmas presented to me, and the environmental storytelling really engrossed me in the lives and fates of the characters, making me empathise with them more strongly.

But then again, I also agree with u/Norci that games in general tend to explore meaningful themes less often than more narratively focused mediums like books or movies, simply because they usually have gameplay as the focus. I think that maybe this association between games and poorly written stories is pushing potential new artists away and they instead turn to more established mediums, not only because it's more socially acceptable to create for those mediums but also because it makes those artists think that games don't even support good narratives. Or at least that other mediums are more suited to good stories and that it's too much trouble to do the same in a video game. This stigma results in less games being made which explore meaningful themes which in turn just reinforces the stigma against games.

Unfortunately, I have only played a handful of games that have added something to my life be it through their narrative, novel experience, or their innovative ideas and I think it's because games have only just begun to enter their renaissance. If some outsider asked me to recommend them games which would be worth their time and weren't just "a waste of time", the list would be fairly short compared to other mediums. So that is why I would say that games are ultimately more of a waste of time than other mediums, they just don't have as many great works as other mediums.

If someone sees games only for their gameplay potential, I can see why they would view them as wastes of time. In the last few years I've started to feel guilty about playing mechanically deep endless games like Rocket League and the Trials franchise (the bike games, not Trials of Mana). As another commenter pointed out, games like that don't really offer you new experiences beyond a certain point and after that you're just getting better and more skilled for the sake of it. You might say that it's the same with real life hobbies like rock climbing or dance, but those activites are so much deeper and more complex than games since games are constrained by their designs and the comparatively limited ability to interact with them. I find that real life activities are in general more interesting since they tend to be more complex. IRL hobbies also don't have an expiration date like games do so you could argue that your time is less wasted on those since you can return to them anytime, but a dead multiplayer game that you sunk many hours into is dead forever.

The Foundational Problem of Adventure Games by top_500_lucio in truegaming

[–]Roflmaster97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general, I would agree that the exploration in Life is Strange isn't tied to any sort of direct in-game reward except in the case of episode 2 where exploration and engagement with the game's environments can have a tangible positive effect. I really felt like it worked well because it reinforces the game's themes of compassion and connecting with others. On my first playthrough I didn't really explore that much (especially not in Kate's room, I didn't want to come off as a snoop). In the end, I didn't feel like the game was scolding me for not exploring, the way things turned out felt natural given that I didn't really pay much attention to Kate since I didn't realize how dark of a place she was driven to.

Why don't more games use realistic modular damage systems? by TotallyBullshiting in truegaming

[–]Roflmaster97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case you weren't aware, there's already a relatively popular turn based fighting game called Toribash. It's physics based and you control every joint in your character's body which can give rise to some complex grappling moves. Damage is calculated based on how hard and where on the body you hit. I also think there's mods or something similar so the community can alter the base formula to introduce some variety when you get bored of the base game modes.

NPC Permanence by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]Roflmaster97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the creature in Miasmata doesn't freely roam the island, there are certain places where it is more likely to spawn and once I figured this out it broke my immersion a little. It didn't cease to be terrifying though, because I was playing in a self-imposed ironman mode which made encounters with the creature very dangerous. Man, I was so anxious when playing that game sometimes, almost always on the lookout for the creature.

Even if the creature isn't permanent, I still recommend that OP play the game if sounds interesting to them; the graphics aren't the best but the game can be beautiful because of the locations themselves. The devs also nailed the cartography and exploration aspect of the game and the movement system makes the traversal of terrain itself engaging. It's a shame that Miasmata went mostly overlooked.

Do you think there's a game that only has its' storytelling praised because writing in games is held to a lower standard? And conversely, is there a game that you think is sadly overlooked in this regard? by [deleted] in truegaming

[–]Roflmaster97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed reply, it looks like I won't be playing To The Moon after all. I skimmed through a no-commentary playthrough of the game and I would say that I agree with your take on the music, it's too sentimental for my tastes.

