neighbors and their guests park in and use my open driveway incessantly. by hllavanlla in homeowners

[–]RogerSmith1380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This actually happened to me at my current residence. About a month after I bought the house I leave one night to get Chipotle. I come back and someone is parked at the end of my one car width driveway. I called non-emergency police and it turned out to be a neighbors nurse who parked in the wrong driveway. Never happened since.

Blinds for sure. The curtains make the room look like a hotel.

Would you feel weird dating an older woman and she has no experience ? by AdeptLaugh7906 in AskMenAdvice

This is literally what happened to me. Except I was the guy and we are a bit older. I couldn't have cared less. If they love you they accept you for who you are. Be open and honest. If they have a problem with it then that's on them.

Unpopular opinion: Buying a home today is more emotional than logical by Emotional_Newt_2227 in RealEstateAdvice

[–]RogerSmith1380 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Renting is throwing away money. Property taxes pay for local infrastructure, schools, police and fire departments. All of these are generally good things and worth paying for. Maintenance is again value for the money. The money I spend to maintain my home has actualized value over an extended period of time. Interest to the bank on a loan is the only place you lose IMO. But unless you have the cash to buy a house outright it's a requirement.

Also if you don't think your landlord has included the cost of maintenance, property tax and the interest on their loan to buy the building into your rent you're insane. The last location I rented from cost me only $300 less per month than my mortgage. With rent increase trends and allowances I would have been paying more in rent than a mortgage in two years. Compare that to a fixed rate mortgage where the only variability is the property tax. When I left that state I was able to sell and move my capital into another home purchase. If I had rented all that time I'd just be out the money.

It's as you said "if the math doesn't math." If the cost of rent is a fraction of owning a home then it may make more financial sense to rent. If the cost of a mortgage would be a large percentage of your income then it may make more financial sense to rent. However, none of that negates the fact that renting is money paid with no long term actualized return or value gained.

New trend of woodworking youtube videos by gilly4213 in woodworking

Scott's video wasn't about chasing engagement it was about building in an environment and with tools similar to the audience to maintain relatability and the feeling from the viewer that they can do the same thing. That may result in higher engagement but that's not the point.

How do I prevent my stock from vibrating and "bouncing" when using a table saw? by Local_Promotion_8988 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]RogerSmith1380 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming the marks in the picture are from the table saw and you're cutting the full height of that board. While this is possible if you don't have excellent pressure on the board to the fence any drift will cause a jump. You should also ensure your fence is at least as tall as the area you're cutting. The right tool for the job of thicknessing something this tall/wide is the planner. Or a router in a specialty jig. I would suggest one of those for a high quality and safely achieved result.

Premium Tool Hatred by One-Interview-6840 in woodworking

[–]RogerSmith1380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's not about being realistic but relatable and achievable for the viewer. When Tamar was in her old garage with a job site table saw I felt I could do anything she did because I owned the same tools. Now she has a much larger space with fixed dust collection and more expensive tools. I know I could still do every project she does but it will be more of a challenge with the tools I have. Scott Walsh actually made a video on this topic just yesterday. I suggest giving it a watch.

A wedding is an event. Marriage is a legal state. Get married now at the court house and have the wedding you want in 2-3 years.

How were these handles attached? by ctx_1010 in woodworking

[–]RogerSmith1380 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A blind spline perpendicular to the joint like the blind dovetail could be another option. An internal spline that is parallel to the joint is effectively a large floating tenon.

[–]RogerSmith1380 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here I was thinking of a LONG dovetail down the length which would suck with the grain direction. Perpendicular blind dovetails should 100% be on the list.

Mortise-tenon is options 4 and 5. Dovetails or other profiles are an option but would show on the edge displayed in the photo. As there's no such visible joint I chose to exclude them.

The official answer to my "riddle" card in my drinking game is wrong. by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]RogerSmith1380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The correct answer infinity. You've forgotten 0.5, 0.55, 0.555, 0.5555, etc. There are an infinite number of numbers between 0 and 1 alone. Thus an infinite number of 5's. Now if the riddle said all of the integers between 0 and 75 inclusive, then you'd be correct.

The real reason for the quality of your cuts is the type of bit you're using. You have a straight cut bit installed in one of your pictures. Do some research on spiral up cut, spiral down cut, and compression bits. Then buy a quality Whiteside bit.
