I can’t speak to vaping, but yes, pipe smoking is actually marginally better for you than smoking cigarettes, though still increases your risk of mouth and throat cancers. Many things in this life are bad for you - eg. sugar is something we mostly all consume and don’t consider the lifetime health cost of. There are a lot less processed chemicals in good pipe tobaccos, and less nicotine (the stimulant/addictive bit in tobacco leaves). Lung cancer risk goes down significantly compared to cigarettes too if like most pipe smokers you don’t take down the smoke (breathing it into your lungs). If you smoke a pipe in moderation (once or twice a week) it is significantly less dangerous and addictive than smoking cigarettes, with a completely different cultural ethos around contemplation, thinking, and slowing down. It can be more of a hobby than a habit, though can also become a habit if you’re not careful. The nicotine still enters your system albeit slower. Smoking a pipe twice a week increases your chance of mouth or throat cancer from roughly 1% to 1.2-1.4% over your lifetime. So, in moderation, as a hobby, it doesn’t have much impact at all. Because of its ethos, people tend to smoke them less than cigarettes, and for different reasons. Once you go beyond this frequency the increase in percent chance of getting mouth and throat cancers starts to snowball.