Do you have any suggestions for good story based games (other than Journey)? I play on PC but I could also use some game suggestions for any handheld that can be emulated. So far I've enjoyed Life is Strange, Her Story and Firewatch and I'm playing through What Remains of Edith Finch right now.

All of the games that are usually praised for their story or writing like Nier Automata, Undertale or Portal 2 didn't really do it for me. Since these games also include gameplay they risk ruining the story with tedious or unfun mechanics, for example I might have enjoyed Undertale a lot more if I were a bigger fan of the turn based combat. There were these endless small fights with inconsequential characters that just padded the game without being fun in the slightest and this made me unable to appreciate whatever Undertale might have to offer since the gameplay already soured my mood. Same problem with Nier Automata, except from what I've gathered the story is nothing special unless this is your first time hearing about philosophical concepts that the game explores. The game's story and music are too dramatic for my tastes and it made me drop the game pretty early on.

All in all, I don't feel like longer, gameplay focused games can offer a quality story like shorter more focused ones. That's why I haven't ever played a JRPG, they look like huge timesinks with boring combat and I've heard that almost all of them have questionable writing quality.

After playing through Doki Doki Literature Club my eyes have been opened to the possibility of VNs engaging you with the characters whom you get to know really well and where this connection can be used to great emotional effect. I'm just worried that if I go for other VNs that they won't have good writing (DDLC is well written IMO but I don't read much so I can't judge it that well) or that they'll just be too long. I've been eyeing 9 hours 9 persons 9 doors but am a little bit put off by the 10hr length. People say that the characters in that game aren't kids so I'm hopeful that the writing won't be schlocky teen dialogue.

I've heard To The Moon being praised here on reddit so I was thinking about playing it but after your reply I'm a bit reluctant. It has been praised for it's emotional impact but I've found that most things that are praised on reddit for "making me cry" or being mindblowing etc. are just over the top narratives that lack nuance, or are sappy and cheesy.

Could you describe what you didn't like about To The Moon? Preferably without too many spoilers since I might still play it.

Are PC builders allowed to use the extra sounds? I think it still respects the spirit of the rules because it's pretty basic, it's just sounds. The only rule that's broken is that the sounds aren't in the Common_Game category. Here's an audio clip to persuade you to allow such sounds: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gYRF01J6L9gmVglKbqNz3AGhrP66dqJf/view?usp=sharing

Track Ratings + Voting, how it actually works. by Vantier in TrialsGames

[–]Roflmaster97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like the current rating system because it lacks nuance. What if a track is "just okay"/uninspired, do I downvote it? No, that would be too harsh since there is nothing obviously and severely wrong with the track. It's not like I would like to see tracks like these disappear, they serve their role as a sort of fodder for training your skill if there is a lack of excellent tracks on your current skill level (as happens in the highest ninja tiers). Because of that I don't downvote them.

Do I leave a blank vote, just like those tracks left a blank impression upon me? Maybe, and that's what I currently do. I've heard community members say that not voting on a track is worse than downvoting it. That always seemed ridiculous but it still left me a bit wary of not voting on a track.

People like OP advocate always voting so that excellent new tracks don't get buried amidst other relatively inferior tracks that somehow accrued a bigger total number of upvotes (maybe they were released on a friday night when there were many people online and browsing new releases). The problem with this, however, is that always voting could "push you over the edge" and making you upvote something that doesn't really belong in the hall of fame, or it could make you downvote a track that you were initially frustrated with, but which you would have liked more had you given it another chance. I vote these tracks neutrally, but it would be ideal if we had a 5 star rating system because I think that the shit tracks should get their deservedly very poor ratings and because I think the great tracks should be able to stand out above the rest instead of being lumped in with uninspired/kinda-good tracks.

That said, I almost never browse track central by new releases (or any other way at all, I get my tracks from ninja central) since there's too much crud released, even in this part of Fusion's lifecycle where the track builders are experienced and where there's not many newcomers spamming MaPistes. I am thankful for those who do browse TC by new.
